Chapter 14: The Last Hidden Truth

I read Tara’s message again.

Then again.

Don’t believe everything Michael tells you.

It should have made me angry.

After everything she had hidden, she still wanted me to question the truth.

But something bothered me.

Tara had been afraid of Michael from the beginning.

Not of me.

Not of the inheritance.

Him.

I looked at Dad.

“Tara knows we met Michael.””

He frowned.

“How?””

I showed him the message.

His expression hardened.

“Call her.””

I did.

She answered immediately.

“Emily.””

Her voice sounded like she had been waiting.

“Why did you tell me not to believe him?””

A long pause.

“Because Michael is good at telling half the truth.””

Dad grabbed the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Tara became quiet.

Then she said:

“It means he wasn’t the only person who changed the documents.””

My father froze.

“What?””

“I didn’t want to believe it.””

“Believe what?””

“That someone else used Michael.””

I looked at Dad.

“Who?””

Tara didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The silence was enough.

“No,” Dad whispered.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Dad?””

He looked away.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

But he wasn’t looking at me.

He was looking at the past.

At something he already knew.

“Tara,” Dad said into the phone.

“Tell us.””

Her voice trembled.

“I found proof.””

“Where?””

“In the old apartment.””

My heart raced.

“We already searched there.””

“You searched the cabinet.””

“What else is there?””

Tara hesitated.

“The floor.””

We drove back immediately.

Nobody talked.

Not because we had nothing to say.

Because we were afraid of what we would discover.

Inside the apartment, Tara went straight to the bedroom.

She knelt beside the old wooden floor.

“There.””

She pointed.

A loose board.

Michael looked shocked.

“You knew about this?””

Tara looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you open it?””

“Because your sister told me not to.””

Everyone stopped.

Dad stared.

“My sister?””

Tara nodded.

“Your sister knew.””

I felt dizzy.

“There’s another person?””

Dad looked like he was putting together a puzzle.

“My sister…”

He whispered a name.

“Rebecca.””

He opened the floorboard.

Inside was a small metal box.

No lock.

No key.

Just a stack of papers.

And one letter.

Dad picked it up.

The handwriting wasn’t my mother’s.

It was Rebecca’s.

Daniel,

I know you will hate me for this.

But I had to protect the family.

I watched Michael make mistakes.

I watched Tara try to fix them.

And I watched you ignore the warning signs.

The truth is simple.

The person who changed the will was not Michael.

He only helped cover it.

The real person was someone who had access to your home.

Someone who knew every password.

Every account.

Every document.

My father went pale.

Because there was only one person who fit.

Someone who had lived in our house.

Someone who had handled our family’s paperwork.

Someone he trusted completely.

The letter continued.

Daniel, I am sorry.

But you need to know.

Your first wife discovered that the person she feared most…

was you.

I stopped reading.

The room disappeared.

Dad took the paper from my hand.

He read the sentence.

And for the first time, I saw him break.

Not as a father.

Not as a husband.

As a man realizing he might have been the reason everything fell apart.

Then another paper slipped from the box.

A bank record.

A transfer.

A date.

The day after my mother died.

And the name receiving the money was not Michael.

Not Tara.

May you like

Not Rebecca.

It was Daniel Carter.
