Chapter 5: My Brother's Price

I didn't run toward Evan.

That was the first lesson the Navy had taught me about panic: the moment you moved without thinking, you gave someone else control of your decisions.

Instead, I slipped the brass key into the inner pocket of my dress and approached Admiral Mercer.

“Martin gave me something before he lost consciousness,” I said quietly.

“He says the original orders are stored in Locker 214 at Central Station.””

Mercer studied my face.

“What else did he tell you?””

“That my father signed the order that sent Daniel's team into the compromised corridor.””

The admiral's expression hardened.

“Did he provide evidence?””

“Not yet. He said the original records are in the locker.””

“Then we secure those records through the proper authorities.””

“And what happens if the evidence disappears before we get there?””

He didn't answer immediately.

I knew why.

Military investigations were governed by procedures for good reasons. Evidence had to be preserved. Chain of custody mattered. Accusations without verification could destroy innocent lives.

But I had also learned that procedures were only as trustworthy as the people following them.

“Admiral,” I said, “someone has already tried to kill Martin. If my father knows about the locker, he won't wait for a warrant.””

Mercer glanced toward the ballroom.

“Then we'll ensure the relevant investigators know about it before anyone can interfere.””

He spoke into his phone, giving precise instructions to an officer assigned to the investigation. I listened carefully as he requested preservation of the station's security footage and immediate protection for the evidence locker.

Then I noticed something.

Evan was gone.

The police officer he'd been speaking to stood near the elevator, looking down at a small silver object in his gloved hand.

My flash drive.

My stomach dropped.

“Admiral, I need to speak to that officer.””

Mercer followed my gaze.

“Stay here.””

He crossed the corridor and introduced himself. The officer immediately straightened.

I couldn't hear their entire conversation, but I saw the officer's expression change as Mercer pointed toward me.

A moment later, they returned together.

“Captain Harrington,” the officer said, “your brother claims you asked him to surrender this device to the authorities.””

“That is a lie.””

“He also says the drive contains stolen corporate information.””

“Then he should have no objection to its contents being examined by investigators.””

The officer glanced at the admiral.

“That's what we're arranging.””

“Where is Evan now?”” I asked.

“He said he needed to check on your parents.””

I almost laughed.

Evan had spent the entire evening mocking my service, threatening me, and trying to take the evidence. Now he was pretending to be the responsible sibling.

“Please don't let him leave the hotel,” I said.

“He may be involved in the attack on Martin.””

The officer nodded and spoke into his radio.

Mercer lowered his voice.

“Captain, I need to ask you something. Before tonight, did you suspect your father had any connection to the incident?””

“I suspected his company might have supplied defective equipment. I didn't know about the operational orders.””

“Why didn't you report your suspicions earlier?””

“Because I wanted proof before I accused my father of helping cause Daniel's death.””

Mercer looked at me for a long moment.

“That's understandable. But from this point forward, you cannot investigate this alone.””

“I understand.””

“No, Caroline. I need you to really understand. Whoever is doing this has access to information, money, and people who can move through secure locations. You have already become a target.””

I looked down at the torn red silk hanging from my shoulders.

“Then perhaps it's time they understood that I'm not hiding anymore.””

Before Mercer could respond, a scream echoed from the ballroom.

We rushed back through the doors.

Celeste stood beside the stage, gripping our mother's arm. Dad was nowhere in sight.

“Where's my father?”” I demanded.

Celeste spun toward me.

“He went to the private lounge. He said the police were humiliating him and he needed to speak to his lawyers.””

“And Evan?””

“I don't know!””

She was crying now, but I couldn't tell whether it was fear or anger.

“Caroline, what have you done?””

I stared at her.

“What have I done?””

“You've destroyed everything! Dad's retirement, his reputation, the company—”

“Someone was shot tonight.””

“Martin Cole was a disgruntled employee!””

“He was a witness.””

“To what?””

I hesitated.

Celeste stepped closer.

“To what, Caroline?””

I watched her carefully.

For years, she had repeated whatever our father told her. But she had never been particularly good at hiding information when she was frightened.

“Did Dad tell you anything about the Arabian Sea attack?””

Her face changed.

It was subtle.

A brief tightening around her mouth. A glance toward the ballroom's side entrance.

But I saw it.

“You knew,” I whispered.

“No.””

“You knew something happened.””

“Everyone knows something happened. The news covered it.””

“I'm not talking about the attack itself. I'm talking about the equipment. The orders. Daniel.””

Celeste released our mother's arm.

“Don't say that name.””

The words struck harder than a slap.

“Why?””

“Because I don't want to hear about your dead friend!””

“Then tell me why you recognized him in that photograph.””

She stared at me.

For a second, she looked genuinely terrified.

Then she leaned close enough that only I could hear her.

“Because I saw him at Dad's house three weeks ago.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“He came through the back entrance. Dad told me it was a confidential business meeting. He made me promise not to tell anyone.””

“Did Daniel speak to you?””

“No. He barely looked at me.””

“Who was with him?””

Celeste shook her head.

“I don't know. But when I went downstairs later, I heard Dad arguing with Evan.””

“What did they say?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Evan said the money had already been transferred. Dad told him it wasn't enough anymore.””

My mind raced.

Money.

Defective equipment.

A witness threatened inside a hotel.

And Daniel, officially dead, meeting privately with my father.

“What money?”” I asked.

Celeste grabbed my wrist.

“I don't know! But Caroline, there's something else. The night before this gala, I overheard Dad on the phone.””

“What did he say?””

She swallowed.

“He said, 'If Caroline opens the locker, everyone will know what really happened to Daniel.''”

The ballroom seemed to tilt around me.

Before I could ask another question, a uniformed officer hurried toward us.

“Captain Harrington, we have a situation.””

“What now?””

“Your brother has left the building.””

“How?””

“He presented a security credential and claimed he was acting on behalf of the company.””

Admiral Mercer joined us.

“Did you stop him?””

The officer shook his head.

“He was already in his vehicle when we confirmed his identity.””

I pulled out my phone and called Evan.

He answered on the fourth ring.

“What do you want?”” he snapped.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere you can't cause any more trouble.””

“Did you take my evidence?””

He laughed.

“You should have handed it over when Dad asked.””

“Evan, listen to me. Martin is dying. Daniel is alive. Whatever you think Dad promised you, it isn't worth this.””

Silence.

Then my brother spoke in a voice I barely recognized.

“You still don't understand, Caroline.””

“Then explain it.””

“I didn't sell you out because I wanted the money.””

“Why did you do it?””

His answer came so quietly that I almost missed it.

“Because Daniel told me what you did twenty months ago.””

My blood turned to ice.

“What are you talking about?””

“You left someone behind.””

The call ended.

I stood motionless, the phone pressed against my ear.

Admiral Mercer watched me carefully.

“What did he say?””

I lowered the phone.

“He thinks I abandoned someone during the evacuation.””

The admiral's jaw tightened.

“Captain, I was there. You went back into that vessel when everyone else had been ordered to withdraw.””

“Then why would Daniel tell him that?””

Mercer didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

May you like

Because somewhere between the burning ship, the official memorial, and the five years of lies my family had told about me, someone had rewritten the truth.

And my brother believed every word.
