Chapter 6

Grant surrendered the next morning.
Not dramatically.
No chase.
No secret hotel.
He walked into the district attorney’s office with an attorney and three hard drives.
Daniel almost hated that.
He had imagined confronting the man.
Demanding explanations.
Maybe shouting.
Instead Grant arrived in a navy suit and asked for immunity consideration.
Sarah sat in the conference room when prosecutors played his statement.
Daniel sat beside her.
Grant looked older than Daniel remembered.
Three years earlier he had seemed confident.
Smooth.
Professional.
Now he looked tired.
“I was hired by Vanessa Mills before she became Vanessa Carter.”
The prosecutor asked, “For what purpose?”
“To gather information about Sarah Carter.”
“When?”
“Approximately fourteen months before the Carter divorce filing.”
Sarah’s fingers tightened around a tissue.
Daniel looked at her.
She did not look back.
Grant continued.
“Initially, I believed Vanessa suspected Sarah was having an affair.”
“On whose behalf?”
“Vanessa claimed Daniel had privately asked her to help.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I never did.”
Grant nodded.
“I know that now.”
The prosecutor continued.
“When did your work become illegal?”
Grant took a breath.
“When Vanessa asked me to manufacture evidence.”
“What kind?”
“Messages.”
“Photographs.”
“Audio excerpts.”
“Video edits.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Grant explained the video.
During a stressful period, Sarah had been secretly recorded in her own kitchen.
She was crying.
Angry.
She slammed a cabinet.
She said, “I can’t do this anymore.”
The custody evaluator later saw a shortened clip.
Vanessa had claimed Sarah was talking about motherhood.
In the full video, Sarah’s next words were—
“I can’t keep fighting with Daniel every night.”
The edit removed that.
Another section showed Sarah saying—
“Sometimes I want to just get in the car and disappear.”
The court saw that sentence.
But not what followed.
“For one hour. Just one hour without anyone accusing me of something.”
Sarah’s face collapsed.
Daniel covered his mouth.
Those clips had terrified him.
He remembered showing them to his attorney.
He remembered saying Sarah might take the children.
Grant continued.
“Vanessa repeatedly told me Daniel was emotionally reactive regarding betrayal.”
The prosecutor asked, “What did that mean to you?”
“She believed jealousy would make him ignore inconsistencies.”
Daniel looked down.
Grant was right.
That was exactly what happened.
“Why are you cooperating now?”
Grant hesitated.
“Because what happened to Ellie crossed a line.”
Sarah laughed bitterly.
Grant flinched.
She leaned forward.
“That crossed a line?”
Her voice shook.
“Destroying a mother’s relationship with her children didn’t?”
Grant looked down.
“No.”
“Helping somebody steal my phone didn’t?”
“No.”
“Editing me into some unstable monster didn’t?”
“I’m sorry.”
Sarah stood.
The prosecutor started to intervene.
Sarah raised a hand.
“I’m not going to touch him.”
She looked at Grant.
“I just want him to look at me.”
Grant slowly lifted his eyes.
Sarah’s voice cracked.
“You watched me lose my children.”
“Yes.”
“You knew the evidence was fake.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Grant swallowed.
“Money.”
Sarah stared.
That was all.
Not passion.
Not revenge.
Money.
She sat down.
Daniel looked at Grant.
“How much?”
Grant answered.
“Over three years?”
“Yes.”
“About two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”
Daniel felt sick.
“From where?”
Grant looked toward prosecutors.
“Vanessa paid through several accounts.”
“What accounts?”
“Some were hers.”
“And the others?”
Grant hesitated.
“Accounts connected to the Carter Children’s Trust.”
Daniel stood.
“What?”
Sarah turned sharply.
Grant continued.
“I didn’t know the source at first.”
Daniel moved closer to the screen.
“My children’s trust?”
“Yes.”
“You took money from my children to help her hurt their mother?”
Grant’s attorney intervened.
“My client is cooperating—”
Daniel slammed his palm against the table.
“Answer me.”
Grant looked directly at him.
“Yes.”
Daniel walked away before he did something stupid.
The prosecutor paused the interview.
Sarah followed Daniel into the hallway.
He stood near a window.
“They have education accounts.”
“I know.”
“My father funded them.”
“I know.”
“She stole from them.”
Sarah crossed her arms.
“Apparently.”
“How did I miss that?”
“You delegated everything.”
He turned.
“Vanessa handled household finances.”
Sarah gave him a long look.
Daniel understood.
Another thing he had handed her.
Another door he had opened.
His phone rang.
His mother.
Catherine Carter.
Daniel had ignored six calls from her since the story broke.
He answered.
“Mom.”
Catherine did not say hello.
“I just saw the news.”
“Which part?”
“Something about the children’s trust.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“How do you know that?”
“The board’s attorney called me.”
Catherine was trustee of several family accounts.
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“Mom, did Vanessa have access?”
“No.”
Catherine paused.
“She had my authorization codes.”
Daniel stared at the wall.
“What?”
“She helped me when I was traveling.”
“You gave her codes?”
“I trusted your wife.”
Daniel laughed without humor.
“So did I.”
Catherine became defensive.
“She said she was transferring tuition payments.”
