Chapter 6

At nine o’clock, fourteen members of the Cole Industries board entered the executive conference room.
At nine oh three, Nathan locked the doors.
At nine oh five, he destroyed his own reputation.
“There is a child.”
Silence.
Nathan stood at the end of the table.
Grace sat behind him beside Daniel.
Her injured arm rested in a sling.
Every person in the room had already seen the morning headlines.
COLE MAID ARRESTED IN KIDNAPPING PLOT.
SECRET CHILD CLAIM SHAKES BILLION-DOLLAR MERGER.
NATHAN COLE TARGET OF EXTORTION SCHEME.
Nathan clicked the screen.
Lily’s photograph appeared.
Four years old.
Brown hair.
Bright eyes.
A pink sweater.
“This is Lily Bennett.”
No one spoke.
“She is my daughter.”
A board member raised his hand.
“Nathan, has that been legally verified?”
Nathan displayed the original test.
“It was verified five years ago.”
Murmurs spread around the table.
He changed the slide.
The falsified test appeared beside it.
“Then concealed.”
Another director stood.
“By whom?”
Nathan looked at him.
“My father.”
The room erupted.
Nathan let them react.
Then he raised his hand.
Silence returned.
“My father, Richard Cole, knowingly suppressed evidence that Grace Bennett was pregnant with my child.”
Grace stared at the table.
Nathan continued.
“He threatened her family. He participated in falsifying a paternity test. He helped force her to disappear.”
One director whispered, “My God.”
“And he did it to protect a private consolidation agreement with Malcolm Vale.”
Nathan displayed the contract.
Now the board understood.
The merger.
The marriage.
The succession clause.
The hidden heir.
People started talking over one another.
Nathan slammed his hand on the table.
“Stop.”
Everyone stopped.
“I am not asking you to forgive my father.”
His voice shook.
“I am not asking you to protect me.”
He looked around the room.
“I am asking you to protect thirty-two thousand employees from what happens next.”
The chief financial officer frowned.
“What happens next?”
“I release enough evidence to law enforcement to stop the Vale merger.”
A director stood.
“You’ll destroy our share price.”
“Yes.”
“You’ll trigger debt covenants.”
“Possibly.”
“The market will think this company is controlled by criminals.”
Nathan looked at him.
“For years, parts of it were.”
No one had an answer.
The CFO said, “What are you proposing?”
Nathan took a breath.
“I resign as chief executive.”
Grace looked up sharply.
Daniel already knew.
The board did not.
Several people shouted.
Nathan continued.
“I also surrender my family’s special voting rights into an independent employee-controlled trust pending investigation.”
The room exploded again.
One director stared at him.
“You’re giving away control of your own company?”
“Yes.”
“You can’t do that.”
“The succession documents allow it.”
Daniel placed copies on the table.
Nathan continued.
“If I keep control, Malcolm Vale can claim this is a family dispute and pressure the board through our personal agreements.”
He looked at every face.
“If I remove myself, this becomes what it should have been from the beginning.”
“What?”
“A criminal investigation.”
The doors opened.
Malcolm Vale walked in.
No invitation.
No apology.
Victoria followed him.
Nathan’s entire body tightened.
Grace stood.
“Where is Lily?”
Victoria’s gaze slid toward her.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“You took her.”
“I received lawful custody.”
“That order was suspended.”
“After she was transferred.”
Nathan moved around the table.
“Transferred where?”
Victoria looked at him.
“Somewhere safe.”
He stopped three feet from her.
“You have ten seconds.”
Malcolm spoke.
“Do not threaten my daughter.”
Nathan looked at him.
“You brought Lily into my house to trap Grace.”
Malcolm smiled.
“Prove it.”
Nathan held up a small recording device.
Malcolm’s expression changed.
“Everything in this room is being recorded for the board record.”
Victoria looked at her father.
Malcolm recovered quickly.
“Good.”
He took a seat.
“Then record this.”
He looked at the directors.
“Nathan Cole is emotionally compromised.”
Nathan almost smiled.
Malcolm continued.
“He has accepted the unsupported claim of a disgruntled employee with a documented history of fraud.”
Grace’s face tightened.
“He now intends to jeopardize tens of thousands of jobs because a four-year-old child called him Daddy.”
Nathan clicked the next slide.
The independent preliminary DNA analysis appeared.
99.9991% probability of paternity.
The room went silent.
Victoria stared.
Malcolm did not move.
Nathan looked at him.
“Unsupported?”
Malcolm’s jaw flexed.
Victoria spoke first.
“A hairbrush sample isn’t court admissible.”
Nathan slowly turned toward her.
Interesting.
She knew exactly what kind of sample had been tested.
Nathan hadn’t told her.
Neither had the press.
Grace noticed too.
“How did you know it came from a hairbrush?” Grace asked.
Victoria froze.
Malcolm stood.
