Chapter 6: The Evidence They Left Behind
Nobody moved.
The photograph hung in the hidden room like a warning.
My younger face stared back at me.
Six months earlier.
The day everything changed.
The day my life split into before and after.
Vincent descended first.
His weapon was drawn.
“Stay behind me.””
Normally, I would have argued.
I hated being protected.
It reminded me of everything I had lost.
My independence.
My confidence.
My control.
But this time, I listened.
Because someone had built a secret room beneath my home.
Someone had been hiding information inches away from me.
The staircase ended in a small underground office.
Not abandoned.
Not forgotten.
Used.
A desk sat against the wall.
A computer.
Several folders.
And dozens of photographs.
All of me.
Walking.
Sleeping.
Entering meetings.
Leaving hospitals.
My stomach tightened.
“This wasn’t recent,” Vincent whispered.
No.
It wasn’t.
Someone had been studying me.
For months.
Clare covered Ellie’s eyes.
“Mr. Vale…”
“I know.””
I couldn’t look away.
Every photo represented a moment when someone had been close enough to watch.
Close enough to plan.
Vincent opened the first folder.
Inside were medical records.
Not mine.
Copies.
My eyes narrowed.
“Whose are those?””
Vincent checked the name.
Then looked at me.
“Arthur Voss.””
That was unexpected.
“Why would Arthur keep his own records?””
Vincent opened another page.
Then another.
His expression changed.
“Dominic.””
“What?””
“These aren’t medical records.””
He placed the papers on the desk.
“They’re evaluations.””
I picked one up.
A psychological assessment.
A business profile.
A list of weaknesses.
And at the top:
*Subject: Arthur Voss.*
I frowned.
“This isn’t from Arthur.””
Vincent looked around the room.
“Someone was investigating him.””
That changed everything.
Someone wasn’t just helping Arthur.
Someone was watching Arthur too.
I opened another folder.
Inside were photographs of meetings.
Arthur talking to executives.
Arthur entering buildings.
Arthur receiving envelopes.
But then I saw something.
A photograph taken three weeks ago.
Arthur sitting in a restaurant.
Across from him was someone familiar.
Someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
My hand froze.
Vincent noticed.
“Who is that?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because saying the name made it real.
“It’s Daniel.””
My younger brother’s best friend.
The man who had managed my family’s investments for ten years.
The man who helped me after my accident.
The man who told everyone Arthur was the only person capable of supporting me.
Vincent stared at the picture.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
The betrayal felt different.
Arthur was a rival.
I expected ambition from him.
But Daniel?
Daniel was family.
A sound came from behind us.
A small gasp.
I turned.
Clare had seen the picture.
Her face had gone pale.
“Clare?””
She looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
“I know him.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
She stepped backward.
“I didn’t know his name.””
“Explain.””
Her hands shook.
“The man who came to the house.””
“When?””
“Before your accident.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What did he do?””
“He argued with Mr. Voss.””
“About what?””
Clare looked terrified.
“He said the plan was going too far.””
Nobody spoke.
“What plan?””
She looked toward Ellie.
Then whispered:
“The plan to make you disappear.””
The words felt like ice.
Vincent immediately moved closer.
“Clare, you need to tell us everything.””
She nodded slowly.
“I didn’t understand at the time. I thought they were arguing about business.””
“But?””
“But Daniel said something.””
“What?””
She closed her eyes.
“I remember because it scared me.””
I waited.
“He said, ‘You promised nobody would get hurt.’”
The room went silent.
Nobody got hurt.
That meant someone knew.
Someone knew there was danger.
Someone knew my accident wasn’t an accident.
I looked back at the photograph.
Arthur.
Daniel.
The hidden room.
The altered brace.
All the pieces were moving.
But one piece was missing.
Who had been helping them?
Then Vincent’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And his face changed.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“The security team found another hidden file.””
“Where?””
“On the computer.””
“Open it.””
Vincent hesitated.
“Dominic…”
“What?””
“It’s a video.””
“Play it.””
The screen flickered.
A camera turned on.
A dark room appeared.
Then a person stepped into view.
My breath stopped.
Because I recognized the voice before I saw the face.
“Dominic Vale was never supposed to survive the crash.””
May you like
The video continued.
And the person speaking was the last person I expected.
