Chapter 9

I screamed at Daniel over the phone.

“You are not going alone.”

“I know.”

“He asked for you.”

“I know.”

“Then why do you sound like you’re considering it?”

“Because they have Lily.”

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

An agent beside me was already communicating with Torres.

Daniel continued.

“I’m not trading my life for the company.”

“Good.”

“I’m trading the company for Lily.”

I closed my eyes.

That was different.

And I knew I would do the same.

Hale wanted Daniel to sign documents transferring control of Caldwell Holdings.

The meeting point was an abandoned warehouse owned by one of Marcus’s shell companies.

Federal agents believed it was a trap.

Of course it was.

The question was whether we could turn the trap around.

Marcus knew the building.

“I bought it for Hale two years ago,” he admitted.

Daniel looked at him.

“Any hidden entrances?”

“One loading tunnel on the south side.”

Torres started planning.

I interrupted.

“I’m going.”

“No,” Daniel said.

I looked at him.

He stopped himself.

Torres answered instead.

“Mrs. Caldwell, your presence adds another hostage.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

Torres held my gaze.

Then she surprised me.

“You’re right.”

Daniel turned.

“Agent—”

“She’s not entering the warehouse,” Torres said. “But I won’t tell a mother to sit fifteen miles away while we rescue her child.”

I went in the command vehicle.

Daniel wore a recording device.

Agents positioned themselves around the warehouse.

Marcus was supposed to remain secure.

Instead, five minutes before Daniel entered, Marcus disappeared.

Torres cursed.

“Where did he go?”

A camera showed him walking toward the warehouse from the east side.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“That idiot.”

I knew immediately.

“He’s trying to fix it.”

Daniel looked at me.

“For once in his life.”

Inside the warehouse, Daniel found Hale waiting beside a metal table.

Lily was nowhere visible.

Through Daniel’s microphone, I heard Hale say, “You brought company.”

Daniel replied, “I came alone.”

“Federal agents count as company.”

My heart stopped.

Hale knew.

Again.

Torres whispered orders.

Teams held position.

Hale continued.

“Your government friends should understand that if anyone comes through those doors, your daughter disappears permanently.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel’s voice stayed controlled.

“I need to see her.”

“You’re not in a position to demand anything.”

“No Lily, no signature.”

Silence.

Then we heard movement.

A door opened.

Lily cried, “Daddy!”

I nearly tore the headphones off.

Daniel’s breathing changed.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Did anyone touch you?”

A man ordered Lily to be quiet.

Daniel’s voice became deadly.

“If you hurt her—”

Hale laughed.

“You people always become predictable when children are involved.”

“Give me the papers.”

Hale placed documents on the table.

Agents watching through a hidden camera zoomed in.

Daniel picked up a pen.

“Release Lily first.”

“Sign.”

“No.”

“Then she stays.”

Daniel put the pen down.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then Marcus walked into the warehouse.

Hale sounded genuinely surprised.

“Well.”

Daniel spun.

“What are you doing here?”

Marcus ignored him.

He looked at Hale.

“You don’t need Daniel.”

Hale smiled.

“You’ve become brave.”

“No.”

Marcus’s voice shook.

“I’m terrified.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because this started with me.”

Daniel whispered, “Marcus, leave.”

Marcus shook his head.

“My whole life, somebody cleaned up after me.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Mom. Lawyers. You sometimes.”

Daniel said nothing.

“I thought consequences were things that happened to other people.”

Hale’s smile vanished.

Marcus continued.

“I damaged your car because I was afraid of losing money.”

Daniel stared.

“I let Vanessa drug you because I was afraid of prison.”

He looked toward where Lily was being held.

“And now a six-year-old is paying for what I did.”

Hale said, “Touching.”

Marcus removed a flash drive from his pocket.

“I copied everything.”

Hale went still.

“Every transaction. Every account. Every company.”

Torres leaned toward the audio feed.

“What is he doing?”

I knew.

“He’s bargaining.”

Marcus raised the drive.

“Let Lily and Daniel go. You take this.”

Hale laughed.

“You think I believe that’s the only copy?”

“No.”

“Then it’s worthless.”

“Not the drive.”

Marcus swallowed.

“The password.”

Hale stopped smiling.

Daniel stared at his brother.

Marcus continued.

“The federal agents have encrypted files. They don’t have the password.”

Torres looked at an analyst.

The analyst shook his head.

“He’s lying. We already accessed most of them.”

Marcus was bluffing.

Hale didn’t know.

“What password?” Hale asked.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Let Lily walk to Daniel.”

