Chapter 9: The Secret Written in My Birth Certificate

The gun pointed directly at my chest.

Nathaniel moved instinctively.

“Victoria, put it down.””

She laughed.

“Still protecting your precious twin?””

“She's innocent.””

“None of us are innocent, Nathaniel.””

Detective Miller stood beside her, holding the original trust documents.

He looked uncomfortable.

“Victoria, we should leave.””

She turned toward him.

“Not yet.””

“We have what we came for.””

“No. We have part of what we came for.””

Victoria looked at me.

“Rose, do you know why your birthday matters?””

I couldn't speak.

Grace stepped forward.

“Victoria, please. Don't involve her.””

Victoria struck her across the face with the back of her hand.

“Be quiet!””

Grace stumbled.

I moved toward her.

“Don't touch my mother!””

Victoria smiled.

“There she is. The brave little maid.””

Nathaniel shifted his weight.

“Listen to me. Whatever Charles promised you, you can still walk away.””

Victoria laughed.

“Charles? You still think he's in charge?””

Nathaniel frowned.

“He arranged everything.””

“He arranged the marriage. He arranged the kidnapping. But he didn't create the inheritance.””

She reached into her jacket and pulled out another document.

“Your father created it.””

Nathaniel stared at the paper.

“What is that?””

“Your father's final will.””

Grace looked horrified.

“Where did you get that?””

Victoria smiled.

“From the person who helped Richard write it.””

She handed it to Nathaniel.

He read the first page.

Then his expression changed.

The will contained a clause naming Rose Carter as the primary beneficiary of a separate private trust.

Not Nathaniel.

Me.

My name appeared in bold letters.

*ROSE CARTER — SOLE BENEFICIARY.*

I shook my head.

“That can't be right.””

Victoria nodded.

“It is.””

Nathaniel looked confused.

“Why would our father leave everything to Rose?””

“Because he knew Nathaniel would inherit the company through the public family trust. But he wanted to control the private fortune himself.””

Grace spoke quietly.

“He wanted Rose to remain hidden until she turned twenty-eight.””

Victoria nodded.

“Exactly. Because at twenty-eight, the private trust becomes active.””

I looked at the document.

“How much?””

Victoria smiled.

“Eight billion dollars.””

The warehouse seemed to tilt.

Eight billion.

I had spent most of my adult life working two jobs, struggling to pay rent, and saving money for groceries.

Now someone was telling me I was the beneficiary of an eight-billion-dollar fortune.

But I didn't feel rich.

I felt sick.

“Why would my father leave me money if he wanted me hidden?””

Grace stepped forward.

“Because he wanted you dependent on him.””

I turned.

“What?””

“He planned to reveal your identity when you turned twenty-eight. But only after making sure you would sign over the trust to him.””

Nathaniel looked at the will again.

“Richard died twelve years ago. How could he control what happened after?””

Grace answered.

“Because Charles and Victoria were supposed to manage everything until the activation date.””

Victoria laughed.

“Very good, Grace.””

She turned toward me.

“Tomorrow, your twenty-eighth birthday arrives. You sign the transfer documents, and I take control of the entire fortune.””

I stared at her.

“Why would I sign anything for you?””

“Because I have something you want.””

She pointed toward Eleanor.

“Her life.””

Nathaniel's face hardened.

“Let her go.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Not until Rose agrees.””

I looked at Eleanor.

Her face was bruised, but she was still trying to remain calm.

“Don't sign anything, sweetheart,” she whispered.

Victoria pressed the gun harder against her head.

“Be quiet!””

I stepped forward.

“Stop hurting her. I'll listen.””

Nathaniel turned toward me.

“Rose, don't.””

I looked at him.

“We can't let her kill Eleanor.””

Victoria smiled.

“See? Your sister understands how this works.””

She tossed a thick folder onto the floor.

“Read the agreement.””

I opened it.

The first page transferred all rights to the private trust.

The second page transferred control of the Callaway holding company.

The third page contained a clause that made my blood run cold.

The beneficiary agrees to waive all claims against the Callaway family and acknowledges that all previous guardianship and custody arrangements were lawful.

I looked at Grace.

“What's this?””

She closed her eyes.

“It's the document they wanted you to sign when you were a child.””

I looked up.

“They wanted me to give up my rights?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Grace's voice trembled.

