Chapter 2: What Emily Whispered

Vanessa's fingers closed around my wrist.

“Give me the phone.””

I stared at her hand.

“Let go.””

“Daniel, you're overreacting.””

“Let. Go.””

She released me.

Caleb had stopped eating completely.

Emily remained in my arms, her face buried against my shoulder.

I unlocked my phone.

Vanessa's voice softened immediately.

“Okay. Fine. We're all emotional. Let's sit down and talk like adults.””

“Emily hasn't eaten.””

“I'll make her something.””

“No.””

That single word silenced her.

I carried Emily to the table and pulled out the chair beside Caleb.

“Stay here with him.””

Emily clung to me.

“Daddy, don't go.””

“I'm not leaving.””

“You promise?””

The fear behind that question hit harder than anything Vanessa had said.

“I promise.””

Caleb quietly pushed his plate toward Emily.

“You can have mine.””

Emily stared at him.

Vanessa snapped, “Caleb, don't.””

He pushed it farther.

“I'm not hungry anymore.””

For the first time that night, I saw the truth wasn't as simple as Vanessa favoring her biological son.

Caleb looked ashamed.

And scared.

I opened a cabinet, found crackers and peanut butter, then filled a glass with water from the tap.

Emily ate quickly.

Too quickly.

“Slow down, sweetheart.””

She nodded.

Vanessa stood by the counter.

“This is ridiculous.””

I turned on my phone's camera.

“What are you doing?””

“Documenting.””

Her face changed.

I filmed the refrigerator lock.

The discarded plate.

Emily's empty place.

Then I photographed the key still sitting on the counter.

Vanessa stepped toward me.

“You're making me look like some kind of monster.””

“I haven't said what you look like.””

“You know exactly what you're doing.””

“Do I?””

She folded her arms.

“You're angry because you're tired. Tomorrow you'll realize Emily manipulated this situation.””

A chair scraped.

Caleb stood.

“She didn't.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Sit down.””

“No.””

I'd never heard Caleb challenge his mother.

Neither, apparently, had Vanessa.

His face was pale, but he remained standing.

“She doesn't lie about it.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“Go upstairs.””

Caleb looked at me instead.

“Daniel…”

His voice cracked.

“There are rules when you're gone.””

My stomach sank again.

“What rules?””

“Caleb!”” Vanessa shouted.

Emily dropped her cracker.

I stepped between Vanessa and the children.

“Lower your voice.””

“This is my son.””

“And Emily is my daughter.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You've always treated them differently.””

I stared at her.

“That is not what we're discussing.””

“You spoil Emily because you feel guilty her mother died.””

The words landed like a slap.

Emily's mother, Rachel, had died when Emily was two.

For four years I'd carried the quiet fear that no matter how much I loved my daughter, I could never replace what she'd lost.

Vanessa knew that.

She had just used it as a weapon.

“Don't mention Rachel.””

“Why? Because it's true?””

Caleb suddenly said, “Mom, stop.””

Vanessa whirled around.

“You are going upstairs right now.””

He didn't move.

I crouched beside him.

“What rules?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“When you're working late, Emily has to finish chores before dinner.””

“What chores?””

“Kitchen. Laundry sometimes. My room.””

Emily whispered, “And the bathroom.””

I looked at her.

“You clean the bathroom?””

She nodded.

“She makes me scrub the tub.””

Six years old.

I felt sick.

Vanessa threw her hands up.

“Oh my God. She's rinsed a bathtub twice. You're making it sound like forced labor.””

“Why is Caleb eating while she cleans?””

“Because Caleb does his chores earlier.””

“No, I don't,” Caleb said.

Vanessa went silent.

He swallowed.

“You tell her mine are already done.””

I looked at him.

“Are they?””

He shook his head.

Vanessa walked toward the doorway.

“I'm done with this interrogation.””

“Where are you going?””

“To cool down before you say something you'll regret.””

“No.””

She stopped.

I surprised myself with how calm my voice sounded.

“You're staying until I understand what has been happening in my house.””

“Your house?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I live here too.””

“Then explain why my daughter is afraid to open the refrigerator.””

Nothing.

“Explain why she thought I'd call her bad if she told me.””

Nothing.

“And explain what she just whispered to me.””

Vanessa's confidence disappeared.

Caleb looked between us.

“What did she say?””

Emily began crying again.

I knelt beside her.

“You don't have to repeat it.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Daniel, kids misunderstand things.””

“She said you told her if she told me about missing dinner, I'd send her away because I wanted a new family.””

Caleb's mouth fell open.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never said that.””

Emily looked up.

“Yes, you did.””

“No, Emily.””

“You said Daddy has you and Caleb now.””

“Stop lying.””

“You said Mommy was gone and Daddy could get another little girl.””

I saw Caleb cover his mouth.

I couldn't breathe properly.

Vanessa pointed at Emily.

“She twists everything!””

I stepped in front of my daughter.

“Don't point at her.””

“You're letting a child destroy our marriage.””

“No.””

My voice broke despite my effort to control it.

“You did that yourself.””

Vanessa stared at me.

Then something unexpected happened.

Caleb walked around the table.

He stood beside Emily.

And he said, “There's something else.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“Caleb.””

He ignored her.

“When Emily gets really hungry…”

His eyes met mine.

“…Mom makes her do something so you won't notice.””

“What?””

Caleb started crying.

Vanessa rushed toward him.

I blocked her.

“What does she make Emily do?””

Caleb wiped his face.

“She makes her drink a bunch of water before you come home.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“So her stomach feels full.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Then Caleb whispered four words that changed the entire night.

“I have proof upstairs.””
