Chapter 7

By evening, the story was bigger than our family.
That somehow made it worse.
I had wanted one villain.
Vanessa.
Then Marcus.
Then Evelyn.
Now there was Victor Hale, a man I had never met whose shadow apparently stretched over all of them.
Agent Torres explained that Hale presented himself publicly as an investor.
Privately, he financed desperate businessmen at brutal terms.
Marcus had borrowed from him.
When Marcus couldn’t pay, Hale began using Caldwell Holdings to move money.
Daniel’s audit threatened to expose everything.
“So Hale ordered the accident?” I asked.
“We don’t know.”
Daniel looked at Torres.
“Marcus damaged my brakes.”
“Maybe.”
“My mother admitted she knew he was planning something.”
“She admitted Marcus told her he intended to frighten you. That’s not the same as proving he personally touched the brake line.”
Richard interrupted.
“I can identify the man who pressured the mechanic.”
Everyone turned.
“You saw him?”
“No. But Tom Reeves described him to me months ago.”
I stared.
“You spoke to Tom before he called us?”
Richard looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What else have you hidden?”
Richard exhaled.
“I contacted him after I learned about your crash. I suspected Marcus.”
“And you didn’t tell me.”
“You wouldn’t answer me.”
“Stop using that excuse.”
Richard nodded.
“You’re right.”
That surprised Daniel.
Richard continued.
“I should have found another way.”
The room became quieter.
I began to understand something.
Daniel and Richard were more alike than either wanted to admit.
Both believed secrecy was protection.
Both had lost years because of it.
Torres arranged protective housing.
Lily and I were taken to an apartment inside a secure federal facility.
Daniel refused to leave the investigation.
I refused to let him decide for me.
“I’m staying too.”
He looked at Lily.
“She needs rest.”
“She needs both parents.”
He nodded.
That night, after Lily fell asleep between us, Daniel whispered, “I’m sorry.”
I stared at the ceiling.
“For which part?”
“All of it.”
“That’s a lot.”
“I know.”
I turned toward him.
“You let me believe you couldn’t move.”
“I could barely stand.”
“You hid it.”
“Yes.”
“You suspected Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“You suspected Marcus.”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t trust me.”
He swallowed.
“That’s the part I’m most ashamed of.”
I studied his face.
“Why?”
“Because I knew you would fight.”
“That’s a bad thing?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
His voice became quiet.
“Because I knew you would fight even if it got you killed.”
I said nothing.
He continued.
“When I found out about the brake line, I stopped seeing danger as something that happened only to me.”
He looked at Lily.
“I thought if Marcus believed I was still helpless, he would leave you alone.”
“He didn’t.”
“No.”
“Because bad people don’t respect the rules you make for them.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I understand that now.”
I wanted to stay angry.
Part of me still was.
But another part remembered his shaking legs when he stood between Vanessa and Lily.
He had been terrified too.
“Never do it again.”
He opened his eyes.
“Never.”
“No secret recovery.”
A faint smile.
“No.”
“No secret investigation.”
“No.”
“No secret cars.”
He almost laughed.
“That one may be difficult.”
I hit his shoulder lightly.
He winced theatrically.
For one second, we were us again.
Then Agent Torres knocked.
She looked grim.
“We found Vanessa.”
I sat up.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Daniel exhaled.
“Where?”
“Hospital.”
“What happened?”
“She escaped the person who grabbed her. She was found near a gas station.”
“Can she talk?”
“Yes.”
Torres looked directly at me.
“She’s asking for you.”
I didn’t want to go.
Every time I pictured Vanessa, I saw Lily falling.
But I needed answers.
So I went.
Two agents guarded Vanessa’s hospital room.
Her face was bruised.
One wrist was bandaged.
When she saw me, she cried.
I felt nothing.
“You wanted me.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
She blinked.
“No?”
“You don’t get to start there.”
Her lips trembled.
“You kicked my daughter.”
“I know.”
“You put drugs in my husband’s body for months.”
“I know.”
“You watched me think he was getting worse.”
Tears rolled down her face.
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
The simplicity disgusted me.
“How much?”
“Ten thousand a month.”
“For ten thousand dollars you destroyed my family?”
“At first I thought it was harmless.”
“Drugging a man is harmless?”
“They told me the medications were prescribed.”
“By Wynn?”
“Yes.”
“You’re a caregiver. You knew better.”
She looked away.
“Yes.”
“At what point did you understand?”
“Second month.”
“And you stayed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She started crying harder.
“Because Marcus had videos.”
“Of what?”
“My brother.”
I frowned.
“He has a drug problem. Marcus had evidence that could put him in prison.”
“So you chose my husband instead.”
“I was scared.”
“So was Lily.”
Vanessa covered her face.
I let her cry.
Then I asked, “Who took you?”
“A man named Cole.”
Agent Torres, standing near the wall, reacted.
“Last name?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did he want?”
“The syringe.”
