Chapter 14: The Person Who Started It All

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

But nobody left.

Not because we couldn’t.

Because we were finally standing in the middle of the truth.

And none of us knew how deep it went.

Richard sat across from me in the warehouse office.

The same man who once taught me how to negotiate.

The same man who told me family mattered.

Now I wondered how much of that was real.

“Who paid for the truck?””

He stared at the floor.

“Ethan.””

“Answer me.””

His shoulders dropped.

“The payment came from an account connected to Vance Hospitality.””

My hands tightened.

“So someone inside my company.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Richard looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

Marcus placed the documents on the table.

“The payment trail was hidden.””

Richard nodded.

“Someone was careful.””

Brooke sat quietly in the corner.

For once, she had nothing to say.

Then Isabella spoke.

“My father found something.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She held up the old files.

“Before he died, he created a backup.””

Marcus took the papers.

“What kind of backup?””

“A list of everyone who knew about the money.””

He scanned it.

Then stopped.

“What?””

His face changed.

“Ethan.””

I moved closer.

The list had names.

Employees.

Executives.

Advisors.

But one name was circled.

A name I recognized.

Daniel.

The ballroom manager.

“What does he have to do with this?””

Richard looked shocked.

“He worked for the foundation?””

Marcus nodded.

“Twenty years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

We had spent hours searching for someone powerful.

Someone hidden.

But maybe the answer was always nearby.

Daniel.

The man who apologized.

The man who welcomed me.

The man who looked terrified when I arrived.

We returned to the gala hotel.

Security had already locked down the building.

Daniel was waiting in the office.

When he saw us, his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Acceptance.

“You found it.””

I stopped.

“You knew.””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

Brooke stared.

“How?””

Daniel sat down.

“Because I was there.””

Richard stepped forward.

“There?””

“The night everything started.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father trusted me.””

I felt a strange sense of betrayal.

Everyone trusted someone.

Everyone was disappointed.

“He asked me to protect the records.””

“Did you?””

Daniel looked away.

“No.””

“Why?””

His voice cracked.

“Because they threatened my family.””

Nobody spoke.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the window.

“I never saw his face.””

Marcus frowned.

“But you knew who gave orders.””

Daniel nodded.

“Someone powerful.””

“Name.””

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Eleanor Vance.””

The room froze.

I felt my heart stop.

Eleanor.

My mother.

A woman who died when I was young.

A woman I remembered as kind.

Impossible.

Richard stepped back.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

“That’s not possible.””

“She wasn’t who you thought she was.””

I couldn’t speak.

My entire life shifted again.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew about the money.””

“No.””

“She knew about Charles.””

“No.””

“She knew everything.””

I looked at Richard.

He looked devastated.

Not surprised.

Devastated.

“You knew.””

He closed his eyes.

“I suspected.””

My voice became quiet.

“You suspected my mother was involved?””

“I didn’t want to believe it.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She wasn’t the mastermind.””

A small relief.

Then he continued.

“But she started the first move.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Daniel pulled out one final envelope.

“Because she wanted to protect you.””

I stared at it.

Protect me?

After all this?

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

May you like

The first line made my hands shake.

*“Ethan, if you are reading this, it means I failed to keep you away from the truth.””*
