Chapter 6

Adrian did not return to the mansion.

Detective Harper refused to let him.

Not after Vanessa named Daniel Price.

Not after police learned the security director had vanished less than an hour after Vanessa’s arrest.

Daniel had worked for Adrian for seven years.

Military background.

Clean record.

He had personally designed the mansion’s current security protocols.

He knew every gate.

Every camera.

Every safe room.

Every emergency route.

If Vanessa was telling the truth, Adrian’s security had never been protection.

It had been surveillance.

Harper moved Adrian, Lily, and Noah to a secure property outside the city.

Mrs. Alvarez came with them.

No staff.

No private drivers.

No company security.

Only police personnel whose identities were not disclosed to Adrian until arrival.

Lily hated the new place.

It was smaller than the mansion, though still comfortable.

She stood in the hallway holding her stuffed fox and looked around.

“Are we hiding?”

Adrian knelt.

“For a little while.”

“From Vanessa?”

He hesitated.

“From anyone who might want to scare us.”

Lily whispered, “Grown-ups are scary.”

Adrian had no answer.

That evening, Harper arrived with two investigators.

They had found Claire’s service records.

Her appointment had originally been scheduled at the dealership Adrian always used.

Thirty-six hours before the appointment, someone called and moved it to an independent garage across town.

The caller identified herself as Rebecca Shaw.

The garage had closed two years later.

The owner had died.

But one mechanic was still alive.

Police found him.

He remembered Claire’s SUV.

Not because of Claire.

Because a man had arrived before her and offered cash to perform “a special inspection.”

“What man?” Adrian asked.

Harper placed a photograph on the table.

Daniel.

Adrian stared.

The mechanic could not prove Daniel touched the brakes.

But he remembered him.

Daniel had claimed to be part of Claire’s husband’s security team.

Which was technically true.

At the time, Daniel had only recently been hired as an outside consultant.

Adrian stood at the window.

“So Daniel knew Rebecca before he worked for me.”

“That is our current assumption.”

“And Claire dies.”

“Yes.”

“Then Daniel joins my company permanently.”

“Six months later.”

“Rebecca stays beside me.”

“Yes.”

“Then Vanessa appears.”

Harper nodded.

Adrian turned.

“They built this around me.”

“We don’t know the full scope.”

“What more do you need?”

Harper remained calm.

“Evidence that proves coordination. Not just suspicious connections.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“My wife is dead. My daughter was drugged. My son was locked outside. My assistant disappeared. My security director disappeared. And the woman I married has three identities.”

“I agree it is more than suspicious.”

“Then say it.”

Harper held his gaze.

“You were targeted.”

The words landed heavily.

“Why?”

“That may be the most important question.”

Money seemed obvious.

But Adrian had known richer people.

The spreadsheet contained other names.

Some wealthier.

Some less wealthy.

There had to be a pattern.

Harper opened another file.

“We analyzed the database from Vanessa’s USB drive.”

“And?”

“The victims are not random.”

Adrian sat down.

“What connects them?”

“Companies.”

“What companies?”

“Companies with access to sensitive infrastructure, medical technology, energy systems, financial clearing networks.”

Adrian froze.

Cole Systems manufactured data-management platforms for logistics networks.

Government agencies used some of their technology.

So did ports.

Hospitals.

Banks.

Vanessa had repeatedly asked Adrian about his work.

He thought she was trying to understand him.

Now he remembered specific questions.

Server locations.

Backup facilities.

Which executives held encryption keys.

He felt stupid.

“She wasn’t interested in my money.”

“Not only your money.”

“What did she access?”

“We’re checking.”

Harper slid another document across the table.

“This was found inside her safe.”

A printed organizational chart of Cole Systems.

Three names had red circles around them.

Adrian.

His chief technology officer.

And the director of cryptographic operations.

Beside Adrian’s name were handwritten notes.

Emotional vulnerability after spouse death.

Children primary leverage.

High guilt response.

Adrian stared at the words.

His family had been reduced to vulnerabilities.

Lily primary attachment.

Noah secondary.

CLAIRE: completed disruption.

His throat tightened.

“What does completed disruption mean?”

“We don’t know.”

“I do.”

Harper said nothing.

Adrian stood.

“They killed her to destabilize me.”

“Possibly.”

“Then sent Vanessa when I was isolated.”

“Possibly.”

“They used my children to control her and eventually control me.”

“Possibly.”

He looked at Harper.

“You really love that word.”

“I love evidence.”

He understood.

He hated it.