“We’re finished here.”
Nathan blocked his path.
“No.”
He looked at the board.
“Everyone heard that.”
Victoria shook her head.
“I assumed.”
Nathan smiled without humor.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“You knew because someone inside child services told you we didn’t have Lily’s fresh sample.”
Victoria said nothing.
Nathan’s phone buzzed.
A message from Detective Elena Reyes.
He had met her only an hour earlier.
She worked in internal affairs.
Daniel had quietly contacted her after discovering Finch’s name buried in the Vale archive.
Nathan read the message.
FINCH IS COMPROMISED.
PAYMENTS CONFIRMED.
DO NOT LET VALE LEAVE.
Nathan looked up.
Malcolm saw something change.
“What?”
Nathan locked the conference room electronically.
Malcolm stared.
“You’re making a mistake.”
“Probably.”
Nathan walked toward him.
“But it won’t be the mistake you paid Detective Finch to create.”
The room erupted.
Victoria turned toward her father.
“What?”
Malcolm snapped, “Be quiet.”
Nathan held up his phone.
“Finch received three payments totaling four hundred and eighty thousand dollars through a consulting company controlled by Vale Capital.”
Malcolm’s face remained calm.
But Victoria stepped backward.
“You told me the police were handled.”
Every eye turned toward her.
Victoria realized what she had said.
Nathan whispered, “Thank you.”
Her face collapsed.
Malcolm grabbed her arm.
“Not another word.”
Grace stared at Victoria.
“You planted those passports.”
Victoria said nothing.
“The money.”
Nothing.
“The syringe.”
Victoria’s lips trembled.
Nathan watched Malcolm.
Not Victoria.
Because Malcolm was the one calculating.
Still planning.
Still thinking three moves ahead.
Then the fire alarm sounded.
Everyone jumped.
Red lights flashed.
The building’s emergency system announced an evacuation.
Daniel looked at Nathan.
“That’s not scheduled.”
Malcolm smiled.
Nathan felt dread.
“What did you do?”
Malcolm straightened his jacket.
“Your father taught me something about empires.”
Nathan grabbed his lapel.
“What?”
“If you cannot control the building…”
Malcolm looked toward the windows.
“…empty it.”
Security automatically unlocked the conference room.
Employees flooded the hallways.
Malcolm disappeared into the crowd.
Victoria tried to follow.
Grace blocked her.
“Where is my daughter?”
Victoria stared at her.
Then whispered, “Ask Nathan’s father.”
Grace went still.
“He’s dead.”
Victoria smiled.
“That doesn’t mean he didn’t choose the place.”
She slipped past.
Nathan caught the words.
He grabbed Victoria.
“What place?”
She looked at him.
“For five years your father paid for Lily’s silence.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?”
Victoria leaned close.
“Where do you think he planned to put her if Grace ever stopped cooperating?”
Then she pulled away.
Police officers appeared at the far end of the hall.
Detective Reyes shouted.
“Victoria Vale!”
Victoria froze.
Reyes approached.
“You are being detained in connection with evidence tampering and conspiracy.”
Malcolm was gone.
Victoria looked at Nathan.
For the first time, real fear appeared.
“My father will destroy you.”
Nathan shook his head.
“He already tried.”
Reyes cuffed her.
Grace stepped forward.
“Where is Lily?”
Victoria said nothing.
Grace grabbed her sleeve.
“Please.”
The entire fight disappeared from Grace’s voice.
She was only a mother now.
“Please tell me where my baby is.”
Victoria looked at her.
For one second, something almost human crossed her face.
Then she whispered two words.
“St. Matthew’s.”
Nathan froze.
Grace stared.
“What is that?”
Nathan knew.
A private children’s residence in Connecticut.
Officially, it was a therapeutic boarding facility.
Unofficially, years earlier wealthy families had used it to hide scandals.
Nathan’s father had donated millions.
Nathan turned to Reyes.
“We need to go now.”
Reyes nodded.
She called local authorities.
Grace was already moving.
Nathan caught up.
“Nathan.”
Daniel’s voice stopped him.
The attorney stood beside the conference room.
His face was pale.
“What?”
“The press already has the board recording.”
Nathan stared.
“How?”
“Someone streamed it.”
Nathan looked toward the elevators.
Malcolm.
Daniel held up his phone.
Cole Industries stock was collapsing.
Down eleven percent.
Fourteen.
Seventeen.
Trading halted.
Nathan watched billions disappear from the company’s market value.
His father’s empire was burning.
Exactly as Malcolm promised.
Grace touched Nathan’s arm.
He looked at her.
She was injured.
Terrified.
Her daughter was missing.
And still she asked, “Are you okay?”
Nathan looked at the stock price.
Then at Grace.
He turned off the phone.
“My daughter is still missing.”
May you like
He walked toward the stairs.
“That is the only number I care about now.”
