Chapter 14: The Last Hearing
The next morning, the courthouse was surrounded.
News cameras lined the streets.
Reporters shouted questions.
“Judge Bennett, did you falsify evidence?””
“Are you resigning?””
“Is the investigation true?””
I walked past them without answering.
For the first time in my career, I entered the courthouse without a robe.
Without authority.
Without protection.
But I had something I didn’t have before.
The truth.
Inside, Elena, Rachel, Marcus, and Officer Cole waited in a conference room.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood what was happening.
The hearing scheduled for that morning was supposed to remove me permanently.
Instead, it would expose the entire operation.
“If this fails,” Elena said, “we don’t get another chance.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I looked at the files spread across the table.
The recordings.
The evidence.
The proof.
“No.””
Everyone looked surprised.
I continued.
“I’m not sure.””
I picked up the recording.
“But I’m done pretending certainty is required before doing what’s right.””
Minutes later, the hearing began.
The courtroom was packed.
Judges.
Lawyers.
Reporters.
The public.
Chief Justice Adrian Cross sat at the front.
Calm.
Confident.
Like he had already won.
The investigator presented the allegations.
The forged documents.
The suspicious access logs.
Everything pointing toward me.
Then Cross stood.
“Your Honor, this situation is unfortunate.””
I almost laughed.
Unfortunate.
That was his word.
He looked at the panel.
“A respected judge has fallen into personal misconduct.””
I watched him carefully.
He was performing.
Just like he always had.
Then it was my turn.
I stood.
The room went silent.
“I would like to submit new evidence.””
Cross’s expression changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
The first sign of fear.
The panel reviewed the evidence.
The recording was played.
My younger voice filled the courtroom.
The room changed instantly.
People looked confused.
Then concerned.
Then angry.
Cross remained still.
Until his own voice appeared.
“You don’t understand what you’re risking.””
The courtroom erupted.
The chief justice’s voice.
On tape.
From twelve years earlier.
The panel demanded silence.
I looked directly at Cross.
“You knew.””
He stared back.
“You’re misunderstanding the recording.””
“No.””
I placed the Harrington evidence on the table.
“You altered evidence.””
The room went silent.
Cross smiled.
“You don’t have proof.””
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Victor Lang walked in.
Every person turned.
Security guards moved toward him.
He raised his hands.
“I’m here to testify.””
Cross’s face changed.
Just for a second.
Victor walked forward.
“I helped him.””
The confession echoed.
“I helped Chief Justice Cross manipulate cases.””
The room exploded.
Reporters rushed.
The panel demanded order.
Victor continued.
“I thought I was protecting the court.””
He looked at me.
“I was wrong.””
Cross finally spoke.
“Victor, you have no idea what you’re saying.””
Victor laughed quietly.
“No.””
He looked around.
“I know exactly what I’m saying.””
Then he pulled out his phone.
“I recorded every conversation.””
Cross went pale.
For the first time, the man who controlled everyone looked powerless.
But then his expression changed.
A smile.
Small.
Confident.
I noticed.
And I knew.
He had another move.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
“Check the original recording.””
My blood froze.
May you like
Because the message came from a number I recognized.
Mine.
