Chapter 11: The Betrayal Inside the Station

The first sound was glass breaking.

Not a gunshot.

Not an explosion.

Just the sharp sound of a window giving way.

Everyone moved at once.

Years of training took over.

Officers grabbed positions.

Federal agents secured the hallway.

Reeves directed his team with quick commands.

Sarah stood still for half a second.

Thinking.

The attack was too organized.

Too precise.

They weren’t trying to destroy the station.

They were trying to reach one person.

Her.

“Collins.””

The sheriff looked at her.

“Yes?””

“Move your people away from the center.””

He frowned.

“Why?””

“Because that’s where they expect us to defend.””

He understood.

“They know our layout.””

Sarah nodded.

“They’ve studied us.””

Vale moved beside her.

“Sarah.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“You need to know something.””

The timing irritated her.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

“Then make it quick.””

Vale looked at the surrounding officers.

“I helped create Echo Seven.””

The words stopped her.

“What?””

Reeves turned.

“General Vale?””

Vale continued.

“I wasn’t just the commander.””

Sarah stared.

“Then what were you?””

“The architect.””

The station seemed to go silent despite the chaos outside.

Sarah’s voice lowered.

“You built this.””

“I built the framework.””

“And my father?””

“He helped stop it.””

That changed everything.

Sarah looked toward the broken windows.

“So my father wasn’t the enemy.””

“No.””

Vale looked at her.

“He was trying to expose them.””

Sarah felt the pieces shifting.

All these years.

All the questions.

All the missing information.

Everything she believed was incomplete.

A door at the end of the hallway opened.

Everyone aimed their weapons.

But nobody entered.

Instead, a voice came from the darkness.

“Sarah.””

Her heart stopped.

Not because she recognized it.

Because she didn’t.

A man stepped forward.

Early sixties.

Calm.

Confident.

Wearing no uniform.

No badge.

No identification.

Just certainty.

Vale’s expression changed.

“You.””

Sarah looked at him.

“Who is he?””

Vale didn’t answer.

The man smiled.

“I was wondering when Michael would finally tell you.””

Sarah raised her weapon.

“Name.””

The man looked at her.

“Doctor Adrian Cross.””

Reeves immediately reacted.

“Impossible.””

Sarah noticed.

“You know him?””

Reeves looked disturbed.

“He was one of the original researchers.””

Sarah looked back.

“Researchers?””

Cross smiled.

“Your commander never told you everything.””

Sarah’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because he loved you like a daughter.””

The words angered her.

“Don’t talk about him like you know him.””

Cross didn’t react.

“You’re still doing exactly what we predicted.””

“What?””

“Protecting others before yourself.””

Sarah kept her weapon steady.

“And you’re still making mistakes.””

Cross smiled.

“Which one?””

“Thinking you understand me.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Sarah noticed.

Cross looked toward Vale.

“She really is different.””

Vale stepped forward.

“She was never yours.””

Cross laughed quietly.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

He looked at Sarah.

“She was never yours either.””

A tablet in Cross’s hand activated.

A file appeared.

Sarah’s file.

But this time, it was different.

There were pages she had never seen.

Medical reports.

Psychological evaluations.

Training records.

And one sentence repeated across multiple documents.

*ADAPTIVE COMMAND PROFILE SUCCESSFUL.*

Sarah felt something cold settle inside her.

“What did you do to me?””

Cross looked at her.

“We gave you an opportunity.””

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You took something from me.””

Cross shook his head.

“You still don’t understand.””

He stepped closer.

“We didn’t create your strength.””

A pause.

“We discovered it.””

Outside, more vehicles arrived.

Reeves looked toward the windows.

“We need to move.””

Sarah didn’t.

She stared at Cross.

“One question.””

He smiled.

“Ask.””

“Why now?””

Cross looked directly at her.

“Because the world is about to enter a crisis only you can stop.””

Sarah lowered her weapon slightly.

Not in surrender.

In thought.

“And if I refuse?””

Cross smiled.

“Then we activate the person you were trained to become.””

A silence followed.

Sarah felt every person in the room looking at her.

Waiting.

Then Michael Vale spoke quietly.

“Sarah.””

She looked at him.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Cross smiled.

“Too late.””

The lights flickered.

Every computer screen turned on.

A message appeared.

Not from Cross.

Not from Vale.

From Sarah’s own system.
