Chapter 6: The Truth She Couldn't Say
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The silence after Emily’s call was heavier than any scream.
I looked at the little girl standing in front of me.
The same child who had run through the diner doors.
The same child who had grabbed my hands and begged for help.
The same child who had made me believe she was running from danger.
Now I didn’t know what to believe.
Daniel slowly walked closer.
“You understand now.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“Don’t pretend you’re the good guy.””
A small smile appeared on his face.
“I never said I was.””
That answer disturbed me more than a lie.
The little girl stepped forward.
She started signing.
Fast.
Desperate.
I watched her hands.
“She’s lying.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
She pointed at Daniel.
Then herself.
Then shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel laughed.
“She can’t even keep her story straight.””
The girl became frustrated.
She grabbed the notebook and flipped through pages.
Then she pointed at something.
A name.
A date.
I looked closer.
It was Emily’s handwriting.
The girl tapped the page.
Then pointed at herself.
I didn’t understand.
“What are you trying to tell me?””
She looked around the diner.
Then she pointed toward the security camera above the register.
My eyes narrowed.
The camera.
She had been trying to tell me something about the camera.
Rick suddenly spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
Rick walked toward the register.
“There’s a backup recording system.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“You don’t want to do that.””
Rick stopped.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
“What’s on the footage?””
Nobody answered.
Rick opened the cabinet beneath the counter.
Inside was a small monitor.
He turned it on.
The screen flickered.
The recording from earlier appeared.
The parking lot.
The blue car.
The little girl running toward the diner.
I watched silently.
Then I saw something.
A person near the car.
Not Daniel.
Not Rick.
Someone else.
My breath caught.
Emily.
She was standing beside the blue car.
Talking to the girl.
Then another figure appeared.
Daniel.
The video froze.
Rick looked at me.
“The system was damaged.””
“Convenient.””
He looked away.
But the girl was pointing at the screen.
She was shaking her head.
Not at Daniel.
At Emily.
I didn’t understand.
Then I noticed something.
The timestamp.
The footage was from thirty minutes earlier.
But Emily’s phone call had happened moments ago.
She was alive.
She was somewhere.
And she had lied about one thing.
The video continued.
Emily handed something to the little girl.
A small envelope.
The girl hid it inside her jacket.
Then Emily looked directly at the camera.
Like she knew someone was watching.
She raised her hands.
And signed.
Not to the girl.
To whoever would find the recording.
I leaned closer.
My heart stopped.
Because I understood the signs.
Emily was saying:
“Sarah.””
The footage ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then the front doors opened.
A police officer rushed inside.
“Everyone stay where you are!””
Relief hit me.
Finally.
But it lasted only a second.
Because the officer looked directly at Daniel.
And instead of reaching for his weapon…
he walked toward him.
Daniel smiled.
“About time.””
The officer nodded.
Then looked at me.
“Sarah Collins?””
I stepped back.
“Yes?””
The officer reached into his pocket.
And pulled out a photograph.
My blood ran cold when I saw it.
It was Emily.
Standing beside Daniel.
Smiling.
The officer’s voice was quiet.
“I’m sorry.””
He turned the photo around.
On the back was a handwritten message.
*Your sister wasn’t investigating him.*
A pause.
May you like
Then:
*She was working with him.*
