Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Protection

The darkness came faster than fear.

One second, Carter was standing across the room.

The next, he disappeared.

Not literally.

But the darkness changed everything.

Every shadow became a threat.

Every sound became a warning.

I grabbed the recorder from the table.

“Carter?””

No answer.

My phone light turned on.

The beam moved across the room.

The old walls.

The broken furniture.

The empty hallway.

Then I saw him.

Standing near the doorway.

Carter.

My heart slowed.

“You scared me.””

He didn’t smile.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Carter always looked serious.

But this was different.

This was cold.

“Who called you?”” he asked.

I frowned.

“What?””

“Who told you to come here?””

“My mother.””

His expression changed.

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

Carter looked away.

“That’s impossible.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped back.

“You know something.””

Carter sighed.

“I should have told you earlier.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“Told me what?””

He looked at the box.

“Your mother didn’t disappear.””

I froze.

“She died.””

“That’s what everyone was told.””

My hands went cold.

“Carter.””

He stepped closer.

“I’ve been protecting Emily for years.””

“From who?””

He looked directly at me.

“From your mother.””

The room went silent.

“No.””

“I know what it sounds like.””

“It sounds insane.””

“I agree.””

I shook my head.

“You’re lying.””

Carter reached into his coat.

I immediately stepped back.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a photograph.

Another one.

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

And my entire world cracked.

It was my mother.

Alive.

Standing beside Daniel.

And beside her…

was Emily.

But the date on the photo was impossible.

Because it was taken last year.

My hands trembled.

“No.””

Carter spoke quietly.

“Emily found out before you did.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did she pretend she didn’t know?””

“Because she was trying to protect you.””

“From my mother?””

“Yes.””

The house creaked.

A sound from upstairs.

We both looked toward the ceiling.

Someone was there.

Carter whispered:

“We’re not alone.””

I held the photograph tighter.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Because a voice came from the stairs.

A voice I recognized.

A voice I had spent years missing.

“Sarah.””

I turned slowly.

A woman stood at the top of the stairs.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

My mother.

Alive.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I couldn’t speak.

My entire body froze.

Carter raised his weapon.

My mother looked at him.

“You still think you’re protecting her.””

Carter’s jaw tightened.

“You destroyed her family.””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Your father did.””

I felt like I had been punched.

“What?””

She walked down the stairs slowly.

“Sarah, everything you know about that night is wrong.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She stopped a few feet away.

“Your father wasn’t killed because he discovered Daniel’s secret.””

A pause.

“He was killed because he was hiding his own.””

The house fell silent.

Then my mother looked at the box in my hands.

And whispered:

“You finally found the truth.””

She looked at Carter.

Then back at me.

“The truth your sister has been trying to bury.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from Emily.

One sentence.

*Don’t believe her.*

I looked at my mother.

Then at the message.

And realized the worst part.

May you like

For the first time in my life…

I didn’t know which person I was supposed to trust.
