Chapter 5

Lorraine gave police the storage-unit address before noon.

She cried while doing it.

Vanessa had paid the bill under Lorraine’s name for nearly three years.

The unit sat behind a row of warehouses forty minutes outside the city.

Detective Reyes obtained a warrant.

Daniel was not allowed inside during the search.

Neither was Sarah.

They waited at the station.

Across the room.

Separate chairs.

Separate lives.

Connected by the same terrible truth.

Sarah stared at the clock.

“Three years.”

Daniel looked over.

“What?”

“That phone has been sitting somewhere for three years.”

He said nothing.

“If someone had found it then…”

Her voice faded.

Daniel knew the rest.

The custody case might have changed.

Their marriage might have changed.

Their children’s lives certainly would have changed.

“I’m sorry.”

Sarah shook her head.

“I know.”

He looked surprised.

She gave him a tired expression.

“I’m not saying I forgive you.”

“I know.”

“I’m saying I know you’re sorry.”

“That’s fair.”

Sarah leaned back.

“Vanessa understood both of us.”

Daniel frowned.

“She understood you would react when you felt betrayed.”

Sarah looked at him.

“And she understood I would react when I felt falsely accused.”

Daniel thought about it.

“She kept us angry.”

“Exactly.”

“So neither of us looked closely.”

Sarah nodded.

“She made every conversation a fight.”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“She used our worst instincts.”

“No.”

Sarah corrected him quietly.

“She used our wounds.”

The station door opened.

Detective Reyes entered carrying an evidence bag.

Inside was a black phone.

Sarah stood.

“That’s mine.”

Reyes placed it on the table.

“You recognize it?”

“There’s a scratch near the camera.”

He turned the bag.

A small diagonal scratch crossed the corner.

Sarah covered her mouth.

“That’s it.”

Reyes nodded.

“Forensics will examine it.”

“How long?”

“As quickly as possible.”

Daniel asked, “Was there anything else?”

Reyes looked at him.

“Yes.”

His expression made Daniel’s stomach tighten.

“What?”

“A laptop.”

“Whose?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“Anything on it?”

“It was powered down.”

Reyes paused.

“And several folders containing photographs of your family.”

Sarah’s eyes narrowed.

“What kind of photographs?”

“Surveillance.”

Daniel stood.

“Of the children?”

“Yes.”

“Taken when?”

“Over approximately two years.”

Sarah’s face hardened.

“Grant.”

“We’re trying to determine that.”

“Where is he?”

“We still don’t know.”

Daniel remembered the anonymous call.

“He contacted me because he wanted us to find this.”

Reyes nodded.

“Which means he may be trying to cooperate.”

“Or protect himself,” Sarah said.

Reyes gave her a brief look.

“Also possible.”

That afternoon, Vanessa was released on bail.

Daniel learned from a news alert.

Someone had already leaked the story.

WEALTHY EXECUTIVE’S WIFE ARRESTED AFTER CHILD FOUND IN REFRIGERATOR.

Daniel hated the headline.

It turned Ellie into spectacle.

Within hours, reporters waited outside his house.

Vanessa released a statement through her attorney.

It said she loved both children deeply.

It called the incident “a brief disciplinary misjudgment.”

It accused unnamed individuals of exploiting a painful family situation.

Then came the line Sarah predicted.

“Mrs. Carter is concerned that manipulated recordings and unresolved custody conflicts may be creating a misleading public narrative.”

Daniel read it twice.

“She’s blaming Sarah.”

Maya sat across from him in Sarah’s apartment.

“She’s blaming everyone.”

Daniel put down his phone.

“I’m going to respond.”

Sarah said, “No.”

He looked at her.

“She is accusing you.”

“I know.”

“She’s dragging you into the press.”

“I know.”

“Then why shouldn’t I say something?”

“Because she wants you angry.”

Daniel opened his mouth.

Sarah raised a hand.

“You spent years reacting.”

He stopped.

“Try something different.”

Daniel hated that she was right.

Maya’s phone buzzed.

She looked down.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Maya turned the screen toward them.

An article had appeared on a gossip site.

NANNY AT CENTER OF CARTER FAMILY SCANDAL PREVIOUSLY FIRED FROM CHILDCARE JOB.

Daniel stared.

“What is this?”

Maya went pale.

Sarah read quickly.

The article claimed Maya had been terminated by another family after allegations she stole jewelry.

Daniel looked at her.

“Maya?”

“It’s not true.”

Her voice shook.

“I was never fired for stealing.”

“Where did this come from?”

“I know exactly where.”

She sat down.

“Vanessa.”

Sarah frowned.

Maya looked at Daniel.

“Three months ago, she asked about every family I had worked for.”

“Why?”

“She said she was reviewing household security.”

Maya rubbed her forehead.

“My previous employer was Mrs. Patterson.”

Daniel recognized the name.

“Senator Patterson’s family?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Their daughter graduated and they moved to Washington. My contract ended.”

“So no theft?”

“No.”

Sarah was already searching her phone.

“We call them.”

Maya shook her head.

“I haven’t spoken to them in two years.”

“Then today is a good day.”

Twenty minutes later, Elaine Patterson was on speakerphone.

Her voice was furious.

“That article is completely false.”

Maya began crying.

“Mrs. Patterson—”

“You were never accused of stealing from us.”

Daniel looked at Sarah.

Elaine continued.

“You worked with our family for four years.”

“I know.”

“We trusted you with our children and our home.”

“Thank you.”

“Who published this?”

Daniel answered.

“We’re trying to find out.”

Elaine’s voice sharpened.