A long silence.

Then Lily appeared on camera.

My knees nearly failed.

A man held her shoulder.

She was crying but walking.

Daniel dropped the pen.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

Hale raised a hand.

The man stopped Lily halfway.

“Password first.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Halfway is not the deal.”

Hale stared at him.

Then nodded.

Lily was released.

She ran.

Daniel dropped to his knees despite the pain and caught her.

I sobbed.

Torres gave the signal.

Agents moved.

But Hale had expected it.

The warehouse lights died.

Gunfire erupted.

Not continuous.

Three sharp shots.

Then screaming.

The command feed turned chaotic.

“Daniel!”

No one answered me.

Torres shouted into her radio.

Agents entered through multiple doors.

I could hear Lily crying through Daniel’s microphone.

Then Daniel’s voice.

“Stay down!”

Another shot.

A man yelled.

Then Marcus screamed.

The sound cut through everything.

“Marcus!”

Daniel shouted his brother’s name.

Minutes felt like hours.

Finally Torres received confirmation.

“Hale is in custody.”

I grabbed her arm.

“Lily?”

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“Safe.”

“Daniel?”

“Safe.”

“Marcus?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

My stomach dropped.

“Marcus?”

“He’s been shot.”

I went cold.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

We reached the warehouse after paramedics secured the scene.

Lily ran toward me.

I fell to my knees and grabbed her.

“Mommy!”

I kissed her hair.

Her face.

Her hands.

Every part of her I could reach.

“I’m here.”

“Daddy saved me.”

I looked up.

Daniel sat on the concrete floor several feet away.

His cane was gone.

His face was bruised.

He smiled weakly.

I crawled to him with Lily still in my arms.

Then I saw Marcus.

Paramedics were working on him.

Blood covered one side of his shirt.

Evelyn’s favorite son.

Daniel’s greatest enemy.

The man who had caused the accident.

The man who had just walked into a trap to save Lily.

Daniel tried to stand.

He couldn’t.

“Marcus.”

A paramedic pushed him back.

“Stay where you are.”

Marcus turned his head.

His eyes found Daniel.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel looked shattered.

“You already said that.”

“I know.”

“Save your breath.”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“You always tell me what to do.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Just this once, listen.”

Marcus coughed.

Daniel leaned closer.

“You don’t get to die and make me forgive you.”

A weak laugh came from Marcus.

“Wasn’t planning to.”

“Good.”

Marcus looked at Lily.

“Is she okay?”

Daniel nodded.

“She’s okay.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Paramedics lifted him onto a stretcher.

As they carried him away, Agent Torres approached.

“Hale is being transported under guard.”

“What about Richard?” I asked.

“He’s alive.”

I almost collapsed again.

“Where?”

“Hospital. He fought the man who took Lily. He was knocked unconscious.”

Lily looked at me.

“Grandpa tried to stop them.”

“I know.”

“He told me to run.”

My heart hurt.

Richard had spent decades absent from Daniel’s life.

But when it mattered, he had put himself between Lily and danger.

Daniel heard her.

His expression changed.

Maybe some relationships could never recover lost years.

But they could still choose what happened next.

At the hospital, Marcus went into emergency surgery.

Richard had a concussion and broken wrist.

Lily refused to leave his room until she knew he was awake.

When Richard opened his eyes, she said, “You lost.”

He blinked.

“What?”

“The fight.”

Richard laughed painfully.

“I noticed.”

“But you were brave.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Thank you.”

Daniel stood in the doorway using a walker.

Richard saw him.

Neither spoke.

Then Daniel entered.

“I heard what you did.”

Richard looked away.

“I should’ve done more.”

“You protected my daughter.”

“I failed.”

“She’s alive.”

Richard nodded.

Daniel swallowed.

Then said the word his father had waited years to hear.

“Thanks, Dad.”

Richard began crying.

Daniel looked embarrassed.

“Don’t make this dramatic.”

Richard laughed through tears.

“You’re a Caldwell. Everything is dramatic.”

For once, Daniel laughed too.

Then Agent Torres appeared.

Her expression told me the night wasn’t finished.

“What?”

She looked at Daniel.

“We searched Hale’s phone.”

“And?”

“There are messages between Hale and Evelyn.”

Daniel went still.

“About what?”

Torres hesitated.

“Your accident.”

I took Daniel’s hand.

Torres continued.

“Evelyn knew more than she admitted.”

Daniel’s face closed.

“How much more?”

May you like

Torres looked directly at him.

“Enough that we’re adding conspiracy charges.”
