Chapter 6

Ryan looked at me.
I looked at Carol.
She wanted exactly this.
Suspicion.
Confusion.
A crack she could force open.
“What am I hiding?” I asked.
Carol laughed.
“You know.”
“No. I don’t.”
“Emily.”
Ryan’s voice was quiet.
“What is she talking about?”
“I have no idea.”
Carol leaned closer to the door.
“Ask her about the money.”
My stomach tightened.
Not because I had stolen anything.
Because I suddenly understood.
The college account.
Six months earlier, I had moved fifteen thousand dollars from a joint savings account into a separate education account for Caleb.
Ryan knew we had opened the account.
What he didn’t know was why I had moved the money so quickly.
Because Carol had asked to borrow it.
She had cornered me at a family dinner and told me Ryan had already agreed.
I called Ryan afterward.
He hadn’t.
I never told him.
I simply moved the money where she couldn’t reach it and told Carol we didn’t have extra cash.
At the time, I thought I was preventing another fight.
Now I understood how stupid silence could become.
“I moved money into Caleb’s college account.”
Ryan frowned.
“I know that.”
“She asked me to lend it to her.”
Ryan’s eyes snapped toward Carol.
“What?”
Carol shouted through the door.
“That is a lie!”
“No, it isn’t.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ryan asked.
“Because she said you had already agreed. When I realized she was lying, I wanted to avoid a family blowup.”
His expression hurt.
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
Carol smiled triumphantly.
“There it is.”
I looked at her.
“That’s your secret?”
She faltered.
“You moved money behind his back.”
“Into our son’s education account.”
“Because you control everything.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
I touched his arm.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
He nodded once.
Then he looked at his mother.
“But Emily keeping our money away from you has nothing to do with what you did to Caleb.”
Carol’s face hardened again.
“You always were weak around women.”
Megan stepped forward.
“Mom, stop.”
Carol turned on her.
“You dragged me here!”
“I brought you because you said you wanted to apologize.”
“I do not apologize for disciplining my grandson.”
Megan went still.
I watched the realization hit her.
“You told me you barely touched him.”
“I shouldn’t have touched him at all. Happy?”
“No.”
Megan looked through the doorway at Ryan.
“Can I see the video?”
Carol grabbed her arm.
“No.”
Megan pulled away.
“Why?”
“Because it’s edited.”
“It’s security footage.”
“She manipulated it.”
I nearly laughed.
“How exactly did I manipulate a camera recording before I even knew I needed it?”
Carol ignored me.
Megan looked at Ryan.
“Send it.”
He hesitated.
Not because he wanted to protect Carol.
Because he knew once Megan watched it, whatever remained of their family would change forever.
Then he sent the clip.
Megan’s phone buzzed.
Carol reached for it.
Megan stepped away.
“Don’t.”
She pressed play.
I watched her face.
First confusion.
Then disbelief.
Then horror.
The video ended.
Megan looked at her mother.
“You hit him three times.”
“He deserved—”
Megan recoiled.
“You said you tapped him once.”
“He was screaming.”
“He was apologizing.”
“He had been impossible all afternoon!”
“He’s six.”
Carol’s voice sharpened.
“So was Ryan when he learned respect.”
Megan stared at her.
The porch went silent.
Mark closed his eyes.
Ryan gripped the doorframe.
I heard the distant sound of a police siren.
Carol seemed to realize what she had said.
Too late.
Megan whispered, “What did you do to Ryan?”
Carol rolled her eyes.
“Oh, please. Your brother was dramatic.”
Ryan’s voice came out flat.
“She locked me in the pantry.”
Megan looked at him.
“What?”
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
Ryan laughed without humor.
“Of course you didn’t.”
Megan looked at Mark.
“Dad?”
Mark nodded.
“I should have protected him.”
Megan stepped backward.
Her face had changed completely.
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Then she whispered something I didn’t expect.
“She used to make me kneel on rice.”
Ryan stared.
“What?”
Megan looked embarrassed.
“Sometimes. When I talked back.”
Mark’s face went white.
“I didn’t know that.”
Carol snapped, “Because it was discipline.”
Megan’s eyes filled.
“You told me Dad ordered it.”
Mark looked horrified.
“I never did.”
Carol waved her hand.
“This family has gone insane.”
Police vehicles stopped at the curb.
Carol immediately transformed again.
Her shoulders dropped.
Her eyes filled with tears.
She looked fragile.
I had seen the performance too many times now.
So had Ryan.
One officer walked toward the porch.
Carol spoke before he reached us.
“My daughter-in-law is trying to keep me from my grandson.”
The officer looked at me.
I showed him the report number from the night before.
His expression became serious.
“Ma’am, you were advised not to return here while the investigation was ongoing.”
Carol pointed at Megan.
“She drove me.”
Megan stepped away from her.
“She asked me to bring her.”
Carol glared at her daughter.
The officer told Carol she needed to leave.
This time Megan did not get into the car with her.
Carol stared at all of us.
At Mark.
At Ryan.
At Megan.
Finally at me.
“You think she won.”
Nobody answered.
Carol’s mouth twisted.
“When this family collapses, it will be because of her.”
Ryan closed the door.
Not violently.
Not dramatically.
He simply shut it.
Then he locked it.
Megan stood inside our entryway looking lost.
For several seconds she said nothing.
Finally she looked at me.
“I’m sorry I accused you.”
I nodded.
“Thank you.”
Ryan leaned against the wall.
Megan turned to him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Ryan shrugged.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Her eyes filled again.
Because that was how families like this survived.
Everyone suffered separately.
Everyone believed they were the only one.
Mark sat down.
“I let this happen.”
Ryan looked at him.
“Yes.”
There was no softness in his answer.
Mark accepted it.
Megan wiped her face.
“I need to ask Caleb something.”
My entire body stiffened.
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“I just want—”
“No one questions him.”
“I wasn’t going to pressure him.”
“He has repeated enough.”
Megan nodded immediately.
“You’re right.”
That mattered.
Before she left, she hugged Ryan.
Then she hesitated in front of me.
I didn’t move.
Neither did she.
Finally she said, “I believe you.”
I looked at her.
“Believe Caleb.”
She nodded.
“I believe Caleb.”
After everyone left, Ryan and I sat in the kitchen.
The floor had been cleaned.
The juice was gone.
But I could still see the scene.
Ryan took my hand.
“You should have told me about Mom asking for money.”
“I know.”
“Was there anything else?”
“No.”
He searched my face.
I let him.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
His expression changed.
“Yes, this is Ryan Carter.”
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“We understand.”
Another pause.
“When?”
His face went pale.
After he hung up, I asked what happened.
Ryan swallowed.
“That was the investigator.”
My hand tightened around his.
“They reviewed the videos.”
“And?”
“They want to interview Caleb again tomorrow with a child specialist.”
I nodded slowly.
May you like
Then Ryan said the part that made my stomach drop.
“They also said Mom has filed a formal complaint claiming you coached him to make the allegations.”
