Chapter 4: The Secret in the Basement
Nobody moved.
The woman standing at the bottom of the basement stairs was not Megan.
She was older.
Maybe in her fifties.
Her face was bruised, her clothes were torn, and she was holding onto the railing like every step was taking the last bit of strength she had left.
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time that night, I saw something I had not expected.
Pure fear.
“No,” Daniel whispered.
The woman looked directly at him.
“Yes, Daniel.””
Her voice was shaking.
“You thought you buried the truth with me.””
Officer Reed immediately moved between Daniel and the stairs.
“Ma’am, come upstairs slowly.””
The woman nodded.
But before she moved, she looked at the parrot.
The bird stared back.
Almost like it recognized her.
“You kept him alive,” she whispered.
I frowned.
“Who are you?””
She reached the top of the stairs and collapsed into the nearest chair.
“My name is Laura Bennett.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She’s lying.””
Laura laughed weakly.
“Of course you’d say that.””
Officer Reed looked at Daniel.
“You know her?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stepped closer to Laura.
“Tell us what happened.””
Laura looked at the bird cage.
“That parrot saved my life.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“No.””
Laura ignored him.
“I worked for Daniel’s company. I knew things I wasn’t supposed to know.””
“What things?”” Reed asked.
She looked at Daniel.
“The money.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel stared at her.
“Don’t.””
Laura continued.
“Daniel was moving company funds through fake accounts. Millions of dollars.””
Daniel laughed.
“She’s unstable.””
Laura looked at me.
“That’s what he told everyone.””
She pulled a small plastic card from inside her torn jacket.
“I copied the files before he caught me.””
Daniel took a step forward.
Officer Reed immediately raised his weapon.
“Stay where you are.””
Daniel stopped.
“You don’t understand what she did.””
I looked at him.
“What did she do?””
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“She betrayed me.””
Laura shook her head.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“I tried to expose you.””
She pointed toward the basement.
“And that’s why he locked me down there.””
I looked at Megan.
Then Laura.
Two women.
Two victims.
One house.
One man.
My radio suddenly crackled.
“Officer Carter, additional units are arriving. Are all individuals secure?””
I reached for it.
“Negative. Suspect is still inside.””
Daniel suddenly looked toward the front door.
Then toward the windows.
Like he was calculating something.
I noticed.
He wasn’t listening.
He was planning.
“Daniel,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Where is the parrot?””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
The bird was gone.
I looked toward the empty cage.
The door was open.
“Where did you put it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Laura suddenly gasped.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
“He’s going to destroy the evidence.””
“What evidence?”” Reed asked.
Laura pointed upstairs.
“The bird didn’t just remember my voice.””
A chill went through me.
“What do you mean?””
She swallowed.
“Daniel taught him phrases because he wanted him to sound human.””
She looked at the empty cage.
“But the bird learned something else.””
“What?””
Laura whispered:
“He recorded everything.””
My stomach tightened.
The bird had been repeating conversations.
Not movies.
Not random phrases.
Evidence.
Daniel suddenly moved.
Fast.
He grabbed the kitchen drawer.
But Reed tackled him before he could open it.
A small metal key fell onto the floor.
I picked it up.
Daniel stared at me.
“No.””
I looked at the key.
“What does this open?””
Nobody answered.
Then the parrot screamed from somewhere upstairs.
“THE SAFE!””
Daniel’s face went pale.
Laura whispered:
“He knows where it is.””
We rushed upstairs.
The sound came from a bedroom at the end of the hallway.
The door was slightly open.
Inside was a large wooden cabinet.
Behind it was a hidden safe.
The parrot sat on top of the dresser.
Holding something in its beak.
A tiny recording device.
Daniel stared at it.
“No…”
The bird dropped it.
It landed at my feet.
I picked it up.
A red light blinked.
Still recording.
I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Daniel’s voice.
“You should have kept your mouth shut.””
A woman cried.
Then another voice.
Megan.
“Daniel, please.””
Daniel’s voice returned.
“You don’t know what I’m capable of.””
Everyone became silent.
The recording continued.
Then came a sentence that made my blood run cold.
Daniel whispered:
“If anyone finds out what happened to Laura, you’ll join her.””
Megan covered her mouth.
Daniel lunged toward the device.
Reed stopped him.
“It's over.””
But Daniel looked at the bird.
Not us.
The bird.
“You have no idea what that thing recorded.””
The parrot tilted its head.
Then calmly said:
“I know everything.””
And Daniel smiled.
May you like
Not because he was safe.
Because he knew something we didn’t.
