Chapter 4: The Basement Camera

“The camera in the basement?””

I stared at Patricia.

Vanessa went completely still.

For the first time since I'd walked into that kitchen, she wasn't arguing.

She wasn't defending herself.

She was calculating.

“What camera?”” I asked.

Patricia looked at her daughter.

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Mom, don't.””

Patricia swallowed.

“Daniel, please. Just look.””

I turned toward the basement door.

Vanessa moved in front of it.

“No.””

One word.

Too fast.

Too desperate.

My pulse hammered.

“Move.””

“This has gone far enough.””

“You're standing between me and something involving my daughter.””

“Because my mother is confused!””

Patricia's face tightened.

“I am not confused.””

Vanessa spun toward her.

“You promised me.””

And there it was.

Not denial.

A promise.

I looked toward the woman who had come to help assess the situation. She had heard it too.

“Vanessa,” she said calmly, “step away from the door.””

Vanessa's shoulders stiffened.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then she stepped aside.

I opened the basement door.

The light clicked on.

Caleb appeared behind me.

“Daniel?””

“Stay upstairs.””

His eyes widened.

“But—”

“Please.””

He nodded.

Emily stood beside him holding his hand.

That image nearly destroyed me.

My daughter had spent months needing protection.

And another child had been the one providing it.

I descended.

Patricia followed.

The basement smelled of detergent and cold concrete. Storage bins lined one wall. The washer and dryer sat near the utility sink.

I saw no camera.

“Where?””

Patricia pointed.

“Behind the shelf.””

I moved several boxes.

A small security camera was mounted near the ceiling, angled toward the laundry area and the bottom of the stairs.

I recognized it.

I'd bought two cameras after someone broke into a neighbor's garage.

One was installed over our back entrance.

The second had disappeared.

Vanessa told me it was defective and she'd returned it.

“You told me this was broken.””

Vanessa stood halfway down the stairs.

“It was.””

“Then why is it here?””

No answer.

I followed the cable to a small storage hub.

My hands were shaking.

“Password?””

“I don't remember.””

Patricia said, “Try Caleb's birthday.””

Vanessa glared at her.

I entered it.

The screen opened.

Dozens of dated recordings appeared.

My stomach twisted.

“How did you know the password?””

Patricia looked ashamed.

“Because Vanessa showed me one.””

“One what?””

She pointed toward the screen.

“A recording.””

I selected a file from three weeks earlier.

The footage began.

Empty basement.

Then Vanessa entered.

Emily followed her.

My daughter was wearing the yellow shirt I remembered from that week.

The camera had no clear audio at first, just muffled voices.

Vanessa pointed toward a basket of laundry.

Emily started folding.

I watched the timestamp.

Ten minutes.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Emily kept folding.

Then she stopped and rubbed her stomach.

Vanessa appeared again.

The audio became clearer.

“I'm hungry.””

Emily's voice.

Vanessa pointed toward the laundry.

“Finish.””

“But Daddy said dinner is at six.””

“Your daddy isn't here.””

I stopped breathing.

Emily looked toward the stairs.

“Can I have an apple?””

“No.””

“Please?””

“Stop asking.””

My hands clenched.

Then Vanessa leaned down until her face was close to Emily's.

“You want Daniel to come home and hear you've been difficult again?””

Emily shook her head.

“Then behave.””

I couldn't watch.

But I couldn't look away.

The footage jumped forward.

7:42 p.m.

Emily was still downstairs.

She had fallen asleep against a basket of towels.

I checked the date.

That night I'd returned home at 9:15.

Vanessa had told me Emily was already asleep because she'd had a busy day.

I remembered thanking Vanessa for getting her to bed.

“Turn it off,” Vanessa said.

I ignored her.

I clicked another file.

This one was worse.

Emily stood beside the utility sink crying.

“Please, Vanessa.””

“You know the rule.””

“I cleaned it.””

“You missed a spot.””

“I can't see it.””

Vanessa pointed.

“Then keep looking.””

Emily crouched and wiped the floor.

I heard Patricia crying behind me.

“I told her to stop.””

I turned.

“You saw this?””

“Only part of it.””

“How much?””

Patricia couldn't answer.

Vanessa suddenly rushed toward the storage hub.

I stepped between her and the device.

“Don't touch it.””

“I want this circus over.””

“You recorded yourself.””

“It was for security!””

“Then why is it aimed at the laundry area?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I looked at the files again.

There were months of recordings.

Some dates had been deleted.

Others remained.

Then I noticed a folder.

It wasn't labeled by date.

It was labeled with one word.

EMILY.

My skin went cold.

“Why is there a folder with my daughter's name?””

Vanessa stared at it.

Patricia whispered, “Daniel…”

I clicked.

Inside were short clips.

Dozens.

Emily cleaning.

Emily sitting alone.

Emily crying.

Emily asking for food.

One video showed Caleb sneaking downstairs with a granola bar.

Vanessa caught him.

She took the food from his hand.

Then she pointed upstairs.

The boy looked terrified.

I glanced toward the staircase.

Caleb had told the truth about everything.

I opened another clip.

This one showed Emily sitting on the basement steps.

Vanessa stood below her.

The audio was clear.

“You tell Daniel I gave you dinner.””

Emily shook her head.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“What did I say?””

“You gave me dinner.””

“And why didn't you eat?””

“I wasn't hungry.””

“Good.””

I shut my eyes.

My knees nearly gave out.

Then another voice came from the recording.

Caleb.

He was off camera.

“Mom, stop.””

Vanessa turned.

“You want to lose dinner too?””

The video ended.

I looked at her.

“You threatened both children.””

“They needed structure.””

“That's what you call this?””

“You were never here!””

Her shout echoed through the basement.

There it was.

The anger beneath everything.

“You worked late. You traveled. You left me handling two kids while you played hero at the office.””

“So you punished Emily?””

“I tried to make her listen!””

“She is six!””

“And she knows exactly how to manipulate you!””

I stared at the woman I'd married.

I barely recognized her.

Then Patricia said quietly, “Tell him why you saved the videos.””

Vanessa's face changed.

I turned.

“What?””

Patricia looked at me.

“She didn't record them by accident.””

“Mom.””

“She showed me one because she was proud Emily was finally ‘learning.’”

Vanessa rushed toward her.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

Patricia backed away.

“I know what you told me.””

“What did she tell you?””

Patricia's voice broke.

“She said eventually Emily would ask to live somewhere else.””

I felt the room tilt.

“Why would Vanessa want that?””

Patricia looked at her daughter.

May you like

Then at me.

“Because Emily wasn't supposed to stay part of the family.””
