Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Lie

I read the letter silently.

Then I read it again.

My father noticed my expression.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

My mother’s handwriting filled the page.

Emily,

There is something you need to understand about your father.

He is a good man.

But good people can still make mistakes.

I looked up.

Dad was watching me.

“What?””

I continued.

Your father believes he knows the truth about what happened before I died.

He doesn’t.

My chest tightened.

Dad slowly sat down.

“What does that mean?””

I kept reading.

The hardest part about loving someone is accepting that they can hurt you without meaning to.

I hid something from Daniel because I was afraid of what would happen if he knew.

The document I left behind was not about money.

It was about the truth.

I stopped.

“The document…”

Dad leaned forward.

“What document?””

I turned the page.

There was a name.

A lawyer.

A date.

And one sentence.

Ask Daniel why he changed my will.

The room went completely silent.

I looked at my father.

He looked like he had been punched.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

Dad stood.

“No.””

Tara looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“That’s not possible.””

I stared.

“What is she talking about?””

He shook his head.

“She’s wrong.””

“About what?””

He looked at the letter.

Then at me.

“I never changed your mother’s will.””

“But Mom thought you did.””

“No.””

His face showed something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of Tara.

Fear of the past.

“Dad.””

He sat down slowly.

“There was a lawyer.””

“What lawyer?””

“Your mother’s lawyer.””

“And?””

“He contacted me after she died.””

“What did he say?””

Dad looked at the floor.

“He said your mother updated some documents.””

I waited.

“And?””

“I didn’t ask questions.””

“Why?””

“Because I was grieving.””

That answer didn’t feel complete.

I could tell.

“Telling the truth is easier now than hiding it.””

Dad looked at Tara.

“What do you know?””

Tara wiped her eyes.

“I know your mother was suspicious before she died.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Of someone manipulating your family.””

The room went quiet again.

“Who?””

Tara looked at the folder.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

Dad walked away.

He paced through the kitchen.

“You both think I’m the villain.””

“No,” I said.

But I wasn’t sure.

That was the worst part.

I loved my dad.

I trusted him.

But my mother’s final letter had planted a question.

And questions were dangerous.

Especially ones that had been buried for years.

My phone rang.

Rachel again.

I answered immediately.

“Rachel, what happened?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Emily, listen carefully.””

“What?””

“You cannot let Daniel destroy the folder.””

I froze.

“What?””

Dad looked at me.

Rachel continued.

“The documents inside prove who changed your mother’s inheritance plan.””

I looked at the folder.

“It’s already open.””

“Then you need to check the signature.””

“What signature?””

“The person who filed the change.””

I turned through the papers.

There were legal documents.

Bank records.

A copy of a revised will.

And at the bottom of the final page…

A signature.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized it.

Not from the paperwork.

From years of watching bills get signed.

School forms.

Permission slips.

Birthday cards.

The signature belonged to my father.

I looked up.

Dad was staring at the page.

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I saw him look afraid of himself.
