Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Door
The flash drive sat on the kitchen table for ten minutes.
Nobody touched it.
Not me.
Not my father.
Not even Madison, who had arrived after my father called her.
It felt like opening it would change everything.
Maybe because we all knew it would.
Finally, Madison spoke.
“So we’re just going to stare at it?””
My father looked at her.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
She crossed her arms.
“You’ve said that a lot.””
He didn’t respond.
She looked at me.
“I’m staying.””
I nodded.
My father sighed.
“Fine.””
He connected the flash drive to his laptop.
A single folder appeared.
No name.
No label.
Just a date.
*September 14.*
The day Hawthorne Ridge opened the Bennett Science Center.
My father clicked it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Financial records.
Emails.
Photos.
Videos.
My hands moved to my mouth.
“This is everything?””
My father shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what is it?””
“Everything Richard wanted people to never find.””
The first video opened.
The quality was old.
Security footage.
A room inside Hawthorne Ridge.
A younger version of my father stood across from Richard.
Evelyn was there too.
They were arguing.
We turned up the volume.
Richard’s younger voice filled the room.
“You don’t understand how this works, Charles.””
My father in the video responded:
“I understand exactly what you did.””
Richard laughed.
“You think a few missing payments matter?””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You stole from students.””
Richard smiled.
“And you built a system where nobody would notice.””
The video paused.
Madison looked shocked.
“My grandmother recorded this?””
My father shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Nobody answered.
We kept watching.
Richard leaned closer to Evelyn.
“You should be careful what you expose.””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“I’m not afraid of you.””
Richard smiled.
“You should be.””
The screen went black.
The room was silent.
Then another file appeared automatically.
A video.
Recorded years later.
My father clicked it.
This time, the image was clearer.
A private meeting room.
Richard.
A school board member.
And someone else.
Someone sitting with their back toward the camera.
Madison leaned closer.
“Who is that?””
Nobody knew.
Then the person turned slightly.
Just enough.
My father stopped breathing.
Because he recognized them.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who is it?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“It can’t be.””
I looked at the screen.
“Who?””
My father stood slowly.
The color drained from his face.
“That person…”
He pointed at the screen.
“Was supposed to be dead.””
The video continued.
The unknown person spoke.
And the moment we heard the voice, my father grabbed the laptop.
Because there was no doubt.
It was someone from our family.
Someone who had been missing for seventeen years.
Someone whose name I had never heard before.
The person said:
“Charles Bennett still thinks he saved Emma.””
The screen froze.
May you like
Then one final message appeared.
*EVELYN WAS NEVER THE ONLY ONE WHO DISAPPEARED.*
