Chapter 3: My Son's Midnight Secret
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The boutique's air-conditioning hummed overhead. Somewhere near the entrance, a customer quietly set down a shopping bag.
Everything else seemed to disappear.
My wife had owned a collection of diamonds that had once belonged to her grandmother. There were nine stones in total, each mounted in a different piece of jewelry. Catherine had inherited them shortly before we married, and she wore them only on special occasions.
She used to call them her grandmother's stars.
After she died, I placed the collection in a secure family vault and told Daniel that one day, when he had children of his own, he could decide what should happen to them.
Three years ago, I opened the vault to show him the collection.
Every piece was accounted for.
At least, I thought they were.
I looked at Richard.
“What does my wife's jewelry have to do with the ownership papers?””
He swallowed.
“Perhaps we should continue this discussion somewhere private.””
“No. Answer me.””
“Mr. Bennett, I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
Richard glanced toward Vanessa.
She shook her head almost imperceptibly.
I saw it.
So did Jasmine.
“Sir,” Jasmine said, “there's another recording.””
Vanessa's composure finally broke.
“Give me that phone!””
She reached across the counter, but Jasmine pulled it against her chest.
“Don't touch me!””
Vanessa stopped, breathing hard.
I turned toward the customers still standing nearby.
“I'm sorry you've had to witness this. If you'd prefer to leave, our staff will arrange whatever you need.””
Neither customer moved.
The woman who had laughed earlier looked at me with embarrassment.
“I apologize,” she murmured.
I nodded without answering.
My attention returned to Jasmine.
“Play the recording.””
She opened another file, this one an audio recording dated four days earlier.
Richard's voice came through the small speaker.
“The paperwork needs to be signed by Friday. After that, the transfer will be complete.””
Vanessa asked, “And if Marcus refuses?””
“He won't. Daniel has already convinced him the restructuring is necessary.””
A pause followed.
Then Vanessa asked the question that made my stomach tighten.
“What happens to the original stones?””
Richard answered, “They'll be replaced before anyone notices.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Daniel's voice followed.
“Dad never checks the vault himself anymore. He trusts me to handle the family assets.””
I gripped the counter.
I had trusted Daniel with my company because he was my son. I had allowed him to oversee investment decisions, negotiate acquisitions, and represent the family in meetings.
I had trusted him because, after Catherine died, he had been the only person left who understood what her absence felt like.
Now I was hearing him discuss replacing her diamonds with fakes.
“Stop the recording,” I said.
Jasmine paused it.
I turned to Richard.
“How long have you known about this?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Marcus, the situation is more complicated than it sounds.””
“How long?””
He looked toward the office.
“About four months.””
Four months.
During those four months, Richard had attended my quarterly management meetings. He had shaken my hand at a charity dinner. He had congratulated me on the company's expansion into Nashville.
And all the while, he had apparently been helping my son steal from me.
“Why?”” I asked.
Richard's mouth trembled before he forced himself to speak.
“Daniel said the jewelry was being moved as part of a private family arrangement. He told us you had approved it.””
“Did you see my authorization?””
“No.””
“Did you ask for it?””
Richard looked down.
“No.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“You manage a luxury jewelry store. You don't release an $85,000 bracelet without paperwork, but you'll move my dead wife's diamonds because my son says it's all right?””
He had no answer.
Vanessa crossed her arms again, but the gesture no longer looked confident.
“Daniel said his father was planning to restructure the company,” she said.
“We were told the diamonds were part of an investment agreement.””
“An investment agreement?””
“Yes.””
“Where is that agreement?””
She hesitated.
Richard closed his eyes.
I turned toward him.
“Where is it?””
“In the corporate records.””
“Then we're going to find it.””
I reached for my phone and called my chief financial officer, Helen Price.
She answered on the second ring.
“Marcus? Is everything all right?””
“No. I need you to freeze every pending ownership transfer involving Bennett Luxury Holdings. Effective immediately.””
There was a brief silence.
“Which transfer?””
“The restructuring agreement scheduled for Friday. And Helen, don't notify Daniel until you've secured the relevant records.””
Her voice sharpened.
“Marcus, are you saying there's a problem with the agreement?””
“I'm saying I need to know exactly what I signed and what I haven't signed.””
“Understood. I'll review the file and call you back.””
I ended the call.
Richard stared at me.
“You can't freeze the agreement without reviewing the legal consequences.””
“I just did.””
“You could trigger penalties.””
“Then we'll deal with them.””
For the first time, I saw genuine anger in his face.
“You're making a serious mistake.””
“No, Richard. My mistake was believing that loyalty was the same thing as honesty.””
I turned to Jasmine.
“Do you have copies of these recordings?””
“Yes. Two copies, actually. One is stored in a private account.””
“Good. Don't send them to anyone else until our legal team contacts you.””
She nodded.
Then she looked at me with an expression I couldn't quite read.
“Mr. Bennett, there's something I haven't told you.””
I waited.
“The night I recorded that video, I wasn't supposed to be working. I came back because I left my bag in the break room.””
She glanced at Richard.
“When I heard voices in the office, I thought someone had broken in. I started recording from the hallway.””
“And?””
Jasmine's fingers tightened around her phone.
“I heard Daniel ask Richard whether the family vault had been checked.””
My heartbeat quickened.
“What did Richard say?””
“He said the vault was already taken care of.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I remembered the last time I had visited the vault. It had been six weeks earlier, when I retrieved Catherine's wedding ring to have its setting repaired. Daniel had accompanied me, insisting that the old security system needed updating.
He had entered the access code himself.
I had never questioned it.
“Did you hear anything else?”” I asked.
Jasmine nodded slowly.
“Daniel said the original diamonds had already been sold.””
I stared at her.
“Sold to whom?””
“He didn't say. But Richard asked whether the buyer knew where the stones had come from.””
“And what did Daniel say?””
Jasmine looked down at the phone.
“He said the buyer wasn't the person we should be worried about.””
My throat tightened.
“Who should we be worried about?””
She lifted her eyes to mine.
“His exact words were, ‘If Dad discovers the truth, he'll lose more than the diamonds.’”
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.
Helen had sent a message.
*Marcus, I found the ownership agreement. You need to come to headquarters immediately. Daniel's name isn't just on the restructuring documents. There's a second agreement attached, and it appears to transfer control of your private family trust.*
A second message arrived before I could finish reading the first.
*There's also a signature on the document that appears to be yours. But the date is from three weeks ago, when you were overseas.*
I looked at the screen, then slowly raised my eyes toward Richard.
“What exactly did my son plan to take from me?””
Richard's lips parted.
For a moment, I thought he might finally tell me the truth.
Instead, he whispered, “Ask Daniel why your wife changed her will before she died.””
My entire body went still.
Catherine had never told me she had changed her will.
And if Richard knew something about her final days that I didn't, then the theft of her diamonds might have been only the beginning.
I called my son.
He answered almost immediately.
“Dad! Perfect timing,” Daniel said cheerfully.
“I was just about to call you. We need to talk before Friday.””
I stared at the ownership agreement on my phone.
“Funny,” I replied.
“I was just thinking the same thing.””
He laughed.
“Everything okay?””
I looked at Jasmine, who was watching me with frightened eyes.
Then I asked the question I had never imagined asking my own child.
“Daniel, what happened to your mother's diamonds?””
The silence on the other end lasted three seconds.
May you like
Then my son said something that changed everything.
“Dad, before you do anything, there's something you need to know about Mom's death.””