But he understood.

Lily appeared in the doorway.

Her face was white.

“Daddy?”

He instantly changed his expression.

“What happened?”

“Someone is outside.”

Harper stood.

“Who?”

“A man.”

Police were moving before Adrian reached Lily.

“Where?”

“Back window.”

Harper ordered Adrian to take the children into the safe room.

He lifted Noah from Mrs. Alvarez.

Lily grabbed his shirt.

Officers rushed outside.

For ten minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Harper received a radio message.

False alarm.

No intruder.

A delivery worker had mistakenly entered the neighboring access road.

Lily was shaking.

Adrian sat beside her.

“It’s okay.”

She started crying.

“No, it’s not.”

He pulled her close.

“I know.”

“I want Mommy.”

The words came from somewhere deep inside her.

Adrian closed his eyes.

“So do I.”

“I don’t remember her voice.”

He held Lily tighter.

“I have videos.”

She pulled back.

“You do?”

“Hundreds.”

“Can we watch them?”

He almost said tomorrow.

Then he realized he was done postponing what mattered.

“Yes.”

They sat together in the safe room and watched old family videos on Adrian’s tablet.

Claire singing terribly while making pancakes.

Claire chasing toddler Lily around the living room.

Claire laughing when Lily covered Adrian’s face in birthday cake.

Lily smiled.

Then cried.

Then smiled again.

Noah watched the screen without understanding.

Mrs. Alvarez sat in the corner wiping her eyes.

In one video, Claire was holding Lily beside the mansion’s garden.

Adrian heard his own voice behind the camera.

“What do you want for your birthday?”

Claire smiled.

“Nothing.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“I have everything.”

She kissed Lily’s head.

Then she looked into the camera.

“Just promise me you won’t become one of those fathers who thinks paying for everything means being there.”

Adrian stopped the video.

The room went silent.

He couldn’t breathe for a moment.

Lily touched his arm.

“You’re here now.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

His phone rang.

Harper answered instead.

It was one of her investigators.

She listened.

Her face changed.

“Send it securely.”

“What?” Adrian asked.

Harper waited for the file.

Then opened an email on her encrypted tablet.

“We located Rebecca’s abandoned car.”

“Where?”

“Airport parking.”

“She flew somewhere?”

“No record of her boarding.”

“What did you find?”

“Blood.”

Adrian stared.

“Whose?”

“Testing is pending.”

Harper continued.

“There was also a phone hidden beneath the passenger seat.”

She showed Adrian the screen.

One unsent draft message.

Addressed to him.

ADRIAN, I AM SORRY. I DID NOT KNOW THEY WERE GOING TO KILL CLAIRE. BY THE TIME I UNDERSTOOD, DANIEL SAID LILY WOULD BE NEXT IF I TALKED. VANESSA IS NOT THE PERSON RUNNING THIS. FIND—

The message ended there.

Adrian read it twice.

“Find what?”

“We don’t know.”

“Why didn’t she send it?”

Harper’s silence gave him the answer.

Something had stopped her.

The next morning, blood from the vehicle was confirmed to be Rebecca’s.

But there was no body.

At noon, police found airport surveillance footage.

Rebecca entered the parking garage alone.

Seven minutes later, Daniel’s SUV entered.

Daniel left twenty-three minutes later.

Rebecca did not.

Adrian watched the recording.

“Arrest him.”

“We have a warrant.”

“Find him.”

“We’re trying.”

Harper’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed immediately.

“What address?”

She wrote it down.

Then looked at Adrian.

“They found Daniel’s SUV.”

“Where?”

“Near an abandoned warehouse district.”

“Was he there?”

“No.”

“Rebecca?”

“No.”

Harper paused.

“But inside the vehicle, they found one item.”

She showed Adrian a photograph.

A little pink backpack.

He recognized it immediately.

Lily’s.

Adrian looked toward his daughter across the room.

She was coloring beside Noah.

“That backpack disappeared months ago.”

Harper nodded.

“Daniel had it.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Lily looked up and saw the image.

Her crayon fell from her hand.

“No.”

Adrian went to her.

“What?”

She backed away from the tablet.

“No.”

“What is it?”

Her eyes widened in terror.

“That’s not my backpack.”

Adrian frowned.

“It looks exactly like yours.”

Lily shook her head rapidly.

“I know.”

“Then why—”

She whispered, “Vanessa bought two.”

Nobody moved.

Adrian crouched.

“Why?”

May you like

Lily stared at him.

“She said one was for when I went away.”
