Chapter 4

Adrian did not sleep.
At sunrise, Detective Rachel Monroe was back in his study.
Daniel stood near the door.
Lily and Noah were upstairs with Maria.
Adrian played the recording of Emily’s call.
Rachel listened without interrupting.
When it ended, she looked at Adrian.
“You didn’t arrange to meet her?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“I wanted to.”
“I know.”
“She says she has Caroline’s voicemail.”
“If it exists, we’ll get it.”
Adrian hated the calmness in her voice.
His wife might have been murdered.
Calm felt impossible.
Rachel continued.
“We have another problem.”
“What?”
“Richard Hale is missing.”
Adrian stared.
“Missing?”
“His wife says he left their home around midnight.”
“Where?”
“She doesn’t know.”
“His office?”
“Empty.”
Adrian walked toward the window.
The same backyard stretched beyond the glass.
The doghouse remained near the garden wall.
Police tape surrounded it now.
Yesterday it had been an ugly piece of wood.
Today it had become the first crack in an entire hidden world.
Rachel’s phone buzzed.
She read the message.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
“The pharmacy bottle from Vanessa’s box.”
Adrian turned.
“What about it?”
“The label was damaged, but the lab recovered enough information.”
“And?”
“It was originally prescribed to Stephen Wells.”
“The doctor?”
“Yes.”
“What drug?”
Rachel looked at him carefully.
“Midazolam.”
Adrian knew enough to recognize the name.
“A sedative.”
“Yes.”
His throat tightened.
“What was Vanessa doing with it?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“You think she used it on Caroline.”
“I think we need evidence.”
Adrian slammed his palm against the desk.
“My wife said someone was drugging her.”
“And if we move too fast, whoever helped Vanessa will know exactly what we have.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You think Richard helped.”
“I think the note deserves investigation.”
“And Dr. Wells?”
“The name on the medication deserves investigation.”
Adrian paced.
“Find Emily.”
“We’re working on it.”
“No. I can find her faster.”
Rachel’s eyes narrowed.
“Do not turn this into one of your corporate investigations.”
“I have resources.”
“And I have warrants.”
“I have people in six countries.”
“This is not a business acquisition.”
“No. It’s my family.”
“Exactly. Which means you are emotionally compromised.”
Adrian stopped.
“I missed what was happening to Lily because I trusted Vanessa.”
Rachel softened slightly.
“That doesn’t mean you ignore instructions now.”
Before Adrian could answer, Lily appeared at the doorway.
She was wearing pajamas.
One hand held a stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy?”
He immediately changed.
“What happened?”
“I heard you.”
He crouched.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked at Rachel.
“Is Vanessa coming back?”
“No,” Adrian said.
Rachel added carefully, “Not today.”
Lily’s shoulders relaxed.
Then she looked toward the backyard.
“Can you make the doghouse go away?”
Adrian felt something break inside him.
“Yes.”
“Today?”
“Yes.”
He called Daniel.
“Have it removed as soon as the police release it.”
Rachel shook her head.
“Not yet. Evidence.”
Lily’s face fell.
Adrian thought for a moment.
“Then build a fence around that section. She doesn’t have to see it.”
Daniel nodded.
Lily walked to Adrian.
He lifted her.
She whispered into his ear.
“I remembered something else.”
His pulse quickened.
“What?”
“The night Vanessa got mad because I found the box.”
“Yes?”
“She was talking on the phone.”
“What did she say?”
Lily looked toward Rachel.
“She said, ‘The girl saw Caroline’s stuff.’”
Rachel stepped closer.
“Anything else?”
“She said, ‘You promised me this was finished.’”
Adrian exchanged a glance with the detective.
“Did she say a name?”
Lily shook her head.
“Was it a man or woman on the phone?”
“I couldn’t hear.”
“Do you remember what phone she used?”
Lily thought.
“The red one.”
Adrian frowned.
“Red?”
“She had a little red phone.”
The second phone in the box was black.
Rachel noticed too.
“You found another device?”
Adrian asked.
Lily nodded.
“She kept it in the laundry room.”
“Where?”
“Behind the soap.”
Rachel called her evidence team immediately.
Ten minutes later, an officer emerged from the laundry room carrying a red prepaid phone sealed in a clear evidence bag.
Vanessa had missed it.
The phone was locked.
But Rachel looked almost pleased.
“This could help.”
Adrian turned to Lily.
“You just helped us.”
Lily didn’t smile.
“Will Vanessa be mad?”
“She doesn’t get to be around you.”
“Ever?”
Adrian hesitated only because he knew courts existed.
Then he answered the only way a father could.
“Not if I can prevent it.”
By noon, news vans had gathered outside the mansion gates.
The story had leaked.
MILLIONAIRE’S WIFE ARRESTED AFTER CHILDREN FOUND LOCKED IN DOGHOUSE.
Adrian’s company stock dipped three percent before lunch.
His board demanded a statement.
His public relations team wanted him in a video.
He refused.
“I’m not turning my children into a corporate defense.”
His CFO, Nathan Price, spoke through the conference screen.
