Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Hid

I had imagined seeing my mother again a thousand times.

Every version was different.

Sometimes she cried.

Sometimes she hugged me.

Sometimes she explained why she left.

Sometimes she apologized.

But I never imagined this.

Her standing in my home.

After fifteen years.

Telling me Daniel was right.

Vincent immediately moved toward her.

“Dominic, step back.””

I didn’t move.

I couldn’t.

My entire life had become a series of impossible truths.

My mother was alive.

My father had secrets.

Arthur wasn’t the mastermind.

Daniel was.

And now the woman I thought I lost was telling me the worst part was still ahead.

“Why did you leave?””

The question came out colder than I intended.

My mother looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Daniel?””

She nodded.

“And your father.””

That surprised me.

“My father?””

She walked slowly into the room.

“I loved your father.””

Her voice broke.

“But love does not erase the things people do.””

I looked away.

“Tell me everything.””

She sat down.

For the first time, she looked fragile.

Not like the woman from my childhood memories.

Not like someone powerful.

Just human.

“Your father built an empire.””

She looked at the old documents.

“But he built parts of it by making promises he couldn’t keep.””

I listened.

“Richard Cross discovered that your father was hiding financial problems.””

“Daniel’s father.””

“Yes.””

“And he blackmailed him?””

“No.””

My mother shook her head.

“He offered to help.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Richard was already planning something bigger.””

She took a breath.

“Richard wanted control.””

“Over my father’s company?””

“Over everything.””

She explained.

Years ago, Richard discovered that my father’s biggest weakness was trust.

He used that weakness.

He convinced my father he was helping him.

Meanwhile, he created secret accounts.

Hidden investments.

Backup plans.

When my father finally discovered the truth, it was too late.

“Then why blame my father?””

“Because Daniel didn’t know everything.””

She looked at me.

“He only knew the version his father gave him.””

I thought about Daniel.

His anger.

His certainty.

His belief that he was correcting history.

“He spent years chasing revenge for something that wasn’t true.””

“Yes.””

My mother looked toward the door.

“And your father knew.””

“What?””

“He knew Daniel was being manipulated.””

“Then why didn’t he tell him?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Because he was afraid Daniel would become exactly what he became.””

Silence.

The pieces finally connected.

My father had tried to stop a disaster.

But he failed.

Everyone carried a different version of the truth.

Everyone believed they were the victim.

I looked at my mother.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She cried quietly.

“Because Daniel threatened you.””

My blood ran cold.

“He said if I returned, you would lose everything.””

“Why?””

“Because he had spent years making sure nobody would believe you.””

She reached into her bag.

“I brought this.””

A small envelope.

Inside was a letter.

From my father.

The final one.

The one he never sent.

I read it.

*Dominic,*

*If Daniel Cross ever comes to you claiming justice, remember this: revenge is often built on someone else’s lie.*

My hands shook.

The final sentence made my heart stop.

*The person who saves you may not be the person who loves you. Sometimes it is the person who has nothing left to lose.*

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

My mother hesitated.

Then answered:

“Your father wasn’t talking about me.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who was he talking about?””

Before she could answer, Vincent’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked at me.

“Dominic.””

“What?””

“We found Daniel.””

“Where?””

Vincent’s face changed.

“He’s at the original crash site.””

The accident.

The place where everything began.

My mother stood immediately.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She whispered:

“He’s going there because that’s where he hid the final evidence.””

I grabbed my cane.

“Then that’s where we go.””

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Dominic.””

I stopped.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Be careful.””

“Why?””

Her voice trembled.

“Because Daniel didn’t come there to hide evidence.””

May you like

A pause.

“He came there to finish what he started.””
