Chapter 10: The Truth Behind Her Name
Nobody moved.
Vanessa’s words hung in the room like smoke.
“The one person who knows the truth about where Zoria came from.””
Zoria stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not because she had been caught.
Because something she had buried was finally being uncovered.
I stood.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“Tell us.””
Her lips trembled.
“I can’t.””
Zoria’s face changed.
After everything that happened, after every lie, that answer hurt the most.
“You can’t?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“It’s complicated.””
“No,” Zoria said quietly.
“It’s not complicated.””
Everyone looked at her.
“It’s either the truth or another secret.””
That sentence silenced the room.
Dr. Collins slowly closed the folder.
“I think this conversation should happen with complete honesty.””
Vanessa sat down.
For the first time, she looked tired.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just tired.
“When I met Daniel, I already had Madison.””
She looked at me.
“And you knew that.””
I nodded.
“I did.””
“But you didn’t know everything.””
My chest tightened.
“What don’t I know?””
Vanessa looked at Zoria.
“Your mother.””
Zoria froze.
The room became painfully quiet.
“My mother?””
Vanessa nodded.
“You were three years old when I met you.””
I felt confused.
Because that was true.
Zoria’s biological mother had passed away when she was young.
Or that was what we had always believed.
“She was my best friend,” Vanessa whispered.
Zoria looked at her.
“What?””
“Your mother and I grew up together.””
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“She was sick. She knew she wasn’t going to be there for you.””
I looked at Zoria.
She looked lost.
“She asked me to take care of you.””
Nobody spoke.
“She trusted me.””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“And I promised.””
Zoria whispered:
“Then why did you treat me like I was a burden?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Because there was no answer that could fix that.
“I don’t know.””
The honesty was devastating.
“I think…”
She stopped.
“I think I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Vanessa looked at Madison.
Then back at Zoria.
“That I could never love you the way your mother did.””
Zoria’s eyes filled.
“So you punished me?””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Zoria’s voice shook.
“You did.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I know.””
Dr. Collins quietly placed another document on the table.
“This explains the funding source.””
I looked down.
The transfer records showed an account created years earlier.
The owner was not Vanessa.
Not Ethan.
Not me.
The name was:
“Amelia Bennett Family Trust.””
Zoria touched the paper.
“Bennett?””
I swallowed.
“Your mother’s family.””
Dr. Collins nodded.
“Your biological mother’s parents established the trust before her death.””
Zoria stared.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because they didn’t know where you were.””
“What?””
I turned toward her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa went silent.
Then Madison spoke.
“Mom…”
Vanessa looked at her.
Madison’s eyes were filled with tears.
“You told me they abandoned her.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
And I knew.
There was another lie.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I changed the contact information.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You stopped her family from finding her?””
“I thought I was protecting her.””
“You stole her connection to her own family.””
Vanessa looked at Zoria.
“I was scared they would take you away.””
Zoria stood.
“And instead you made sure I had nobody.””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the truth.
For years, my daughter had been surrounded by people.
And somehow, she had been alone.
Dr. Collins gathered the papers.
“There is one more thing.””
I looked at her.
“What now?””
She hesitated.
“The trust has been searching for Zoria for years.””
Zoria looked confused.
“Searching?””
“Yes.””
Dr. Collins looked at the door.
“They recently found new information.””
My heart started pounding.
“What information?””
She opened her phone.
A photograph appeared.
A woman.
Older.
Holding a letter.
Zoria covered her mouth.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa whispered the answer.
May you like
And it changed everything.
“Your grandmother.””
