Chapter 9

By eight the next morning, every major news network was outside Cole Industries.

Nathan did not use the company auditorium.

He refused.

Instead, he stood on the front steps.

No corporate logo behind him.

No lawyers beside him.

No prepared stage.

Grace stood several feet away with Lily.

Daniel wanted Lily hidden from cameras.

Grace agreed.

Nathan agreed.

Lily stayed inside the lobby with a child advocate and Detective Reyes.

But Grace chose to stand where the world could see her.

Her arm remained in a sling.

Bruises marked her face.

Nathan looked at the cameras.

Then began.

“My name is Nathan Cole.”

Flashes exploded.

“Yesterday, I learned that I have a four-year-old daughter.”

Reporters shouted.

Nathan raised his hand.

“I also learned that my father knew about her before she was born.”

The crowd quieted.

“He concealed that truth from me.”

Nathan swallowed.

“He threatened her mother.”

Grace looked down.

“He falsified evidence.”

More flashes.

“And he participated in a private agreement designed to protect family control of Cole Industries by preventing my daughter from being recognized as my legal heir.”

The reporters exploded again.

Nathan continued.

“This morning, I am releasing evidence of that conduct to federal authorities.”

Malcolm Vale watched from a television inside his Manhattan townhouse.

Victoria stood behind him.

Her face was pale.

Onscreen, Nathan held up Richard’s signed confession.

Malcolm whispered, “Idiot.”

Victoria looked at him.

“He’s going to release it.”

“Yes.”

“What do we do?”

Malcolm didn’t answer.

Nathan’s press conference continued.

“My father eventually attempted to reverse what he had done.”

Nathan looked directly into the cameras.

“But regret does not erase harm.”

Grace lifted her eyes.

Nathan continued.

“I spent my life protecting the Cole name.”

His voice became stronger.

“Today, I am done protecting it.”

The crowd went silent.

Nathan announced the transfer of his special voting rights.

The suspension of the Vale merger.

An independent investigation.

Compensation funds for employees if the scandal damaged pensions.

And finally—

“My resignation as chief executive is effective immediately.”

The reporters shouted louder than before.

Grace stared at him.

Nathan had told her.

But hearing it publicly was different.

This was the center of his life.

He was walking away.

A reporter screamed, “Mr. Cole, are you admitting criminal liability?”

“No.”

“Did you know your father was watching Grace Bennett?”

“No.”

“Why should anyone believe you?”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“They shouldn’t.”

The answer stunned everyone.

Nathan continued.

“They should believe documents.”

He pointed toward Daniel.

“Every record will be independently authenticated.”

Another reporter shouted.

“Did Ms. Bennett extort you?”

“No.”

“Did she enter your home under false pretenses?”

Nathan paused.

“Yes.”

Grace stiffened.

Reporters erupted.

Nathan continued.

“She took a job in my home without telling me she was the mother of my child.”

Grace stared at him.

“Because she had spent five years being threatened by my family.”

The noise stopped.

Nathan continued.

“If someone threatened your child, your mother, your brother, and your freedom, ask yourself how quickly you would trust the son of the man who did it.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

A reporter shouted.

“Are you and Ms. Bennett romantically involved?”

Nathan almost laughed.

“No.”

Grace looked at him.

Nathan answered carefully.

“Grace owes me nothing.”

The sentence hit her harder than she expected.

“She does not owe me forgiveness.”

Nathan continued.

“She does not owe me a relationship.”

He looked toward the lobby where Lily stood unseen.

“The only thing I am asking for is the chance to become the father my daughter should have had from the beginning.”

Grace looked away quickly.

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

Then Detective Reyes came through the lobby doors.

She walked directly toward Daniel.

Whispered something.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Nathan noticed.

He ended the press conference.

“What happened?”

Reyes showed him her phone.

“Finch confessed.”

Nathan stared.

“To everything?”

“Evidence planting.”

“Victoria?”

“He says orders came through Vale security.”

“Malcolm?”

“Indirectly.”

Nathan exhaled.

“Grace’s charges?”

“Prosecutor is dismissing them.”

Grace closed her eyes.

Five years of fear.

One night of public humiliation.

And finally, the word she had waited for.

Dismissed.

Nathan looked at her.

“You’re free.”

Grace shook her head.

“Not until Lily is safe forever.”

He nodded.

“Then we keep going.”

The custody hearing began that afternoon.

The courtroom was sealed to protect Lily.

Nathan sat beside Daniel.

Grace sat with her own attorney.

Victoria sat across the room.

Malcolm did not appear.

His attorneys did.

The court-certified DNA test was entered.

99.9998 percent probability.

Nathan Cole was legally declared Lily’s biological father.

Nathan’s hands shook when the judge said it.

Not because it was surprising.

Because it was official.

Permanent.

Real.

The judge dismissed Victoria’s guardianship claim as fraudulent.

Grace’s custody was fully restored.

Nathan was granted temporary supervised parenting time until a permanent plan could be created.

He didn’t object.

He didn’t ask for more.

Grace noticed.

Victoria’s attorney stood.

“We request immediate review.”

The judge glared at him.

“Your client submitted a forged birth certificate claiming to be the child’s maternal aunt.”

The attorney sat down.

