Chapter 7: The Name on the Bank Records

Ray sat in his truck outside the park long after Noah and Michael had left.

The sun was disappearing behind the trees, painting the windshield orange.

But Ray barely noticed.

His mind kept returning to one thing.

*Payments.*

Someone had been paying to keep Michael away from Noah.

And whoever it was had been careful.

Very careful.

Ray called Cole back.

“Tell me exactly what you found.””

Cole answered immediately.

“We started with the documents Michael gave you. Then we checked the old financial records connected to Sarah.””

“And?””

“There were monthly transfers.””

“How much?””

“Different amounts. Nothing huge. Enough to avoid attention.””

Ray tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

“Where did the money come from?””

Cole hesitated.

“That’s the part you’re not going to like.””

Ray looked at the empty road ahead.

“Try me.””

“The payments came from a company called Carter Family Holdings.””

Ray frowned.

“That’s Michael’s last name.””

“Exactly.””

Silence.

Ray felt something cold move through his chest.

“Are you saying Michael was paying himself?””

“No.””

Cole paused.

“The company wasn’t owned by Michael.””

Ray sat up.

“Then who owned it?””

Another pause.

Then Cole answered.

“Sarah’s father.””

Ray closed his eyes.

The pieces started moving.

“Her father was paying her?””

“Looks like it.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know yet.””

Ray looked toward the park.

Noah had spent years believing his father abandoned him.

But what if the truth was worse?

What if someone had built an entire story around that lie?

Ray started the engine.

“I need to talk to Michael.””

Michael was sitting at his kitchen table when Ray arrived.

The house was small.

Clean.

Quiet.

The kind of place where someone lived alone because they had learned not to expect anyone to come home.

Michael looked up.

“You found something.””

Ray placed his phone on the table.

“Your former father-in-law.””

Michael’s face changed.

“What about him?””

“He was sending money to Sarah.””

Michael stood.

“What?””

“Monthly payments.””

Michael stared at him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Michael walked away from the table.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“You know him better than I do.””

Michael ran a hand through his hair.

“He hated me.””

“Why?””

Michael looked back.

“Because he thought I wasn’t good enough for his daughter.””

Ray studied him.

“Did he ever threaten you?””

Michael became quiet.

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“He said people like me didn’t belong in their family.””

Ray nodded slowly.

“People like you?””

Michael gave a bitter laugh.

“He was wealthy. Powerful. He believed everyone had a place.””

“And yours wasn’t beside his daughter?””

“Exactly.””

Ray looked at the documents again.

“Why would he pay Sarah to keep you away from Noah?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Ray saw it.

“You have an idea.””

Michael swallowed.

“I just don’t want it to be true.””

“What?””

Michael sat down.

“My father-in-law never cared about Sarah being happy.””

He looked toward the hallway.

“He cared about control.””

The word stayed in the room.

Control.

Michael continued.

“When Sarah was pregnant with Noah, her father offered me money.””

“For what?””

“To leave.””

Ray’s expression hardened.

“What did you say?””

“I refused.””

Michael smiled sadly.

“I thought love would be enough.””

“And then?””

“Then suddenly, Sarah started changing.””

Ray leaned closer.

“You think her father manipulated her?””

“I think he knew exactly how to get what he wanted.””

Before Ray could respond, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“You’re asking questions that don’t belong to you.””

Ray stood.

“Who is this?””

The voice ignored him.

“Stay away from Noah Carter.””

Ray’s eyes narrowed.

“Or what?””

A quiet laugh.

“You think those bikers make you powerful?””

Ray looked toward Michael.

The man continued.

“You’re just another person who doesn’t understand the situation.””

The call ended.

Ray stared at the phone.

Michael’s face had gone pale.

“You know who that was?””

Michael nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Michael whispered the name.

And Ray immediately understood why Michael had been afraid.

Because the person controlling Noah’s life wasn’t just rich.

He had influence.

Power.

Connections.

And now he knew Ray was involved.
