Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Uniform
Sarah had faced enemies across deserts, mountains, and war zones.
She had walked into places where every person around her wanted her dead.
But nothing prepared her for the possibility that the greatest threat had been hidden inside her own memories.
She turned toward Michael Vale.
“What did you do?””
He didn’t answer.
That was worse.
Sarah stepped closer.
“I asked you a question.””
Vale looked at her.
“I protected you.””
Her expression hardened.
“That is not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
“No.””
Her voice remained controlled.
“But it’s not all of it.””
Vale looked down.
Reeves stepped forward.
“General Vale, explain.””
Vale remained silent.
Sarah noticed.
Michael Vale was never silent because he had nothing to say.
He was silent because he was deciding how much truth someone could survive.
And she hated that she still knew him so well.
“Start talking.””
Vale finally nodded.
“Years ago, before Echo Seven became an operation, it was an experiment.””
Collins frowned.
“Experiment?””
Vale looked at Sarah.
“A leadership program.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I was recruited for special operations.””
“You were selected.””
The difference hit her.
Selected.
Not recruited.
Vale continued.
“They weren’t looking for soldiers.””
He paused.
“They were looking for someone who could make impossible decisions under pressure.””
Sarah stared.
“And I was that person?””
“Yes.””
The room was silent.
Reeves looked disturbed.
“Who authorized this?””
Vale didn’t answer.
Sarah did.
“Someone higher than him.””
Vale looked at her.
“You always were too good at finding patterns.””
She ignored the comment.
“How much of my career was real?””
Vale’s expression changed.
“All of it.””
“Then what wasn’t?””
“The reasons behind certain assignments.””
The words felt heavier than anything else.
Sarah remembered.
The missions that never made sense.
The orders that arrived without explanation.
The operations where she was placed exactly where she was needed.
She had always assumed it was because she was capable.
Now she wondered if she had been placed there because she was being studied.
Collins looked at her.
“General…”
She raised a hand.
Not now.
She needed answers.
“Who is behind this?””
Vale looked toward the window.
“The same people who sent that message.””
“Names.””
“I don’t have all of them.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“You disappeared for twelve years and came back without answers?””
“I came back with proof.””
He pointed to the drive.
“Proof that someone inside the system has been manipulating operations for years.””
Reeves looked at the files.
“Why target Sarah now?””
Vale looked at him.
“Because she found the one thing they were afraid of.””
“What?””
Vale looked at Sarah.
“Her own file.””
Sarah frowned.
“My file?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it proves the project was never about creating a better commander.””
The station became silent.
Vale continued.
“It was about creating a commander who could not be controlled.””
Sarah felt a chill.
“And they failed?””
Vale looked at her.
“No.””
A pause.
“They succeeded.””
Nobody moved.
Then the station lights flickered.
A sound came from outside.
Engines.
Multiple vehicles.
Collins looked toward the window.
“We have company.””
Sarah moved toward the entrance.
Reeves stopped her.
“General.””
She looked back.
“What?””
“You don’t know who’s out there.””
Sarah checked her weapon.
“I know exactly who they are.””
“How?””
She looked at the screen.
At her own photograph.
At the words *SUBJECT ONE*.
“Because they’re not coming for the sheriff.””
A shadow moved outside the glass.
Sarah’s voice lowered.
“They’re coming for me.””
The front doors shook.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice came through the speaker system.
A voice Sarah had not heard in years.
A voice she thought belonged to the past.
“Sarah.””
She froze.
Everyone looked at her.
The voice continued.
“You always wanted to know who made you.””
A pause.
“And now you’re finally going to meet him.””
Sarah’s face went pale.
Because she knew that voice.
It wasn’t Michael Vale.
It wasn’t the man from the recording.
May you like
It belonged to the one person who had disappeared before Echo Seven ever began.
Her father.
