Chapter 11: The Woman Vincent Kane Kept Alive
Matthew drove without speaking.
The black sedan tore through Manhattan traffic, taking turns so sharply that I had to grip the door handle to keep from falling against him. My wrists were secured with a plastic restraint, and his gun rested between us.
Outside, the city blurred into streaks of headlights and neon.
“Where are we going?”” I asked.
Matthew kept his eyes on the road.
“Pier 19.””
“Vincent said to come alone. Why did he tell you to bring me?””
“Because he knows I won't let Anna die.””
“You don't know that she's still alive.””
He slammed his palm against the steering wheel.
“Don't.””
I fell silent.
A few seconds later, his voice softened.
“I'm sorry.””
I studied his profile.
He had Adrian's controlled posture but none of his confidence. Beneath the expensive jacket and polished shoes, I could see the frightened boy from the photograph.
“Matthew, when you said you remembered my scream, what did you mean?””
He stared through the windshield.
“The night of the fire, Vincent came into our room. He carried you downstairs, and I followed. He told me to stay behind a locked door.””
My stomach twisted.
“I remember someone crying.””
“That was me.””
He swallowed.
“I heard you shouting for our mother. Then the smoke reached the hallway. When I escaped, you were gone.””
“Why didn't you look for me?””
“I did.””
His voice broke.
“I searched every photograph, every missing-child report, every shelter I could find. But Vincent had changed my name and destroyed my records. By the time I was old enough to understand what he'd done, he had already convinced everyone that Isabella Whitmore was dead.””
I looked down at my bound hands.
“And then you joined Adrian's organization.””
“Vincent arranged it. He wanted me close enough to monitor Adrian. He said that if I worked for him, Anna would remain safe.””
“So everything you've done for Adrian has been a lie?””
Matthew's grip tightened.
“No.””
He glanced at me.
“Adrian gave me something Vincent never did. He trusted me without asking what I could offer in return.””
“Then why betray him?””
“Because every time I considered telling him the truth, Vincent sent me another photograph of Anna.””
The car slowed as we approached the waterfront.
Rain swept across the windshield. Cranes loomed over the harbor, their metal arms silhouetted against the night sky.
Matthew parked beside an abandoned warehouse.
“Listen carefully,” he said.
“When we go inside, Vincent will ask you about the nursery. He believes your father hid evidence there that can destroy him.””
“What evidence?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why does he need me?””
“Because your father created a cipher only you can read.””
I stared at him.
“I was eight years old.””
“You used to memorize things after hearing them once. Vincent believes Richard taught you the key without you realizing it.””
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“What if I can't remember?””
Matthew's expression hardened.
“Then Anna dies.””
He opened the car door.
Cold rain hit my face as he pulled me toward the warehouse.
Inside, a row of industrial lights illuminated a concrete floor scattered with broken pallets. At the far end stood Vincent Kane, flanked by Daniel Cross and several armed men.
Anna Bell sat in a chair beside him.
Her face was pale. Her gray hair hung loosely around her shoulders, and bruises marked her wrists.
When Matthew saw her, he stopped.
“Mom.””
Anna lifted her head.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Matthew?””
He rushed forward, but Daniel blocked him.
Vincent smiled.
“Not so fast. We have business to discuss.””
He gestured toward me.
“Bring Isabella here.””
Matthew pushed me forward.
Vincent studied my face.
“Your hair looks much better. Almost respectable.””
I said nothing.
He walked around me, inspecting the locket hanging from my neck.
“Have you opened it?””
“Yes.””
“Then you know what your father hid.””
“I know he loved me.””
Vincent's expression hardened.
“Love is a sentimental word people use when they lack power.””
He nodded to Daniel, who placed a folder on a nearby table.
Inside were photographs of the Whitmore estate, copies of financial statements, and several pages of handwritten notes.
“Richard Whitmore discovered that I had been diverting money from both families for years. He hid the original records somewhere in the mansion.””
“And you think I can find them?””
“I know you can.””
“How?””
Vincent smiled.
“Because your father left you a message. One that you repeated to your mother so often that she eventually memorized it.””
I stared at him.
“What message?””
He leaned closer.
“Where the moon watches the sleeping birds, the truth waits beneath the blue.””
My breath caught.
The nursery.
The blue door.
The wooden horse.
I suddenly remembered my father kneeling beside my bed, drawing a crescent moon on a piece of paper.
Every family has secrets, little Wren. The important thing is knowing where to look.
Vincent watched my face.
“There it is. You remember.””
I forced myself to remain still.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
He backhanded Matthew.
My brother hit the concrete floor.
“STOP!”” I screamed.
Anna cried out.
Vincent crouched beside Matthew and gripped his hair.
“Your brother has been very useful, Isabella. But usefulness has limits.””
Matthew spat blood onto the floor.
“Don't tell her anything.””
Vincent struck him again.
I lunged forward, but Daniel seized my shoulders.
“Please,” Anna begged.
“She's only a child.””
Vincent turned toward her.
“No, Eleanor. She's a key.””
He gestured to one of his men, who placed a small tablet on the table.
The screen showed a live video of Adrian's townhouse.
Two armed men stood outside the entrance.
Another camera showed Marco lying unconscious on the floor.
My heart stopped.
“What have you done?””
Vincent smiled.
“Your beloved crime boss is on his way here. I thought it would be polite to prepare a welcome.””
He looked at Matthew.
“You can redeem yourself by helping me obtain the documents. Or you can watch your biological mother die.””
Matthew slowly pushed himself upright.
He looked at Anna, then at me.
For the first time, he seemed to make a decision that belonged entirely to him.
“No,” he said.
Vincent frowned.
“What?””
Matthew stepped between us.
“You've controlled my life since I was five years old. You've used Anna to keep me obedient, and you've used Adrian to make me believe I could never escape you.””
He wiped blood from his mouth.
“But I'm done.””
Vincent pulled a gun from his jacket.
Matthew didn't move.
“Shoot me,” he said.
“But you won't get the records.””
Vincent raised the weapon.
Then a voice rang out from the warehouse entrance.
“I wouldn't do that if I were you.””
Adrian stood beneath the doorway, rain dripping from his coat, a gun aimed directly at Vincent.
Behind him, a line of armed men filled the entrance.
Adrian's eyes moved to me.
“Wren, get away from him.””
Vincent laughed.
“Welcome, nephew. You've arrived just in time.””
He pressed a button on the tablet.
A red light began blinking beside Anna's chair.
Adrian's expression changed.
“What is that?””
Vincent smiled.
“A little insurance policy.””
May you like
The light blinked faster.
And Anna began screaming.
