Chapter 4: The Phone That Wasn't His

“That's not mine.””

Mark's voice echoed through the private office, but nobody moved to reassure him.

Daniel Harrison stood beside the door, holding his phone with both hands. Rebecca Collins, my attorney, had stopped halfway through closing her folder. Amber sat rigidly in her chair, her fingers wrapped around the straps of her handbag.

I watched my son carefully.

For forty-six years, I had known the expressions that crossed Mark's face. I knew what he looked like when he lied about breaking a window as a child. I knew how he looked when he hid a failed exam from his father. And I knew the helpless expression he wore whenever he wanted someone else to solve a problem he had created.

This was different.

He looked genuinely frightened.

“Daniel,” I said, “explain precisely what you found.””

“Our security director traced the login to a device registered under Mr. Mitchell's family account,” Daniel replied, correcting himself after a glance at Amber.

“The device identifier matches a tablet purchased using Mr. Whitmore's credit card approximately eleven months ago.””

Mark shook his head.

“I don't own a tablet.””

Amber suddenly stood.

“I bought that tablet!””

Everyone turned toward her.

She swallowed.

“I bought it as a Christmas present for Mark last year. He didn't want it, so I kept it.””

Mark stared at her.

“You told me you returned it.””

“I changed my mind!””

“You said the store refunded the money.””

Amber's mouth opened, then closed.

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Mrs. Mitchell, who has been using the tablet?””

“No one. It's in our house.””

“Then why was it used to access the authorization account yesterday?””

“I don't know!””

Daniel looked at me.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we can preserve the access logs and provide them to your legal team. However, we cannot determine who physically used the device from the login information alone.””

“Good,” I said.

“Then we won't accuse anyone without evidence.””

Amber exhaled sharply, apparently relieved.

But Rebecca wasn't finished.

“There's another issue. The device accessed the account through a private network registered to a company called Bennett Strategic Solutions.””

Mark slowly turned toward his wife.

“Christopher's company?””

Rebecca nodded.

Amber grabbed the back of her chair.

“He helps dozens of people with their businesses. That doesn't mean anything.””

“Perhaps not,” Rebecca replied.

“That's why we'll investigate rather than speculate.””

I looked at my son.

“Mark, do you have access to your wife's email or financial accounts?””

“No. We have separate accounts. I pay the mortgage and utilities. Amber handles everything else.””

“And do you know whether she has ever used your personal information to open an account?””

He hesitated.

“I don't think so.””

Amber gave a bitter laugh.

“Eleanor, are you interrogating my husband now?””

“No,” I replied.

“I'm trying to establish what happened to my company.””

“You're acting like we're criminals!””

“I haven't called either of you criminals.””

“You're treating us like criminals!””

I held her gaze.

“Then you should have no reason to fear an investigation.””

Her cheeks flushed red.

Mark stepped between us.

“Enough. Both of you.””

I almost smiled at the irony. My son had finally discovered how to intervene in a confrontation, but only after the argument threatened to inconvenience him.

Rebecca placed a business card on the table.

“Mark, if you believe someone has misused your identity, you should document what you know and consult independent counsel. Eleanor's legal team represents her and her companies. We cannot represent you in a potential dispute involving your wife.””

Mark nodded, looking overwhelmed.

“Understood.””

Amber grabbed her handbag.

“I'm leaving.””

“Where are you going?”” Mark asked.

“Upstairs. I need to be alone.””

“You can wait until we understand what's happening.””

She laughed without humor.

“You don't get to tell me where I can go.””

She marched toward the door, but Daniel stepped aside only after Rebecca confirmed that no one was preventing her from leaving.

At the threshold, Amber turned back toward me.

“You're enjoying this, aren't you? You finally have an excuse to show everyone how powerful you are.””

I looked at the woman who had called me a maid less than an hour earlier.

“No, Amber. I would have preferred to spend the afternoon watching the sunset with my son.””

For one brief moment, her expression softened.

Then she said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“You should have stayed in your place.””

She slammed the door behind her.

Mark sank into a chair.

“Mom, I'm sorry.””

I sat opposite him.

“For what?””

He rubbed his face.

“For laughing downstairs. For not defending you. For everything.””

I wanted to embrace him. I wanted to tell him that one apology could repair the years of silence between us.

But I had learned that forgiveness offered too quickly often became permission to repeat the same behavior.

“Mark, do you understand why I never told you how much money I had?””

He nodded slowly.

“You didn't want me to depend on it.””

“I wanted you to love me without thinking about what I could give you. I wanted to know you would visit me when I had nothing to offer but a cup of coffee and a conversation.””

He looked down at his hands.

“I thought you were comfortable. I didn't realize—”

“You never asked.””

His eyes filled with tears.

I let the silence remain between us.

Then Rebecca's phone vibrated.

She read the message and frowned.

“What is it?”” I asked.

“The security director found another login associated with the account.””

“Whose?””

She looked at Mark.

“Your son's email address.””

Mark stood abruptly.

“I told you, I never accessed that account!””

Rebecca turned the screen toward him.

The login had occurred at 2:14 a.m. the previous night.

Underneath the timestamp was a recovery email address.

It belonged to an account Mark claimed he had never seen before.

I leaned closer.

The address contained a name that made my stomach tighten.

*Eleanor.Whitmore.Trust.*

May you like

Someone had created an account using my name.

And whoever had done it had apparently known exactly when my son would be asleep.
