Chapter 11: The Return of the Dead

Footsteps moved above us.

Slow.

Heavy.

Everyone stared at the basement stairs.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew the same thing.

Someone else was in the house.

Voss smiled.

Not surprised.

Waiting.

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew he was coming.””

Voss didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Officer Reed stepped forward.

“You set this up.””

Voss looked at him.

“You were never smart enough to understand the entire plan.””

Reed’s face tightened.

“You promised me protection.””

Voss laughed.

“And you believed me?””

That was the moment Reed realized he had been disposable too.

The footsteps came closer.

Then a shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.

A man stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My breath disappeared.

Because I knew that face.

Even after all these years.

“Dad?””

The man looked at me.

His eyes filled with tears.

“Megan.””

I couldn’t move.

Every emotion hit me at once.

Anger.

Relief.

Pain.

Confusion.

I wanted to run toward him.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I whispered:

“Why?””

My father walked down slowly.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You abandoned me.””

His face broke.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know.””

Everyone stayed silent.

Because this wasn’t a police case anymore.

It was a family wound.

My father stopped in front of me.

“I saw what they were willing to do.””

He looked at Voss.

“I knew they would come after you.””

Voss smiled.

“You always were dramatic.””

My father looked at him.

“And you always underestimated your own mistakes.””

Voss’s expression changed.

My father reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small memory card.

“This is what you wanted.””

Everyone looked at it.

Voss stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel stared.

“What is it?””

My father looked at me.

“The original evidence.””

He swallowed.

“The files that prove everything.””

Laura stepped closer.

“Why didn’t you release them?””

My father looked ashamed.

“Because the evidence also exposed someone I loved.””

Everyone waited.

Then he looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.””

My father nodded.

“I found out your mother wasn’t just working with Voss.””

Daniel went still.

“She was the one who started it.””

Silence.

Daniel looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

Voss interrupted.

“Enough.””

He reached into his jacket.

Reed immediately raised his weapon.

But Voss smiled.

“Still protecting people who don’t deserve it?””

Reed hesitated.

That hesitation told us everything.

Voss had control over him.

My father looked at me.

“Megan, you need to listen carefully.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

“The recording you heard…”

He looked at the parrot.

“It wasn’t the whole message.””

The bird suddenly became agitated.

It started screaming.

“NO!””

Everyone turned.

The parrot flew around the room.

My father looked terrified.

“Voss taught him that.””

“What?””

My father pointed at the bird.

“The parrot doesn’t just repeat memories.””

A pause.

“It repeats what it was forced to hear.””

I looked at the bird.

“What does that mean?””

My father’s expression became darker.

“It means someone edited the recordings.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Then who made it sound like Megan betrayed you?””

Nobody answered.

The basement went silent.

Then the parrot spoke.

A voice we had not heard before.

A woman.

Daniel’s mother.

“I told you she would be useful.””

Daniel froze.

The bird continued.

“She’ll take the blame.””

Daniel whispered:

“Mom…”

Voss looked annoyed.

“Enough.””

But it was too late.

The bird had opened another door.

A hidden truth.

My father looked at Daniel.

“She wasn’t protecting you.””

Daniel stared.

“She was protecting herself.””

Then the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

And the basement went dark again.

When my flashlight came back on…

May you like

Voss was gone.

And the memory card was missing.
