Chapter 1

The second I walked through the front door, I saw my mother-in-law hitting my six-year-old son across the face with her slipper. She didn’t even stop when he screamed my name.

I had left work early that Tuesday afternoon in Houston.

My husband, Ryan, was still at his office.

His mother, Carol, had agreed to watch my son, Caleb, for two hours.

The moment I opened the door, I heard crying from the kitchen.

Then I heard Carol shout, “Look what you did!”

I dropped my purse and ran.

Orange juice was spilled across the tile.

Caleb stood against the counter with tears covering his face.

Carol was in front of him holding one of her slippers.

“I’m sorry, Grandma,” Caleb sobbed.

She slapped the slipper against his cheek.

Once.

Then again.

And again.

“Carol!”

She turned around, but I was already running toward her.

I grabbed her wrist and shoved the slipper away.

Caleb threw himself against me.

“Mommy, I didn’t mean to spill it.”

I looked at the red marks on his face.

My hands started shaking.

“He’s six years old!”

Carol ripped her arm from my grip.

“He needs discipline because you refuse to give him any.”

Then she reached for Caleb again.

I stepped between them.

“Touch my son one more time.”

Carol shoved me first.

I shoved her back.

She grabbed my hair, and within seconds we were struggling across the kitchen while Caleb screamed for us to stop.

Then the front door opened.

“WHAT IS GOING ON?”

Ryan stood there staring at us.

Carol immediately let go of me and collapsed into a chair.

“She attacked me,” she cried.

I pointed at Caleb.

“Look at your son’s face.”

Ryan turned toward him.

But Carol suddenly said, “Before you believe her, ask your wife why Caleb has been lying to this family for months.”

The room went silent.

Caleb stopped crying.

Then he looked at his father and whispered, “Dad… Grandma told me never to tell you what she does when you’re gone.”
