Chapter 15: The Truth I Was Never Supposed to Find

I read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

Because my mind refused to accept the words.

My mother knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

Enough to understand the danger around our family.

Enough to make choices that changed everyone’s lives.

The letter continued.

*“I found out Charles was stealing from the foundation. I found out Richard knew. I found out your father was getting closer to exposing everything.””*

My hands trembled.

*“I was afraid of losing my family.””*

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

I continued reading.

*“I made the mistake of believing I could control the situation.””*

A tear fell onto the paper.

*“I asked someone to scare Charles into leaving. I never wanted anyone hurt.””*

My breath caught.

The accident.

The fear.

The damage.

All because someone thought they could control monsters.

But monsters never stayed controlled.

The final page was the hardest.

*“Ethan, if you survived, it means someone failed to stop you from finding the truth.””*

I looked at Richard.

At Isabella.

At Brooke.

At everyone who had been carrying pieces of my life.

*“The person you should fear most is not the one who hates you.””*

I turned the page.

*“It is the one who believes they are protecting you.””*

The letter ended there.

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood.

My mother started the chain.

But she wasn’t the end.

Marcus slowly looked at Daniel.

“Where is Eleanor’s original file?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Gone.””

Richard suddenly stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“I know where it is.””

“Where?””

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“My old house.””

We drove there before sunrise.

The house had been empty for years.

The place where my childhood memories lived.

The place where my family had once been happy.

Richard opened a hidden compartment behind an old painting.

Inside was a small box.

He handed it to me.

“This was your mother’s.””

I opened it.

Inside were photos.

Letters.

And one final document.

A legal transfer.

I read the name.

My entire body went still.

The owner of the account used to fund the truck.

The person who paid the driver.

The person who financed the entire operation.

Was not Charles.

Was not Richard.

Was not Victoria.

It was a company.

A company that had quietly purchased shares in Vance Hospitality six months before my accident.

A company controlled by someone everyone had overlooked.

I looked at the signature.

Then I understood.

The accident.

The betrayal.

The entire plan.

It was never about destroying my family.

It was about taking everything after I was gone.

And the person behind it all was someone who knew me better than anyone.

Someone who knew my habits.

My weaknesses.

My trust.

My heart.

I looked at the final signature.

And whispered the name.

“Brooke.””

Everyone turned.

Brooke went pale.

“No.””

I held up the document.

Her name was there.

But then she looked closer.

And her expression changed.

Because she realized something too.

Someone had used her identity.

Again.

Marcus checked the signature.

Then looked up.

“This isn’t Brooke.””

He pointed at the date.

“The real person signed this before the accident.””

I stared at the paper.

Before the accident.

Before everything changed.

Then I noticed the final line.

A hidden message written beneath the signature.

*“The person you trusted most was never the person you knew.””*

The room went silent.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

“Ethan.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

It was impossible.

It was the voice of someone who had been dead for years.

My father.

“Your mother wasn’t the only one who left you a secret.””

The call ended.

And for the first time in six months…

May you like

I wasn’t afraid of losing my old life.

I was afraid of discovering how much of it had ever been real.
