Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

"Eleanor, darling. It's been a very long time.""

I knew that voice.

I had heard it in childhood bedrooms, hospital corridors, and the quiet kitchen of the house where I grew up.

It was my mother's voice.

I turned toward the corridor.

A woman stepped into the light.

Her silver hair was shorter than I remembered. Her face was thinner, and she leaned slightly on a wooden walking stick.

But there was no mistaking her.

Margaret Whitmore.

My mother.

The woman whose funeral I had attended ten years earlier.

I couldn't move.

"Mom?""

She smiled.

"Hello, sweetheart.""

I stared at her.

"You're dead.""

"Apparently, that's what everyone was told.""

I looked at Daniel.

He lowered his eyes.

"You knew?""

He nodded.

"Mom, I can explain.""

"Not now.""

My mother approached slowly.

"I suppose I owe you an explanation.""

I almost laughed.

"An explanation? You let me bury an empty coffin. You let me believe my son was dead. You watched me mourn my husband for eight years.""

Her smile disappeared.

"Your husband made some very poor decisions.""

I stepped forward.

"Don't you dare talk about Richard.""

"He was going to destroy this family.""

"He was trying to expose corruption.""

"He was trying to expose me.""

The words landed like a physical blow.

I stared at her.

"You arranged the accident?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at Daniel.

"Did you tell her everything?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not yet.""

My mother sighed.

"Then perhaps I should.""

She pulled a chair away from the wall and sat down.

"Your father built a successful aviation maintenance company. When he died, I inherited the business. Thomas handled the financial operations, and you pursued your federal career.""

I remained standing.

"Get to the point.""

"Your father had discovered that several airline contractors were submitting false maintenance invoices. He wanted to expose them, but he also knew the investigation would destroy our business.""

"So you continued the fraud?""

"I protected what your father built.""

"By putting passengers at risk?""

She looked at me coldly.

"People like you always believe the world is divided into good people and bad people. It isn't.""

I shook my head.

"Eleven passengers were injured on Flight 417.""

"Eleven people survived.""

"Because the pilots managed to land.""

"Exactly.""

I stared at her.

She was speaking about injured passengers as though they were figures on a balance sheet.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Grandma, stop.""

She turned toward him.

"You should be grateful I kept you alive.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You didn't keep me alive. You made me disappear.""

My mother looked back at me.

"Daniel discovered the original maintenance records seven years ago. He was helping Richard investigate the financial transfers.""

"Why did you tell us he died?""

"Because he refused to cooperate.""

Daniel's voice broke.

"You arranged the boating accident.""

My mother sighed.

"It was supposed to be a warning.""

I looked at her.

"What happened?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Someone sabotaged the boat. I managed to escape before it sank. Thomas found me afterward.""

"And he helped you?""

"He helped me disappear. He told everyone I was dead because he thought Grandma would have me killed if she knew I survived.""

My mother tapped her walking stick against the floor.

"Thomas was always sentimental.""

I looked at her.

"And Richard?""

Her expression hardened.

"Richard found the original financial records. He threatened to take them to federal investigators.""

"Did you arrange his murder?""

"I gave Thomas instructions to recover the documents.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

She looked directly at me.

"Yes.""

The word was quiet.

Almost casual.

I felt something inside me break.

"Your own son-in-law.""

"He betrayed the family.""

"He loved you!""

"He was going to put me in prison.""

"And you killed him?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Daniel.

"Tell her what happened after the boat accident.""

Daniel hesitated.

"Grandma made me contact Thomas. She said if I stayed hidden, she would leave Mom alone.""

My mother smiled faintly.

"It was an arrangement.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Then Richard died. I wanted to tell Mom the truth, but Thomas said Grandma had people watching the house.""

I looked at my son.

"Why didn't you come to me?""

His eyes filled.

"Because I was afraid they'd kill you.""

I wanted to embrace him.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions.

But there was one thing I needed to know first.

"Where is Thomas?""

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

"He's alive.""

My mother suddenly stood.

"Don't be ridiculous.""

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small recording device.

"Thomas contacted me yesterday. He told me Grandma had arranged everything, including the false death certificate. He wanted to help me expose her.""

My mother's face changed.

"You stole company property.""

"No," Daniel answered.

"I kept evidence.""

He pressed a button.

A familiar voice filled the empty terminal.

Thomas.

"If anything happens to me, make sure Eleanor gets the original account records. Mother ordered Richard's death, and Margaret Sloan helped cover it up.""

My mother lunged toward him.

"Turn that off!""

Daniel stepped backward.

The recording continued.

"James Carter was instructed to remove the maintenance records. Peter Lawson was supposed to take the blame. And Arthur Bennett was supposed to disappear.""

The recording stopped.

My mother stood motionless.

Then she looked at me.

"You've always been stubborn, Eleanor.""

I raised my chin.

"And you've always underestimated me.""

I pressed the emergency signal hidden inside my jacket.

A second later, Sergeant Grant and two federal officers entered the terminal.

My mother looked toward the exits.

There was nowhere to go.

Grant approached her.

"Margaret Whitmore, we need you to come with us.""

My mother stared at me.

"You would arrest your own mother?""

I looked at her.

"You stopped being my mother when you decided my family was expendable.""

Grant took her arm.

But as the officers escorted her away, she leaned toward me.

"You're celebrating too early, sweetheart.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

She smiled.

"Ask Arthur Bennett what happened to your father.""

Then she was gone.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

"Mom, we need to get out of here.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He glanced at the recording device.

"Because there's another name on the original maintenance authorization.""

I waited.

He swallowed.

"Richard Whitmore.""

May you like

My dead husband.

And according to the document Daniel was holding, Richard had authorized the very maintenance changes that caused the emergency aboard Flight 417.
