Chapter 5: The Money Had Disappeared

Daniel asked the bank officer to repeat herself.

“The money has already been released?””

“Yes, sir. The loan was approved six weeks ago. The funds were transferred to an account belonging to Grant-Hayes Property Holdings.””

“How much?””

“Six hundred thousand dollars.””

Daniel gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.

“Where is the money now?””

“We're investigating the transfers. I cannot disclose every detail over an unsecured call, but I can tell you that most of the funds have moved through several accounts.””

“Whose accounts?””

“That's part of the investigation.””

I watched my son struggle to keep his voice steady.

“Did I personally authorize this loan?””

“Your electronic signature appears on the agreement.””

“That's not what I asked. Did I authorize it?””

There was a pause.

“We have reason to believe the signature may have been used without proper authorization.””

Daniel looked at me, his eyes wide.

Patricia continued, “We would like you to visit the bank tomorrow morning with identification and any relevant correspondence. Please do not delete emails or alter documents related to this transaction.””

“I understand.””

“One more thing, Mr. Hayes. Until this matter is reviewed, please avoid signing any new documents connected to the company.””

The call ended.

Daniel stood motionless, his phone hanging at his side.

Six hundred thousand dollars.

A loan he didn't remember authorizing.

A company he didn't know existed until that afternoon.

And his wife, who had apparently helped arrange everything.

I touched his arm.

“Sit down.””

He obeyed.

For the first time since he'd arrived home, he looked like the little boy who used to come to me when the world frightened him.

“Mom, what if they think I stole the money?””

“Then we show them the truth.””

“What if the bank takes our house?””

“We find out what the documents actually say before we assume anything.””

“What if Michael has been using my name for months?””

I took a breath.

“Then we establish what he did, preserve the evidence, and let the proper people investigate.””

Daniel stared at his hands.

“I trusted him with everything.””

“I know.””

“He was at our wedding. He came to Dad's funeral. He helped me when I started the business.””

I remembered Michael standing beside Daniel's grave, one hand resting on my son's shoulder.

At the time, I had been grateful that Daniel had such a loyal friend.

Now I wondered how much of that loyalty had been an act.

From the living room, Vanessa called out.

“Daniel, I need you!””

He didn't move.

“Daniel!””

She appeared in the kitchen doorway, holding her stomach.

“I feel dizzy.””

My instincts immediately took over.

“Sit down, Vanessa.””

She sank onto a chair, breathing quickly.

“Something is wrong. I can feel it.””

Daniel stood at once.

“Do we need to call your doctor?””

She looked at him, and tears slid down her cheeks.

“Would you even care if something happened to me?””

He froze.

I saw the familiar guilt beginning to work on him.

Then he looked at her torn blouse, the papers on the table, and the security camera above the bookshelf.

“Your health matters,” he said.

“But it doesn't change what happened today.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You're choosing your mother over your own wife.””

“I'm choosing not to ignore the evidence.””

She pushed herself to her feet.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed for you!””

“What have you sacrificed, Vanessa?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then she pointed at me.

“She's been poisoning you against me since the day I met you!””

I remained seated.

“No, dear. I've spent the past three weeks cooking your meals, washing your dishes, and helping you prepare for the baby. You spent those same three weeks trying to get my house.””

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

“You think you're so innocent?””

“I know I didn't sign those papers.””

She turned toward Daniel.

“If you let her bring lawyers into this, our child will grow up in a broken home.””

Daniel's face twisted with pain.

“Our child?””

“Yes! Your child!””

He looked at her for a long moment.

“Is the baby mine?””

The question silenced the kitchen.

Vanessa's hand flew to her mouth.

I had heard Michael's words on the recording. So had Daniel. Neither of us could pretend the question hadn't been waiting for an answer.

“Tell me the truth,” Daniel said.

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“Not now.””

“Why not now?””

“Because I'm eight months pregnant! Because I'm terrified! Because you're making me answer questions while I'm in this condition!””