Daniel had been right to stop her reaching it.
“What was inside?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“A much stronger combination.”
“Would it have killed Daniel?”
“I don’t know.”
“Answer me.”
Her voice broke.
“Maybe.”
My stomach turned.
“Who told you to give it?”
“Evelyn called me.”
“Did Marcus know?”
“I don’t think so.”
That surprised me.
“Why not?”
“Marcus had started panicking. He wanted to stop everything.”
Torres stepped closer.
“When?”
“Two days ago.”
“What did he say?”
“He said Daniel’s recovery didn’t matter anymore. He said the merger vote was enough.”
“So why did Evelyn order a stronger dose?”
Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
“Because she said Daniel would ruin Marcus if he came back.”
I felt sick.
A mother had decided one son needed to be sacrificed to save another.
“Did Evelyn tell you to kill him?”
“No.”
“But she knew the dose was dangerous?”
“I told her.”
“And?”
Vanessa whispered, “She said, ‘Do what you were hired to do.’”
I closed my eyes.
Daniel would have to hear that.
I hated Evelyn for making him hear it.
Torres asked Vanessa about Victor Hale.
She immediately began shaking.
“He owns Marcus.”
“What does that mean?”
“Marcus borrowed money from him. Then Hale started asking for favors.”
“What kind?”
“Moving money through Caldwell properties.”
“Did Hale order Daniel’s accident?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who is Cole?”
“One of Hale’s men.”
“Why did he abduct you?”
“Because Evelyn got arrested.”
Torres frowned.
“That happened after your abduction.”
Vanessa stared at her.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“Cole told me Evelyn was going to be arrested before he grabbed me.”
Torres went still.
That meant the leak was deeper than we thought.
Someone knew federal plans before they happened.
Vanessa continued.
“He said Hale wanted everything cleaned up.”
“What does that mean?”
“Me. Tom Reeves. Anyone who could talk.”
I thought about the mechanic.
“Where is Tom?”
Torres looked away.
My heart sank.
“What happened?”
“We haven’t been able to locate him.”
I stood.
“Then find him.”
“We are.”
“Find him before Hale does.”
Torres nodded.
“We’re trying.”
Back at the secure apartment, Daniel listened while I told him what Vanessa said.
When I repeated his mother’s words, he didn’t react.
That frightened me more than anger.
He simply sat beside the window.
After a long time he said, “Marcus gets everything.”
“What?”
“All her protection.”
“This isn’t your fault.”
“I know.”
“I mean it.”
He nodded.
“She always told me I was stronger.”
I waited.
“When we were kids, if Marcus failed a test, she met with the teacher. If I failed, she said I should study harder.”
His voice remained calm.
“If Marcus crashed a car, she called an attorney. If I got into trouble, I lost privileges.”
“That was unfair.”
“I used to think it meant she trusted me more.”
He laughed quietly.
“Maybe it just meant I was easier to sacrifice.”
I took his hand.
He held mine tightly.
The next morning brought another shock.
Marcus walked into a federal field office with his own lawyer.
Voluntarily.
He asked for Agent Torres.
And he carried a hard drive containing financial records from Caldwell Holdings.
When Daniel saw him through the glass, fury transformed his face.
Marcus looked terrible.
Unshaven.
Eyes red.
Nothing like the polished man who used to bring Lily expensive toys.
Daniel entered the interview room.
I watched from outside.
Marcus looked at his brother’s legs.
“So it’s true.”
Daniel sat across from him.
“You sound like Vanessa.”
Marcus flinched.
“I didn’t tell her to hurt Lily.”
“You hired her.”
“To keep you weak.”
Daniel stared.
Marcus swallowed.
“I know what it sounds like.”
“It sounds like a confession.”
“It is.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Did you cut my brakes?”
Marcus began crying.
Actually crying.
“I wanted to scare you.”
“Answer the question.”
“I paid someone to damage the car.”
My hands went cold.
Daniel’s face became stone.
“You nearly killed me.”
“The instructions were to make the brakes fail slowly.”
“Brakes don’t negotiate.”
“I know.”
“Did Mom know?”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“She knew I was going to do something.”
“Did she know what?”
“No.”
Daniel sat back.
Marcus whispered, “I’m sorry.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Why are you here?”
Marcus looked toward the glass.
Toward me.
Toward the agents.
Then back at Daniel.
“Because Hale is going to kill all of us after the vote.”
Daniel stared.
Marcus slid the hard drive across the table.
“I can prove where the money went.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because I finally understand something Mom never did.”
“What?”
Marcus wiped his face.
“Saving me from consequences turned me into the kind of man who destroyed everyone around him.”
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus continued.
“The merger vote is tomorrow morning.”
“We know.”
“You need to stop it.”
“We will.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No. You don’t understand.”
He leaned closer.
“Hale doesn’t care whether the board approves anymore.”
Daniel frowned.
May you like
“Then what does he want?”
Marcus whispered, “He wants the company destroyed.”
