The Apron at Her Graduation / Chapter 8 / 14

Chapter 9: The Name on the Company

I read the document again.

Then again.

The name didn’t change.

Zoria Bennett.

Owner.

My first thought was confusion.

My second was fear.

Because Vanessa had spent months hiding this from us.

“Why is my daughter’s name on this?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“Because Vanessa wanted to protect it.””

“Protect it?””

I held up the paper.

“She emptied Zoria’s college fund and created a company without telling anyone.””

Ethan sighed.

“You need to understand the whole story.””

“I’m listening.””

He looked toward the house.

“Can we go somewhere private?””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You brought this here. You explain it here.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Fine.””

He opened the folder.

“Vanessa believed Zoria was going to receive a scholarship, but she also knew scholarships can change.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“She thought if Zoria had a business account, nobody could touch the money.””

I stared.

“Except she touched it.””

Ethan looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer bothered me.

Because it meant this wasn’t simple.

Vanessa had done something wrong.

But maybe the reason was different than I thought.

I went inside.

Vanessa was standing in the hallway.

She had heard everything.

“Tell me the truth.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to help her.””

“By lying?””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

She walked into the kitchen.

“Zoria was always talented.””

My daughter stood silently nearby.

Vanessa looked at her.

“I knew you would leave one day.””

Zoria’s face tightened.

“And that scared you?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because I knew I couldn’t stop you.””

Nobody spoke.

“So I tried to make sure you had something to come back to.””

Zoria laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“You destroyed my scholarship to help me?””

Vanessa looked down.

“No.””

That was the first time she admitted it.

“I got scared.””

The room became silent.

“I saw Madison struggling. I saw Ethan needing help. I saw bills piling up.””

She looked at me.

“And I made decisions I shouldn’t have.””

I nodded slowly.

“You made them for everyone except Zoria.””

Vanessa cried quietly.

“I know.””

It was the first apology.

But it wasn’t enough.

Not yet.

Because Zoria had lost trust.

And trust was harder to rebuild than money.

That afternoon, Dr. Collins arrived.

She had one final update.

“I reviewed the company documents.””

We all sat down.

“The company is legitimate.””

I looked confused.

“What?””

Dr. Collins nodded.

“Vanessa did create a structure using Zoria’s name.””

Zoria looked uncomfortable.

“But?””

Dr. Collins opened another file.

“But the original investment came from a source we didn’t expect.””

She turned the document around.

A transfer record appeared.

My eyes moved down the page.

The sender’s name made me freeze.

“Who is that?”” Zoria asked.

I couldn’t answer.

Because the name belonged to someone I had never heard of.

Someone who had apparently been supporting Zoria for years.

Dr. Collins spoke softly.

“The person who funded this account requested that their identity remain hidden.””

Zoria looked at me.

“Dad?””

I stared at the document.

Then at Vanessa.

Because Vanessa looked like she knew exactly who it was.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

“The one person who knows the truth about where Zoria came from.””
