Chapter 7: The Secret Waiting at the Old Studio
“Vanessa isn't the only one coming.””
My father's words kept echoing in my ears long after the call disconnected.
I stood beneath the runway lights, holding my phone so tightly that my fingers hurt. The audience was whispering. Rebecca Harrison was trying to restore order. Vanessa remained at the foot of the stage, wearing the expression of a woman who had finally revealed a secret and was already regretting it.
But none of that mattered anymore.
My father was at the old Miller studio.
And someone was coming for him.
“Emily?”” Rebecca touched my shoulder.
“What happened?””
“My father found the contract. He's at my mother's old studio, and he thinks someone is coming after him.””
Rebecca immediately turned toward the security director.
“I need you to contact local authorities and arrange a welfare check at that address.””
Vanessa suddenly went pale.
“Don't you dare.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because this is a private family matter!””
“You just announced a serious allegation about a missing design collection in front of hundreds of people,” Rebecca replied.
“It stopped being private when you chose to make it public.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What are you afraid they'll find?””
She didn't answer.
Instead, she grabbed Madison's wrist.
“We're leaving.””
Madison pulled away.
“No.””
Vanessa stared at her daughter as though she'd slapped her.
“What did you say?””
“I said no.”” Madison's voice shook, but she remained where she was.
“I'm tired of being told what to say.””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
“Then explain it to me!”” Madison cried.
“You told me the designs were yours. You told me Emily's mother had given them to you. You told me I deserved to win because I was the one who could build a future with them.””
“You do deserve to win.””
“Then why are you so frightened?””
Vanessa raised her hand.
For one terrible second, I thought she was going to strike her own daughter.
Madison flinched.
The audience saw it.
So did the security officers.
Vanessa slowly lowered her hand.
“This is your fault, Emily,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“You destroyed my dress. You stole my mother's designs. You threatened my father. But somehow, it's still my fault?””
She leaned closer.
“You don't understand what your mother did to this family.””
“Then tell me.””
Her lips trembled.
Before she could answer, Rebecca's phone rang. She listened for several seconds, then covered the microphone.
“Emily, your father is still answering his phone. The authorities are on their way.””
Relief rushed through me so quickly that my knees weakened.
“Can I speak to him?””
Rebecca handed me her phone.
I dialed my father's number again.
This time, he answered.
“Dad!””
“Emily, thank God.””
His voice sounded strained. Behind him, I heard the faint metallic rattle of a door.
“Where are you?””
“Inside the old studio. I locked myself in the office.””
“Who is there?””
“I don't know. Someone came through the front entrance.””
My heart hammered against my ribs.
“Get out of the building.””
“I can't. The back exit is blocked.””
“Dad, please!””
“Listen to me.”” His voice softened.
“I found the original contract. Your mother hid a copy inside the lining of her old cutting table. It contains the signatures we need.””
“Whose signatures?””
He hesitated.
“Mine. Vanessa's. And someone else's.””
“Who?””
Before he could answer, a heavy bang shook the phone's microphone.
My father cursed under his breath.
“Emily, I have to go.””
“No! Dad, don't hang up!””
“I love you. Remember that.””
The call ended.
I stood frozen, staring at Rebecca's phone.
Vanessa had heard every word.
She was no longer pretending to be angry.
She looked terrified.
“Who else signed the contract?”” I demanded.
She shook her head.
“I don't know what he's talking about.””
“Stop lying!””
“I said I don't know!””
For the first time, her voice broke.
Then Madison whispered something that silenced us both.
“Mom, you told me Uncle Robert destroyed the original.””
Vanessa spun around.
“Madison, shut your mouth!””
I turned toward my stepsister.
“Uncle Robert?””
Madison covered her mouth.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I wasn't supposed to say anything.””
“Who is Uncle Robert?””
Vanessa seized her daughter's arm.
“We are leaving now.””
Two security officers stepped between them.
“Mrs. Walker, you'll need to remain here until we clarify the situation.””
Vanessa stared at them, then at me.
“You think you've won something today?””
I looked down at the reconstructed gown I'd spent six desperate hours creating.
“No,” I said quietly.
“I think I'm finally finding out what happened.””
She leaned close enough that I could smell her expensive perfume.
“When you learn the truth about your mother, you may wish you'd left that sketchbook in the trash.””
Then she turned away.
I wanted to believe she was bluffing.
I wanted to believe that my mother had been exactly who I'd always thought she was: a gifted designer who loved me, protected me, and left behind beautiful things.
But my father's fear, Vanessa's threats, and the mysterious third signature had created a crack in that memory.
And through it, something darker was beginning to emerge.
Rebecca's phone rang again.
She answered, listened, and then looked directly at me.
“The officers have reached the studio.””
I held my breath.
“Is my father safe?””
Rebecca listened for another moment.
Then her expression changed.
“They found Daniel's truck outside,” she said.
“The front door is open.””
My stomach dropped.
“And your father?””
May you like
She lowered the phone.
“He's missing.””