“Adrian, this is affecting thousands of employees.”
“I know.”
“Then give us something.”
“Say my family is cooperating with law enforcement. Nothing about the children.”
“The press is already saying Lily accused Vanessa.”
“Then the press can say whatever it wants.”
Nathan paused.
“You’re making an emotional decision.”
“Yes.”
Adrian disconnected.
His children came first.
For the first time in years, that sentence felt less like something he said and more like something he intended to live.
At 2:40 p.m., Rachel called.
“We found Emily.”
“Where?”
“A motel outside Richmond.”
“Is she safe?”
“For now.”
“Did she give you the voicemail?”
“Yes.”
Adrian stood.
“I want to hear it.”
There was a pause.
“I’ll come over.”
Twenty-five minutes later, Rachel returned.
She had a tablet.
Adrian sat at the dining table.
The same table where Vanessa’s box had been opened.
Rachel placed the device in front of him.
“This may be difficult.”
“Play it.”
She did.
Static filled the speaker.
Then Caroline’s voice.
Adrian nearly broke at the first word.
“Emily?”
He closed his eyes.
Five years disappeared.
Caroline sounded frightened.
Breathless.
Alive.
“I don’t have much time. Adrian thinks I’m exhausted. He thinks I’m forgetting things because of stress, but I’m not.”
Adrian gripped the edge of the table.
Caroline continued.
“I found pills in Vanessa’s bag. She said they were vitamins. They weren’t. I had my blood tested without telling anyone.”
Rachel watched Adrian carefully.
“Someone has been putting something in my tea.”
A sharp breath.
“I think it’s Vanessa.”
Adrian whispered, “Oh God.”
The recording continued.
“I confronted her today. She didn’t deny it. She just smiled.”
Caroline’s voice cracked.
“She told me I should stop asking questions about Richard.”
Adrian’s head snapped up.
“Richard?”
The voicemail continued.
“I thought Richard was Adrian’s friend. But I found transfers from one of the foundation accounts into a shell company. Richard approved them.”
Rachel took notes.
Caroline said, “Vanessa knows. She may be involved. I’m taking copies to the police tomorrow morning.”
A pause.
Then Caroline whispered:
“If anything happens to me, do not believe it was an accident.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
The voicemail ended.
For several seconds, neither he nor Rachel spoke.
Finally Adrian asked, “What happened the next morning?”
Rachel already knew.
“Caroline left home at 8:12.”
“She crashed at 8:47.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked toward the window.
Rain had begun.
He remembered that morning.
Caroline kissed Lily.
She told Adrian she had an appointment downtown.
He had been answering emails.
He barely looked up.
At 8:53, the police called.
His life ended.
And now he understood that Caroline had been trying to save it.
“Reopen the case.”
Rachel said, “It already has been.”
Adrian looked at her.
“As a homicide?”
“As a suspicious death pending evidence.”
“That’s not enough.”
“It’s the legal process.”
His phone rang.
Daniel.
Adrian answered.
“What?”
“We have someone at the front gate.”
“Reporter?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Daniel hesitated.
“You should come outside.”
Adrian and Rachel walked to the security room.
On the monitor stood a gray-haired man in a raincoat.
He looked exhausted.
Terrified.
He held both hands where the cameras could see them.
Adrian had never met him.
Rachel leaned closer to the screen.
“Who is he?”
Daniel checked the gate intercom log.
“He says his name is Stephen Wells.”
The doctor from the medication bottle.
Rachel immediately called for backup.
Adrian stared at the monitor.
Dr. Wells looked directly into the camera.
Then spoke into the intercom.
“I need to talk to Adrian Mercer.”
Daniel pressed the button.
“Regarding what?”
Wells glanced over his shoulder.
“Caroline’s death.”
Adrian’s heart pounded.
Rachel signaled for no one to open the gate.
Daniel asked, “What about it?”
Wells swallowed.
“I can prove she was drugged.”
Adrian stepped toward the microphone.
“You prescribed the medication.”
Wells froze when he heard Adrian’s voice.
“Yes.”
“For Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Then why did she have it?”
The doctor looked close to tears.
“Because Richard Hale made me prescribe it.”
Rachel leaned toward the intercom.
“Dr. Wells, this is Detective Monroe. Do not leave your position.”
His face changed.
“Police are there?”
“Yes.”
He started backing away.
Rachel’s tone sharpened.
“Do not move.”
“I can’t do this.”
“Stay where you are.”
Wells looked toward the road.
Headlights appeared behind him.
A black sedan.
The same shape as the one from the previous night.
Wells saw it.
His face turned white.
“Oh God.”
The sedan accelerated.
Daniel yelled.
“Get down!”
Wells jumped behind a stone pillar.
The sedan sped past the gate.
A window lowered.
Three shots cracked through the rain.
One bullet shattered the gate camera.
The screen went black.
Adrian heard Lily scream from upstairs.
Daniel ran toward the door.
Rachel pulled her weapon.
May you like
And from the dark monitor speakers came Dr. Wells’s final terrified words before the audio died:
“They’re trying to kill everyone who knows.”
