Chapter 5: The House at the End of the Road
Daniel told me not to go.
He said it three times, each more firmly than the last.
“The message is a threat, Michael. We don't know who sent it. We don't know whether Vanessa has Lily willingly or whether someone else is involved. Let the authorities handle this.””
I stood beside my truck outside the school, staring at the photograph of my daughter.
“Look at her face.””
“I see it.””
“She is terrified.””
“And I'm telling you that walking into an unknown location alone could make this worse.””
I dragged a hand through my hair.
“What if they move her before anyone gets there?””
Daniel called the police again and forwarded the messages. He also contacted the court to report the apparent violation of the temporary custody order.
I gave the dispatcher the address from the text.
The officer who spoke with me said units were being assigned, but he couldn't guarantee how quickly they would arrive.
I wanted to wait.
I really did.
But every second felt like another second Lily spent believing her father wasn't coming.
I drove toward the address, keeping Daniel on the phone and telling him my location. I didn't approach the property. Instead, I stopped at a gas station several blocks away and waited for the police to arrive.
The address belonged to a small house on the outskirts of Columbus, near an industrial road lined with warehouses and empty lots.
A silver sedan sat in the driveway.
I recognized it immediately.
Vanessa's car.
Two police vehicles pulled into the gas station parking lot several minutes later. An officer named Harris spoke with me, examined the threatening messages, and confirmed that the address was being assessed.
“Stay here until we establish what's happening,” he instructed.
I nodded.
Then I saw movement across the road.
A man in a dark jacket stepped out of a convenience store and looked directly at my truck.
He was tall, perhaps in his early forties, with close-cropped hair and a pale scar near his left eyebrow.
He stared at me for several seconds.
Then he walked toward the silver sedan parked beside the house.
I pointed.
“That's him.””
Officer Harris followed my gaze.
“You recognize him?””
“No. But I think he might be involved.””
The man opened the sedan's driver's door, looked toward the house, and immediately shut it again.
Then he started walking away.
Officer Harris called to him.
“Sir! Police. We need to speak with you.””
The man broke into a run.
Two officers pursued him around the side of the building while another moved toward the house.
I remained beside the truck, barely breathing.
Then I heard a child's scream.
“Daddy!””
I recognized Lily's voice instantly.
I ran toward the house before Officer Harris could stop me.
“Sir, stay back!””
But Lily was screaming again.
“DADDY!””
The front door opened.
Vanessa appeared, clutching Lily by the shoulders.
“Michael, don't come any closer!””
Lily struggled against her.
“Daddy, please!””
Officer Harris moved between us.
“Ma'am, release the child and step away from the door.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't understand! These people are trying to take her!””
“Who are these people?”” the officer demanded.
Vanessa looked past him at me.
“You shouldn't have come here.””
“I came because someone threatened my daughter!””
“I was trying to protect her!””
“By taking her in violation of the court order?””
Her face crumpled.
For a moment, she looked like the woman I'd married eight years earlier, the woman who used to fall asleep on the couch with Lily tucked against her chest.
Then she tightened her grip on our daughter.
“You don't know what he's capable of,” she whispered.
Officer Harris stepped closer.
“Ma'am, I need you to let go of the child now.””
Vanessa finally released Lily.
My daughter bolted toward me.
I dropped to my knees and caught her in my arms. She clung to my neck, sobbing so hard she could barely speak.
“I thought you weren't coming.””
I held her tightly.
“I will always try to come for you, sweetheart. Always.””
She buried her face against my shoulder.
“I'm sorry.””
“For what?””
“I told him where the card was.””
I froze.
“What card?””
“The hospital card. The one I gave you.””
I pulled back enough to see her face.
“Who did you tell?””
Lily glanced over my shoulder.
“The man in the house.””
Officer Harris guided Vanessa away from the doorway while another officer entered the property.
“Is anyone else inside?”” he asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
Then she looked at Lily.
“Tell them what happened, baby.””
Lily recoiled.
“Don't call me that.””
The words landed like a slap.
Vanessa began crying.
“Lily, please. I'm your mother.””
“You said Daddy would go away if I told.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Officer Harris turned to her.
“Who threatened your daughter?””
She looked toward the road, where the other officers had disappeared.
“The man who was here.””
“What's his name?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she whispered, “Derek.””
The officer wrote it down.
“Derek what?””
“I don't know his last name.””
“Why was he here?””
Vanessa stared at me.
“Because he knows about Noah.””
My daughter tightened her grip around my arm.
Officer Harris asked another officer to remain with Vanessa while he spoke with us.
I carried Lily to the patrol vehicle and wrapped a blanket around her shoulders. A paramedic checked her for injuries. She had no obvious serious injuries, but she was exhausted and frightened.
When the paramedic finished, I sat beside her on the curb.
“Sweetheart, did that man hurt you?””
She shook her head.
“Did he threaten you?””
Another nod.
“What did he say?””
Lily rubbed her eyes.
“He said if I told you where Noah went, he'd make Mommy disappear.””
I felt sick.
“Did Mommy believe him?””
Lily looked toward Vanessa, who was speaking with an officer.
“She said we had to do what he wanted.””
I swallowed hard.
“Why?””
“Because he knows where Noah is.””
Across the driveway, Vanessa suddenly raised her voice.
“I'm not going to prison for something he did!””
Officer Harris immediately approached her.
“Ma'am, what are you referring to?””
Vanessa stopped talking.
I watched her carefully.
“Vanessa,” I called.
“What did Derek do?””
She looked at me with desperate eyes.
“He didn't just take Noah.””
The officers went silent.
Vanessa pressed both hands against her forehead.
“He made me sign the papers. He said if I didn't cooperate, he'd tell everyone what happened at the hospital.””
“What happened at the hospital?”” I demanded.
She shook her head.
“I can't.””
“Your daughter has been threatened. I have been threatened. You took Lily against a court order. Whatever you're hiding, it's already hurting people.””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then she whispered, “I didn't know they were going to transfer him.””
My heart stopped.
“Transfer him where?””
“Another hospital. That's what Derek told me.””
“Why would he have any say in that?””
“Because he said he could help me.””
“Help you with what?””
Vanessa looked away.
Officer Harris stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, we need you to explain your relationship with Derek and what happened to the infant.””
She began to cry harder.
“He told me Noah would be safe. He said I could see him whenever I wanted.””
“And did you?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“Because after the transfer, Derek stopped answering my calls.””
I stared at her.
“You let a stranger take our son, and then you did nothing?””
Her head snapped up.
“I didn't know what else to do!””
“You could have called me!””
“You would have taken him from me!””
The words echoed across the driveway.
For a moment, all I could hear was the wind rattling the loose metal sign on the building next door.
Then Vanessa said something that made every officer turn toward her.
“Derek isn't the baby's father,” she whispered.
“But he knows who is.””
I looked at her.
“What are you talking about?””
She began shaking her head.
“I can't explain it here.””
Officer Harris stepped closer.
“Then you'll explain it at the station.””
Vanessa didn't resist when he escorted her toward the patrol car.
As the officers prepared to leave, Lily tugged on my sleeve.
“Daddy?””
I knelt beside her.
“I'm listening.””
She looked at the house, then at the road.
“Derek said the baby wasn't supposed to have your name.””
My mouth went dry.
“Why?””
Lily reached into the small pocket of her backpack and pulled out a folded photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing beside a hospital bassinet, holding a newborn.
Behind her stood Derek.
But Derek wasn't looking at the baby.
He was looking directly at the camera.

And beneath the photograph, in Vanessa's handwriting, were four words.
*The wrong father was listed.*