“Because the original hospital records prove you and Nathaniel were taken illegally. If you sign this agreement, you surrender the right to challenge the adoption, the custody arrangements, and the inheritance.””

Nathaniel grabbed the folder.

“She's not signing.””

Victoria shrugged.

“Then Eleanor dies.””

A sudden noise came from above us.

A metal door slammed.

Marcus looked toward the warehouse ceiling.

“Movement!””

Detective Miller turned.

That was all Nathaniel needed.

He lunged.

Miller fired.

The bullet struck a metal support beam.

Marcus tackled the detective, and both men crashed against a stack of wooden crates.

Victoria swung her gun toward Nathaniel.

I grabbed Eleanor's chair and pulled it sideways.

The shot went into the floor.

“ROSE!”” Grace screamed.

Victoria turned toward me.

I threw the folder at her face.

She stumbled.

Nathaniel seized her wrist.

The gun dropped.

Eleanor kicked it away.

Marcus finally restrained Miller.

But Victoria was faster than anyone expected.

She pulled a small knife from her boot and slashed Nathaniel's arm.

He fell against the wall.

“NO!””

I rushed toward him.

Victoria grabbed the gun from the floor and pointed it at us.

“Everybody stop!””

Then a loud voice echoed from the entrance.

“POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!””

A group of armed officers flooded the warehouse.

Victoria looked toward the exit.

Then she smiled.

She lowered the gun.

And dropped it.

“Take her,” Nathaniel said through clenched teeth.

Two officers handcuffed Victoria.

Miller was dragged away separately.

Eleanor was freed.

I rushed to Nathaniel.

“Are you hurt?””

“It's just a cut.””

Blood ran down his sleeve.

I pressed my hand against it.

He looked at me.

“You saved my life.””

“You saved mine first.””

For a moment, we smiled.

Then Grace approached, holding the folder.

“Rose, there's something you need to understand.””

I turned.

She pointed to the final page of the agreement.

A handwritten note appeared beneath Richard's signature.

It was dated three days before his death.

The private trust shall only become active if Rose Carter is alive, unmarried, and has never knowingly entered into an agreement with any member of the Callaway family.

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Grace looked toward Nathaniel.

“It means Richard anticipated that someone might try to manipulate her into marriage.””

Nathaniel looked confused.

“Why would marriage matter?””

Grace slowly removed another photograph from her pocket.

It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood Richard Callaway.

The woman wasn't Grace.

I recognized her from the family photographs in Nathaniel's childhood home.

His adoptive mother.

The woman he had believed was his biological mother.

I stared at the photograph.

“Who is that?””

Grace's voice dropped.

“Her name was Margaret Callaway.””

Nathaniel went pale.

“That's my mother.””

Grace shook her head.

“No, Nathaniel. Margaret wasn't your mother.””

She turned the photograph around.

On the back were five handwritten words.

The third child survived the birth.

I looked at her.

“Third child?””

Grace nodded.

“Richard told everyone there were only two babies.””

Nathaniel stared at the photograph.

“Mom, what are you saying?””

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

“Rose and Nathaniel weren't the only children I gave birth to.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“You had another baby?””

Grace nodded.

“A little girl.””

“Where is she?””

My mother looked directly at Victoria, who was being escorted toward the police vehicles.

Victoria suddenly stopped walking.

She turned toward us.

Then she began laughing.

“Now you finally understand.””

Nathaniel struggled to stand.

“Understand what?””

Victoria wiped a tear from her cheek.

“I'm not just your half-sister, Nathaniel.””

She looked at me.

“I'm the third baby.””

The warehouse fell silent.

Grace screamed.

“No! You can't be!””

Victoria smiled.

“Happy early birthday, Rose.””

Then she leaned toward the police officer holding her arm and whispered something.

The officer immediately released her.

He stepped aside.

And Victoria walked toward the exit.

Marcus raised his weapon.

“STOP!””

Victoria didn't turn around.

She simply lifted her hand.

A second police officer stepped into the doorway and pointed his gun at Marcus.

Nathaniel stared in disbelief.

“Who the hell are these people?””

Grace grabbed my wrist.

“Rose, run.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She stared at the two officers.

“Because the people protecting Victoria aren't police officers.””

May you like

Then the warehouse doors slammed shut.

And every light went out.
