Chapter 9: The DNA Test That Changed Everything
I couldn't stop looking at the document.
Derek Shaw.
The man who had threatened my daughter.
The man who had allegedly altered the hospital paperwork.
The man whose mother had taken custody of Noah.
According to the document, he was also the child's biological father.
But a name on a form wasn't proof.
I had learned that the hard way.
Detective Mitchell examined the document while the other officers spoke with Evelyn Shaw.
“Mrs. Shaw, we need to establish how this document was created and whether it reflects a verified paternity determination.””
Evelyn wiped her eyes.
“I didn't create it. Derek gave it to me.””
“When?””
“After Noah was transferred to the private facility.””
“Did you see a DNA test?””
“No.””
“Did anyone explain the legal basis for the guardianship?””
She shook her head.
“Derek said Vanessa had signed everything and that the child needed a stable home.””
I stepped forward.
“You knew Vanessa was married to me.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she had hidden the baby from me.””
Evelyn looked down.
“I knew you weren't supposed to be involved.””
“Why?””
“Because Derek told us you weren't the father.””
“But you never checked?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I believed my son.””
I let out a bitter laugh.
“And my daughter has spent months being threatened because your son didn't want me to find out.””
Evelyn flinched.
“I didn't know about the threats.””
“Did you know he had used my name?””
She hesitated.
“I saw the paperwork. I didn't understand all of it.””
Detective Mitchell stepped between us before my anger could get the better of me.
“Mr. Carter, please.””
I backed away, breathing hard.
Evelyn led the officers into the house, where they began documenting the relevant records and checking whether any recent information identified Noah's location.
I waited outside with Daniel.
“Can they take him?”” I asked.
“If they establish that the placement is unlawful or that he's in danger, the authorities can take appropriate action. But we need to let them determine the legal position.””
“What if Derek has already moved him?””
“Then the investigation will follow the evidence.””
I looked at the quiet house.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it's true.””
Daniel rested a hand on my shoulder.
“We're closer than we were yesterday. We know Noah existed, we have a transfer trail, and we have a person who can explain how the child was placed with Derek's family. That matters.””
I wanted to believe him.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I stared at the screen before answering.
“What?””
“Michael, please don't listen to Evelyn.””
“Your signature is on the guardianship papers.””
“I know.””
“You knew Derek claimed to be Noah's father.””
“I knew he said he was.””
“And you let him take our son?””
Her breathing became ragged.
“I thought I was protecting him.””
“From what?””
“From the truth.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I was pregnant before we separated. I found out after you moved into your apartment, and I was terrified.””
“Terrified of what?””
“That you would fight me for custody. That you would tell everyone I had ruined our family. That Lily would hate me.””
“So you hid the pregnancy?””
“Yes.””
“And Derek?””
“He was helping me.””
“Helping you do what?””
She went silent.
“Vanessa!””
“I met him through a friend. He said he knew people who could help with the medical expenses. When Noah was born, he told me there was a way to arrange temporary care until I could get my life together.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why was his name on the original paternity paperwork?””
“Because he told me he was the father.””
“Was he?””
“I don't know.””
The answer stopped me cold.
“What do you mean, you don't know?””
“I was with Derek before our marriage ended. I thought Noah was yours. Then I realized the dates might not fit.””
My stomach turned.
“You had an affair?””
Vanessa sobbed.
“Yes.””
I looked away from the house.
For months, I had wondered whether my marriage had ended because I hadn't been enough. Now I was learning that Vanessa had concealed an affair, a pregnancy, and a child whose paternity was uncertain.
But none of that explained the threats.
“Why did Derek take Noah?””
“He said he wanted to raise him. He said he could give him things I couldn't.””
“And you agreed?””
“I signed temporary guardianship papers. I didn't understand that he could move Noah again without telling me.””
“Why didn't you call the police?””
“Because he had copies of the messages between us. He threatened to show them to Lily when she was older. He said he'd tell her I abandoned her brother.””
I stared at the phone.
“You let him threaten our daughter into silence.””
“I know.””
“You made her practice lies for court.””
“I was afraid you'd take Lily away from me.””
I felt something inside me go quiet.
