Chapter 11: The Daughter They Tried to Hide

I didn’t speak during the drive home.

Neither did my father.

The silence between us was different now.

Before, it was the silence of secrets.

Now it was the silence after secrets had been exposed.

When we arrived, I went straight to the living room.

My father followed.

“Emma.””

I turned around.

“Tell me everything.””

He stopped.

“I need you to understand something.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I don’t need another warning. I don’t need another promise that you were protecting me.””

He looked away.

“I need the truth.””

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he sat down.

And for the first time in my life, my father looked old.

“When Evelyn and I created the foundation, we wanted to change Hawthorne Ridge.””

He stared at his hands.

“Not with buildings. Not with donations. With opportunities.””

I listened.

“We created anonymous scholarships. We helped students who had talent but no money.””

“That sounds good.””

“It was.””

His expression darkened.

“Until someone realized the foundation controlled millions of dollars.””

“Richard.””

He nodded.

“Richard managed the financial accounts.””

“So why didn’t you report him?””

My father looked ashamed.

“Because I needed proof.””

“And while you searched for proof?””

“Evelyn found it first.””

I waited.

“She discovered documents showing years of stolen funds.””

“Then she was safe.””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“She wasn’t.””

My father looked at me.

“Richard knew she found out.””

My stomach tightened.

“He threatened her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she leave alone?””

My father looked down.

“Because she wasn’t the only person he threatened.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Me?””

He nodded.

“You were a baby.””

The room became quiet.

“Richard sent a message.””

“What did it say?””

My father hesitated.

Then:

“Give up the investigation, or your family loses everything.””

I stared at him.

“So you stopped?””

“No.””

His answer surprised me.

“I moved Evelyn away from the spotlight.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“Then why did everyone think she left?””

My father looked away.

“Because Richard made sure people believed she was responsible for the missing money.””

I thought about Madison.

Her grandmother.

Her anger.

Her entire family believing mine destroyed theirs.

“She lost everything.””

My father nodded.

“I know.””

“Did you ever tell people the truth?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

I laughed quietly.

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

He accepted it.

“I couldn’t.””

That honesty hurt more than an excuse.

My father reached into his pocket.

He pulled out an old key.

“I kept this for seventeen years.””

“What is it?””

“A storage box.””

“Where?””

“Hawthorne Ridge.””

My eyes widened.

“You still have something there?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

He looked at the key.

“Evidence.””

Before I could respond, someone knocked on the door.

Again.

My father immediately stood.

Not surprised.

Prepared.

When he opened it, nobody was there.

Only a package.

Small.

Black.

With my name written across the top.

My father picked it up.

His face changed.

“What?””

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a note.

I read the handwriting.

It was Evelyn’s.

*Emma, if you are reading this, it means Charles finally told you enough to be dangerous.*

My father froze.

I looked at him.

“Enough to be dangerous?””

He didn’t answer.

I continued reading.

*The truth is not hidden in the past. It is still happening now.*

My hands shook.

May you like

Then I read the final line.

*Someone inside Hawthorne Ridge is still working with Richard Vale.*
