Chapter 5: The Judge Who Was Framed
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The security officer’s words repeated in my head.
It was you.
Not Officer Cole.
Not Rachel.
Me.
Someone had opened my sealed files using my credentials.
My identity.
My access code.
My name.
“Explain,” I said.
The officer rushed to answer.
“Judge Bennett, the system shows your judicial login accessed the files at 11:42 p.m. last night.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“No,” I said firmly.
“You don’t understand. I was at home.””
“We’re checking building cameras now.””
I looked at the computer screen.
The video of Judge Hale and Rachel was still frozen.
A perfect picture of betrayal.
But suddenly, there was something else.
Someone wanted me distracted.
Someone wanted me looking in one direction while they created evidence pointing at me.
“I need a copy of those access logs,” I said.
The officer hesitated.
“Judge…”
“Now.””
“Yes, Your Honor.””
I ended the call.
Elena watched me carefully.
“They’re setting you up.””
“I know.””
“And they’re using your own system against you.””
“I know.””
She lowered her voice.
“Judge, you need to step away from the case.””
I looked at her.
“What case?””
She paused.
“The trial in Courtroom 4B.””
I understood what she meant.
The entire morning had become impossible.
A judge assaulted.
A police officer accused.
Evidence connected to courthouse corruption.
Every decision I made would be questioned.
But stepping away was exactly what someone wanted.
“No.””
Elena frowned.
“No?””
“If I leave the bench right now, they control the story.””
“Your Honor—”
“They want people to believe I’m compromised.””
She looked at my injured face.
“They attacked you.””
“Yes.””
“Then let someone protect you.””
I looked through the glass wall toward the courtroom.
“I don’t need protection from the truth.””
Before Elena could answer, there was a knock.
A young court clerk entered.
“Judge Bennett?””
“Yes?””
“Officer Cole is requesting a private meeting.””
Elena immediately shook her head.
“Absolutely not.””
I stared at the clerk.
“Where is he?””
“He’s waiting in the conference room.””
I knew I shouldn’t go.
Every instinct told me it was a trap.
But sometimes traps only work when you refuse to look inside them.
“I’ll meet him.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Judge—”
“I won’t be alone.””
I entered the conference room with Elena and two security officers behind me.
Officer Cole sat at the table.
Without his uniform jacket.
Without his confidence.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
“Judge Bennett.””
I remained standing.
“Officer Cole.””
He looked at my bruised cheek.
“I didn’t mean for that to happen.””
The apology was weak.
Late.
Empty.
“You struck me.””
“I thought you were a defendant.””
“You knew who I was.””
His eyes moved away.
That tiny movement confirmed everything.
“I made an error.””
“No.””
I leaned forward slightly.
“You made a decision.””
He looked back at me.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“Then explain.””
He hesitated.
Then he whispered:
“Someone wanted you removed.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
He looked toward the security officers.
Then back at me.
“I can’t say.””
“You can.””
“No.””
His fear was real now.
Not fake.
Not the arrogance from the hallway.
Fear.
“Officer Cole,” I said, “you assaulted a judge, accessed restricted areas, and are connected to missing evidence. You are already in trouble.””
He swallowed.
“You think I’m the villain.””
“Aren’t you?””
His jaw tightened.
“I did what I was told.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
“By whom?””
He looked at me.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Your clerk.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Rachel?””
Cole nodded.
“She gave me your schedule.””
My heart sank.
“She told you I would enter through the public lobby?””
“Yes.””
“She knew the elevator was broken?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Cole looked down.
“Because she knew you would be alone.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I remembered Rachel’s smile.
Her kindness.
The way she brought coffee to my chambers during long hearings.
All of it felt different now.
“Why would she want me attacked?”” I asked.
Cole didn’t answer.
He reached into his pocket and placed something on the table.
A small envelope.
“I was supposed to give you this after you were arrested.””
I opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
And at the top of the page was a heading that made my blood run cold.
“Judges targeted for removal.””
My name was number one.
But beneath mine was another name.
One I recognized.
Elena looked over my shoulder.
“Judge Bennett…”
I stared at the final entry.
Because it explained everything.
The person behind this operation wasn’t trying to destroy my career.
May you like
They were trying to destroy the entire courthouse.
And the last name on the list was the one person I never expected.