“Vanessa, you don't get to use fear as an excuse for everything.””
She cried harder.
“I know.””
I ended the call.
Daniel stood beside me, having heard enough to understand.
“Did she confirm the affair?””
“Yes.””
“Did she confirm that paternity is uncertain?””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“Then we need to establish the facts scientifically and legally.””
That afternoon, the investigators obtained additional records and arranged for the relevant parties to cooperate with a formal paternity investigation. I provided a DNA sample through the appropriate process.
Vanessa's sample and the available records were also requested, subject to the necessary consent and legal authorization.
I was told the results would take several days.
Those days were the longest of my life.
Lily asked about Noah every morning.
I told her the truth: we had found records showing where he had been, but we still needed to locate him and establish what happened.
She listened without interrupting.
On the third evening, she climbed onto the couch beside me and rested her head against my arm.
“Daddy?””
“Yeah, sweetheart?””
“If Noah isn't your baby, will you still look for him?””
I turned toward her.
“Of course.””
“Even if he's Derek's?””
I took her hands.
“Lily, a baby doesn't deserve to be abandoned because adults have made mistakes. Whether Noah is my biological son or not, he's your little brother. And if he needs help, we will do what we can.””
She nodded, then hugged me.
“I want him to have someone who loves him.””
I kissed the top of her head.
“So do I.””
The following morning, Daniel called me into his office.
He was standing beside the window, holding a sealed envelope.
“The preliminary paternity results have arrived,” he said.
I couldn't speak.
He placed the envelope on the desk.
“Before you open it, I need you to understand that this result answers one question. It doesn't explain why the records were altered or where Noah is now.””
I nodded.
My fingers trembled as I opened the envelope.
The report contained several pages of technical information, but the conclusion was unmistakable.
*Michael Carter is excluded as the biological father of the child tested.*
I read the sentence again.
Then I sat down.
For months, I had imagined finding Noah and bringing him home. I had imagined Lily holding her little brother, the two of them growing up together, and the three of us rebuilding a family after everything Vanessa had done.
Now the report had torn that future apart.
Daniel sat across from me.
“Michael, I'm sorry.””
I stared at the page.
“Does this prove Derek is the father?””
“No. It excludes you. It doesn't establish Derek's paternity.””
I rubbed my eyes.
“Then we need his DNA.””
“That's what the investigators are pursuing.””
I stood and walked to the window.
For the first time since the courthouse, I felt completely powerless.
Noah might not be my son by blood.
But he was still the baby Lily had visited in the hospital. He was still the child Vanessa had hidden. He was still the little boy someone had moved from one place to another while adults argued over names and signatures.
I turned back to Daniel.
“I want to know where he is.””
“We're working on it.””
My phone rang.
Detective Mitchell.
“We have a development,” she said.
“Derek Shaw has contacted his attorney. He's willing to speak with investigators.””
“Does he know about the DNA results?””
“Yes.””
“Does he admit he's Noah's father?””
“He claims he is.””
I gripped the desk.
“Then where is my son?””
Detective Mitchell paused.
“That's the problem. Derek says he no longer has custody of the child.””
My heart began racing.
“Who does?””
“He claims Noah was legally adopted several weeks ago.””
The room went silent.
“Adopted by whom?””
“We're verifying the paperwork.””
I closed my eyes.
“Detective, please tell me this is something we can still fix.””
“We don't know the legal status yet. But we're investigating the transfer and the adoption records.””
Then she added one final detail.
“Derek has also made an allegation against Vanessa. He says she knew the adoption was permanent and signed the consent herself.””
I stared at the paternity report on the desk.
Vanessa had hidden the pregnancy.
She had allowed Derek to claim paternity.
She had signed documents that sent Noah away.
And now Derek was claiming that she had willingly surrendered her son forever.
I thought I had reached the bottom of the truth.
Then Detective Mitchell said, “There's one more thing. The adoptive parents have been contacted, and they've agreed to cooperate.””
I held my breath.
“Who are they?””
She gave me the name.
And suddenly, the entire investigation took a turn I never could have imagined.
May you like
Because the people who had adopted Noah weren't strangers.
They were people I knew.