“Did you verify them?”
Silence.
“Mom.”
“No.”
Daniel shut his eyes.
“I need you to speak to the investigators.”
“Daniel, this could become a family scandal.”
He opened his eyes.
“My daughter was locked in a refrigerator.”
“I understand that.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Do not lecture me.”
“Then stop talking about scandal.”
Sarah looked at him.
Daniel continued.
“If Vanessa stole from the children and you accidentally helped her, you tell the police everything.”
Catherine’s voice became cold.
“You’re forgetting who built the company that funds your lifestyle.”
Daniel looked out the window.
“No.”
He spoke quietly.
“I’m remembering exactly what matters.”
Then he ended the call.
Sarah raised an eyebrow.
“That’s new.”
“What?”
“You hanging up on your mother.”
“I’m having a week of personal growth.”
Sarah almost smiled.
Almost.
The trust records made the case larger.
Vanessa had moved more than four hundred thousand dollars over two years.
Some payments went to Grant.
Some to private investigators.
Some to public-relations consultants.
One account paid for a condo Daniel had never seen.
That condo was registered to Lorraine.
Lorraine denied knowing it existed.
Vanessa had used her mother’s name.
By afternoon, prosecutors added fraud and identity-related allegations to the expanding investigation.
Vanessa’s attorney attacked everything.
He claimed Grant was lying to save himself.
He claimed Lorraine was confused.
He claimed Daniel and Sarah were rebuilding an alliance to destroy Vanessa.
Then Catherine arrived.
She walked into Sarah’s apartment as if she still belonged there.
Sarah opened the door.
Her face hardened immediately.
“Catherine.”
Catherine looked uncomfortable.
“Sarah.”
Daniel came from the kitchen.
“Mom.”
Catherine held a folder.
“I brought the trust statements.”
“You should give them to Reyes.”
“I already made copies.”
She looked around.
Ellie sat on the floor coloring.
Noah was on the sofa.
Catherine’s eyes filled when she saw them.
“Can I hug my grandchildren?”
Noah looked at Sarah.
That small movement did not escape Catherine.
Sarah crouched beside Ellie.
“You decide.”
Ellie looked at Catherine.
Then nodded.
Catherine hugged her carefully.
Noah stayed on the sofa.
Catherine approached him.
He did not move.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
“Hi.”
“Can I hug you?”
“No.”
Catherine froze.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
Daniel watched.
Months earlier, his mother would have been offended.
Today she sat in a chair across from Noah.
“I owe you an apology.”
Noah looked suspicious.
“For what?”
“For believing adults before I listened to you.”
Daniel felt the words hit him too.
Catherine continued.
“You told me last summer you didn’t like being alone with Vanessa.”
Noah nodded.
“I said you were being disrespectful.”
“Yes.”
“I was wrong.”
Noah stared at her.
Catherine’s voice shook.
“I’m sorry.”
Noah looked down.
“Okay.”
Not forgiveness.
Not rejection.
Just acknowledgment.
It was more than Daniel expected.
Later, Catherine handed Sarah a second envelope.
“This belongs to you.”
Sarah frowned.
“What is it?”
“Something Vanessa gave me during the divorce.”
Daniel looked over.
Sarah opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Her own signature appeared at the bottom.
She read.
Her face changed.
“I never wrote this.”
Catherine closed her eyes.
“I know that now.”
Daniel reached for it.
The letter supposedly came from Sarah.
It told Catherine she wanted nothing to do with the Carter family.
It accused her of ruining the marriage.
It asked her never to contact Sarah again.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“You believed this?”
“Yes.”
“Did you call Sarah?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I was furious.”
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Catherine looked at her.
“I am sorry.”
Sarah put the letter down.
“Everyone was furious.”
Nobody spoke.
Sarah looked around the room.
“That was Vanessa’s greatest talent.”
She pointed at the fake letter.
“She didn’t just lie.”
“She made everyone too angry to ask questions.”
Catherine lowered her head.
A knock came at the door.
Maya checked the peephole.
Then froze.
“Daniel.”
He moved over.
A woman stood outside.
Mid-thirties.
Dark hair.
Nervous expression.
Daniel did not recognize her.
Sarah did.
“Ava?”
The woman looked toward the peephole as if she could hear.
Sarah opened the door.
Ava immediately started crying.
“I’m sorry.”
Sarah stared.
“What are you doing here?”
Ava looked past her.
“Is Vanessa here?”
“No.”
Ava exhaled.
“I saw the news.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who are you?”
Sarah answered.
“She was our nanny.”
Daniel remembered.
Before Maya.
Before the divorce.
Ava had worked for them six months.
Then abruptly quit.
Vanessa had said Ava was unreliable.
Daniel frowned.
“I thought you moved.”
Ava shook her head.
“No.”
“Vanessa told us you left the state.”
Ava looked frightened.
“She told me if I ever contacted your family again, she’d make sure I lost every childcare job I ever had.”
Maya stared at her.
“Why?”
Ava reached into her purse.
She removed an old phone.
“Because I saw her take Sarah’s tablet.”
Nobody breathed.
May you like
Ava’s hand shook.
“And I recorded her doing it.”