Victoria stared at Nathan.

Hatred burned in her eyes.

Outside the courtroom, she approached him.

“You think you won.”

Nathan stepped between her and Grace.

“No.”

Victoria laughed.

“You destroyed your own company.”

“I gave up control.”

“You humiliated your father.”

“He earned it.”

“You made yourself weak.”

Nathan looked toward Lily.

The child was drawing beside her advocate.

“No.”

His voice softened.

“I finally found the one thing stronger than the company.”

Victoria’s face twisted.

“That little girl cost me everything.”

Grace stepped forward.

“No.”

Victoria looked at her.

“Your choices cost you everything.”

For once, Victoria had no answer.

Two federal agents entered the hallway.

They approached her.

“Victoria Vale?”

Her face drained of color.

“You are under arrest for conspiracy, evidence tampering, fraudulent custodial interference, and obstruction of justice.”

Victoria looked toward Nathan.

Then Grace.

Then the agents cuffed her.

For a moment, Grace thought it was over.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

Nathan noticed.

“What?”

Daniel didn’t speak.

“What happened?”

He ended the call.

“Malcolm is gone.”

Reyes turned.

“What do you mean gone?”

“His townhouse is empty.”

“Airport?”

“His passport has been flagged.”

Daniel shook his head.

“He didn’t go to an airport.”

Nathan felt dread.

“Where did he go?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Cole headquarters.”

Nathan stared.

“Why?”

“Security detected someone entering the restricted executive floor ten minutes ago.”

Grace whispered, “Archive 717.”

Nathan was already moving.

They reached Cole headquarters seventeen minutes later.

Police surrounded the building.

Employees had been evacuated.

Smoke drifted from the upper floors.

Nathan stopped.

“No.”

Fire alarms screamed.

Reyes ran toward the command officer.

“What happened?”

“Suppression system was disabled on executive levels.”

Nathan’s face went white.

“He’s burning the archive.”

Daniel cursed.

Grace grabbed Nathan’s sleeve.

“Let it burn.”

Nathan looked at her.

“The evidence.”

“Copies exist.”

“Not all of it.”

Grace shook her head.

“Nathan.”

He stared at the smoke.

His father’s secrets.

The Vale records.

Proof involving dozens of people.

If Malcolm destroyed them, victims might never see justice.

Then Nathan remembered the dead-man release.

“The key.”

Grace touched the chain at her neck.

Daniel understood.

“If the archive is physically destroyed—”

“The release triggers,” Nathan said.

He looked at Grace.

“Unless Malcolm disables it.”

Reyes returned.

“Fire department says no one goes inside.”

Nathan looked up at the smoke.

“Where’s Malcolm?”

“Cameras show him entering Richard’s old office.”

Grace knew that expression.

“No.”

Nathan looked at her.

“He knows how to stop the release.”

“Then let the authorities handle it.”

“They don’t know the system.”

“Nathan.”

“He could destroy everything.”

Grace grabbed his jacket.

“And if you go in, he could destroy you.”

Nathan looked at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then a small voice came from behind them.

“Daddy?”

Nathan turned.

Lily stood beside Daniel’s associate near the police line.

Grace rushed to her.

“What are you doing here?”

“I wanted Daddy.”

Nathan walked over.

He knelt.

Smoke rose behind him.

Lily touched his face.

“Are you leaving?”

The question hit him harder than anything Malcolm could have said.

Nathan looked toward the burning building.

Then back at his daughter.

His father had chosen the company.

Again and again.

Nathan suddenly understood the test.

Not the one in the laboratory.

The one happening now.

He picked Lily up.

“No.”

Grace stared.

Nathan stepped away from the building.

“I’m not leaving you.”

Daniel looked toward the flames.

“What about the archive?”

Nathan took the brass key from Grace.

He studied it.

Then smiled faintly.

“My father planned for this.”

He snapped the key in half.

Grace gasped.

For two seconds, nothing happened.

Then Daniel’s phone vibrated.

Then Reyes’.

Then Nathan’s.

Emails.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

The dead-man release.

Nathan opened the first message.

ARCHIVE 717 DISTRIBUTION ACTIVATED.

Copies had been sent to the Department of Justice.

The Securities and Exchange Commission.

Three newspapers.

Two television networks.

Federal prosecutors.

Nathan stared at the screen.

His father’s empire had just exposed itself.

Grace looked at the broken key.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Nathan held Lily tighter.

“I trusted him to have one good plan.”

Sirens grew louder.

Upstairs, a figure appeared at a window.

Malcolm.

He stared down.

Even from the street, Nathan could see him realize what had happened.

His secrets were gone.

Not destroyed.

Released.

Minutes later, firefighters escorted Malcolm from the building.

His suit was covered in ash.

Federal agents met him outside.

Malcolm saw Nathan holding Lily.

He stopped.

“You destroyed your inheritance.”

Nathan looked at him.

“No.”

Malcolm laughed bitterly.

“You lost control of Cole Industries.”

Nathan kissed the top of Lily’s head.

“I found something better.”

Agents took Malcolm away.

Grace stood beside Nathan.

The building burned behind them.

May you like

The Cole name was collapsing across every screen in America.

And for the first time in his life, Nathan did not turn around to watch.