“If somebody is using my family to attack Maya, they’re going to have a problem.”

Within an hour, Elaine issued a public statement.

The website quietly changed the article.

But the damage was clear.

Vanessa was fighting.

Not in court yet.

Everywhere else.

She wanted doubt.

Maya became suspect.

Sarah became bitter ex-wife.

Noah became manipulative child.

Daniel became confused husband.

And Vanessa became the misunderstood woman surrounded by enemies.

Exactly the pattern Sarah had warned him about.

That evening, child protective services interviewed Noah and Ellie separately.

Daniel stayed away from the room.

Sarah stayed away too.

Maya was not allowed inside.

The children spoke with specialists.

When Ellie came out, she was crying.

Sarah hugged her.

“Did I do good?”

“You did perfect.”

“Was I supposed to say I still love Vanessa?”

Sarah froze.

Daniel looked over.

Ellie’s face crumpled.

“Because sometimes I do.”

Sarah knelt.

“That’s okay.”

Ellie stared at her.

“It is?”

“Yes.”

“But she was mean.”

“You can love someone and still know they hurt you.”

Ellie began crying harder.

“I don’t want her to go to jail forever.”

“You don’t have to decide that.”

“Will Daddy be mad?”

Daniel crouched beside her.

“No.”

“I miss when she made pancakes.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

“And I hate the refrigerator.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I understand that too.”

Ellie looked between her parents.

“So I’m not bad?”

Sarah hugged her.

“No.”

Daniel placed a hand gently on her back.

“No, sweetheart.”

For the first time in years, they comforted their daughter together.

Not as husband and wife.

Not as enemies.

As parents.

No battle.

No lawyer.

No Vanessa between them.

Noah watched from the hallway.

Something in his face softened.

Then Sarah’s phone rang.

Detective Reyes.

She answered.

“Hello?”

She listened.

Her expression changed.

“What did you find?”

Everyone went still.

Sarah put the call on speaker.

Reyes spoke.

“Forensics accessed the recovered phone.”

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

“And?”

“The messages used in your divorce case were not sent from that device.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Reyes continued.

“Not only that. We recovered an old cloud-sync log showing a second device accessed your account during the period when those screenshots were created.”

Daniel whispered, “Can you identify it?”

“We have a device identifier.”

“Whose?”

“We’re still confirming ownership.”

Sarah opened her eyes.

Reyes paused.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“The recovered phone contains deleted voice notes.”

Sarah frowned.

“I don’t remember recording anything.”

“These weren’t recorded by you.”

Daniel felt cold.

Reyes continued.

“They were created while the phone appears to have been hidden in a room.”

Sarah’s face tightened.

“And?”

“One contains Vanessa speaking with Grant.”

Daniel stood.

Reyes’s voice became quieter.

“You both need to hear it.”

An hour later, the recording played.

Vanessa’s voice came first.

“Sarah keeps saying Daniel will figure it out.”

Grant laughed.

“He won’t.”

“You’re sure?”

“He wants to believe her.”

“Then why won’t he?”

Grant answered.

“Because you gave him something stronger than love.”

Vanessa asked, “What?”

“Humiliation.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa laughed.

Grant continued.

“A man who believes his wife betrayed him doesn’t investigate like a detective.”

“He investigates like a husband.”

Vanessa said, “Good.”

Grant asked, “And when you marry him?”

Vanessa did not answer immediately.

Then she said—

“I make sure her children forget she ever existed.”

Sarah walked out of the room.

Daniel stayed frozen in his chair.

Noah stood near the doorway.

He had heard enough.

“Dad?”

Daniel turned.

Noah’s eyes were wet.

“Did Vanessa marry you because she hated Mom?”

Daniel did not know what to say.

Maya stepped toward Noah.

But Daniel shook his head gently.

He needed to answer.

“I think Vanessa wanted a life that belonged to your mother.”

Noah looked confused.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you love Vanessa?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.”

Noah flinched.

Daniel continued.

“That doesn’t mean what she did was okay.”

“How could you love somebody like that?”

The question was innocent.

And devastating.

Daniel looked at his son.

“Because I didn’t know who she really was.”

Noah’s face tightened.

“But we did.”

Daniel could barely breathe.

“Yes.”

Noah wiped his eyes.

“And you didn’t believe us.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I didn’t.”

Noah walked away.

Daniel did not stop him.

Sarah returned several minutes later.

Her eyes were red.

“He had to ask you.”

“I know.”

“You answered correctly.”

“It didn’t feel correct.”

“It wasn’t supposed to.”

Daniel looked at her.

Sarah sat down.

“For once, he got the truth without somebody protecting your feelings.”

Daniel nodded.

Then Maya’s phone rang again.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

“Hello?”

A man spoke.

“Maya Ortiz?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Grant Hollis.”

Everyone froze.

Maya put the phone on speaker.

Grant continued.

“I need to speak to Daniel and Sarah.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“This is Daniel.”

A pause.

Then Grant said, “Vanessa knows police found the phone.”

“How?”

“She still has people watching.”

“Who?”

“I’ll tell you.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

“Why not now?”

“Because I need protection.”

Sarah’s expression hardened.

Grant continued.

“And because Vanessa has something else.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What?”

Grant took a breath.

“A video.”

“Of what?”

“Of Sarah.”

Sarah went pale.

Grant continued.

“A video that was used to convince your custody evaluator she was unstable.”

Sarah stood.

“That video was real.”

“No.”

Grant’s voice dropped.

“It was edited.”

Daniel stared at Sarah.

May you like

Grant finished.

“And I’m the man who edited it.”