Daniel stepped back.

“I've spent the last eight months believing we were building a family together.””

“We are!””

“With Michael?””

She started crying.

Daniel's face crumpled.

He turned away before she could see it.

I wanted to comfort him, but I stayed in my chair. This was a moment he had to survive without asking me to make it easier.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“I need to lie down.””

She walked toward the hallway, one hand pressed against her belly.

As she passed the living room, I noticed her glance toward the bookshelf.

Toward the camera.

Then she disappeared into the bedroom and shut the door.

Daniel remained in the kitchen.

After several minutes, he whispered, “Mom, do you think the baby is mine?””

I couldn't give him the answer he wanted.

“I think we need the truth.””

He nodded, wiping his eyes with the heel of his hand.

Then he opened his phone again and examined the loan documents.

“I don't understand something.””

“What is it?””

“The company was registered four months ago. But the loan agreement says the bank approved it six weeks ago. Michael's email says the funds were intended for property investments.””

“Could there have been a legitimate investment?””

“Possibly. But there's no property listed in the documents. Just a company account and a series of transfers.””

He scrolled further.

Then he stopped.

“What now?”” I asked.

His finger hovered over a transaction record.

“Mom, look at this.””

The bank statement listed an outgoing transfer of $180,000 to a company called Silver Oak Consulting.

The date was five weeks earlier.

A second transfer, for $220,000, had gone to an account in another state.

And a third transfer of $95,000 had been made to an account whose beneficiary name was partially obscured in the copy.

Daniel enlarged the page.

The name became visible.

Vanessa Miller.

Her maiden name.

“She took the money,” he whispered.

“Some of it, at least.””

He searched for the remaining transfers, but the file contained no complete record.

Then he found an email attachment labeled *Collateral Verification — Margaret Hayes*.

The document included a copy of my property deed, a valuation report, and a letter supposedly written by me.

I read the letter twice.

It claimed that I had voluntarily offered my home as security for the business loan and authorized the bank to proceed without further consultation.

The signature at the bottom was mine.

Or, more precisely, it was an imitation of mine.

My stomach turned.

Someone had taken my private information and assembled a convincing fraud.

But the last page was worse.

It contained a scanned copy of my driver's license.

I had never given Vanessa permission to use it for anything financial.

“Where did she get this?”” Daniel asked.

I remembered the day Vanessa had helped me organize a drawer in my guest room. She'd asked to see my identification while filling out a medical form for the household emergency contacts.

I'd handed it to her without thinking.

I felt sick.

Then Daniel noticed a handwritten note attached to the file.

It was brief, but the writing was unmistakable.

Michael's.

*Once Margaret is out of the house, complete the transfer. Daniel won't question anything if Vanessa handles the explanation.*

Daniel read it twice.

Then he looked toward the bedroom door.

His voice was almost inaudible.

“She knew.””

I didn't answer.

He didn't need me to.

He walked to the living room, opened the security application, and began reviewing the day's footage again.

A minute later, he called my name.

“Mom, come here.””

I joined him.

He had paused the recording on a frame showing Vanessa beside the coffee table.

She was holding the folder, but her other hand was reaching into the pocket of her cardigan.

“What is she doing?”” I asked.

Daniel zoomed in.

A small black device was visible between her fingers.

He replayed the next few seconds.

Vanessa placed the device under the coffee table, adjusted its position, and returned to the folder.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“That's a recording device.””

My mouth went dry.

“Why would she need one if the house already had cameras?””

He replayed the footage again.

This time, he noticed the small red light blinking on the device.

Then he looked at me.

“Mom, I think she was recording us, too.””

Before either of us could investigate further, a sharp sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Then Vanessa's voice, low and urgent.

“Michael? You need to come back. They've seen the documents.””

Daniel and I exchanged a look.

May you like

She was on the phone.

And she had no idea we could hear her.
