Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Door
"Pour red wine on her dress, lose the rings, and make sure she cries in front of everyone.""
I stopped breathing.
The voice belonged to Vanessa Reed, my maid of honor, my best friend of fifteen years, and the woman who had stood beside me through every heartbreak, every disappointment, and every major moment of my life.
Apparently, she was about to become the reason I would never trust another person so easily again.
It was 1:43 a.m. in a historic hotel in Charleston, South Carolina. My wedding was thirteen hours away. Outside my window, the city was quiet, the streets glistening after an evening rain.
Inside my bridal suite, my wedding dress hung beside the window.
I had spent eleven months planning that wedding.
One hundred and eighty guests. White roses. A string quartet. A beautiful outdoor ceremony beneath the oak trees at Magnolia Plantation.
And Daniel Carter.
The man I had loved for four years.
I had no idea that the woman I trusted most was planning to take him from me.
The voices came through the connecting door between my suite and Vanessa's room.
"Vanessa, this is getting ridiculous," another woman whispered.
"You're actually going to ruin her wedding?""
It was Jessica, one of my bridesmaids.
Vanessa laughed.
"Ruin it? I'm saving Daniel from making the biggest mistake of his life.""
My fingers tightened around my phone.
"He's marrying Emily tomorrow," Jessica reminded her.
"Exactly. Tomorrow. That's why we don't have much time.""
A glass clinked against something.
Then Vanessa said the words that made my stomach turn.
"I've been trying to get Daniel for months. He nearly chose me instead.""
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
Daniel and Vanessa had known each other for years, but I had never suspected anything inappropriate. In fact, Vanessa had been the first person I called when Daniel proposed.
She had screamed, hugged me, and cried harder than I did.
Now I understood why she had insisted on being involved in every wedding decision.
"What's the plan?"" Jessica asked.
Vanessa answered as casually as if she were discussing the breakfast menu.
"First, the dress. I'll bring red wine into the preparation room. Everyone knows I'm clumsy. I'll spill it, apologize, and make a big scene.""
"And the rings?""
"I have them. I'll say I misplaced the box. Emily will panic, the ceremony will get delayed, and everyone will start whispering.""
Jessica sounded uncomfortable.
"That's cruel.""
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"Do you want to be my friend or hers?""
Silence.
Then Jessica whispered, "What about Daniel?""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Once Emily runs out crying, Daniel will finally realize he should've married me.""
I felt something inside me break.
Not because I suddenly feared losing Daniel.
Because I realized fifteen years of friendship had meant nothing to the woman standing ten feet away.
I opened my phone.
The voice recorder was already running.
For four minutes and eleven seconds, I captured everything.
Vanessa explained when she would spill the wine, how she would pretend to lose the rings, and how she intended to create enough confusion to separate Daniel from me before the ceremony.
Then she said something even worse.
"There's another surprise. I've already sent Daniel something that should make him question Emily.""
My heart skipped.
"What did you send him?"" Jessica asked.
"Something from her past. Let's just say tomorrow won't be the happy little fairy tale she expects.""
I leaned closer to the door.
"Does he believe it?""
"He hasn't answered yet. But he will.""
I stopped the recording only after their conversation shifted to something unrelated.
Then I sat on the edge of my bed.
My wedding dress reflected the soft yellow light of the bedside lamp. The veil was folded carefully over a chair. My bouquet was scheduled to arrive at seven.
Everything looked perfect.
Everything was a lie.
At 2:13 a.m., I messaged my brother Michael.
*Emily:* I need you. Something terrible is happening. Don't call. Just read this.
I sent him the recording.
His reply came less than a minute later.
*Michael:* Stay in your room. Don't confront her. I'm coming upstairs.
I contacted Sarah, my cousin and wedding planner.
Then I called the hotel manager and requested an emergency room change.
By 2:30 a.m., Sarah had secured another bridal suite on the opposite side of the hotel.
Michael arranged to retrieve the wedding rings from Vanessa before breakfast.
Finally, I messaged Daniel.
*Emily:* Something happened tonight. I need to change a few things about tomorrow. Please trust me.
His response arrived immediately.
*Daniel:* Always. Whatever happens, we're facing it together.
I stared at his message for a long time.
Then another notification appeared.
It was from an unknown number.
*Unknown:* Emily, you need to know what Vanessa has been telling Daniel about you. There's something she hasn't told you.
I sat upright.
Before I could respond, another message arrived.
*Unknown:* Ask your fiancé what happened three years ago. Ask him why Vanessa has photographs.
My hands went cold.
Three years ago.
May you like
That was the year my younger brother, Ethan, died.
And suddenly, I wondered whether Vanessa's plan involved something much darker than stealing my groom.
