Chapter 9: The Son Nobody Knew About

Ray stared at the birth certificate.

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

The name on the paper looked impossible.

Noah Carter wasn’t listed as Michael Carter’s son.

The original document showed another name.

*Daniel Vale.*

Richard Vale.

The same man who had just stood in front of Noah’s house.

The same man who had been paying Sarah.

The same man who had spent years keeping Michael away.

Ray felt the world shift.

He folded the paper carefully.

He couldn’t let Noah see this yet.

Not until he knew the truth.

He called Michael.

Michael answered immediately.

“What happened?””

“Can you meet me?””

A pause.

“Is it Noah?””

“No.””

Ray looked at the document.

“It’s about his birth certificate.””

The silence on the other end lasted too long.

“Michael?””

Finally, Michael spoke.

“Where did you get that?””

Ray froze.

“You know about it?””

Michael’s voice became quiet.

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

“I’ll tell you everything.””

They met at the same park where Michael and Noah had spoken the day before.

Michael looked older when he arrived.

Like he had been carrying a secret for years.

“You found out.””

Ray held up the document.

“Richard Vale is listed as Noah’s biological father.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because it wasn’t my secret to tell.””

Ray stepped closer.

“Michael, a child spent nine years thinking his father didn’t love him.””

Michael looked away.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Michael’s voice cracked.

“Because I promised Noah I would never make him choose between people he loved.””

Ray stared at him.

Michael continued.

“When Sarah was pregnant, she told me there was a chance Noah wasn’t mine.””

Ray said nothing.

“I wanted a test.””

“Did you get one?””

“Yes.””

Michael looked up.

“It showed I was Noah’s father.””

Ray frowned.

“Then why is Richard on the certificate?””

Michael shook his head.

“Because Sarah’s father controlled everything.””

“Richard knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he still let you raise him?””

Michael’s eyes filled.

“He didn’t care about Noah.””

A long silence followed.

“He cared about owning everything.””

Ray looked at the document.

“So Richard is trying to claim him now?””

Michael nodded.

“He always said Noah was his blood.””

Ray clenched his fist.

“He waited nine years.””

“He was waiting for the right moment.””

“Why now?””

Michael looked toward the playground.

“Because Noah finally became visible.””

Ray understood.

The motorcycles.

The attention.

The community.

Noah was no longer invisible.

And Richard couldn’t control a child who had an entire army of people standing beside him.

That evening, Ray went to Noah’s house.

The boy was sitting on the porch.

“Hey.””

Noah smiled.

“Dad came by earlier.””

Ray sat down.

“How did it go?””

Noah looked happy.

“He brought me a book.””

Ray smiled.

“That’s good.””

Noah looked at him.

“Are you okay?””

Ray almost laughed.

A nine-year-old asking if he was okay.

“No.””

Noah frowned.

“Why?””

“Because sometimes adults make things more complicated than they should be.””

Noah looked down.

“Is something wrong with me?””

Ray immediately turned.

“No.””

“Then why does everyone fight?””

Ray took a breath.

“Because sometimes people fight over things they think they own.””

Noah looked confused.

“Like what?””

Ray looked at the boy.

“Like love.””

Before Noah could answer, a car stopped outside.

This time, it wasn’t Richard.

It was Sarah.

She stepped out holding a folder.

Her face was pale.

She walked straight toward Ray.

“We need to talk.””

Ray stood.

“About what?””

Sarah looked at Noah.

Then whispered:

“About the truth.””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a DNA test.

Sarah’s hands trembled.

“I never told Richard this.””

Ray looked at the paper.

“What is it?””

Sarah swallowed.

“The test results.””

Ray read the first line.

Then his eyes widened.

Because the results didn’t prove Richard was Noah’s father.

They proved something else.

Something that could destroy everything Richard had built.

Sarah whispered:

“Noah was never supposed to find out…”

May you like

And behind her, Noah was standing in the doorway.

Listening.
