Chapter 8

Daniel left the hospital only after Ethan was stable.

Not alone.

Officer Collins drove behind him.

Another patrol car met them at Daniel’s house.

The front door was unlocked.

Daniel knew he had locked it.

He stopped on the porch.

Collins noticed.

“What?”

“I locked this door.”

The officer moved ahead.

“Stay here.”

Police entered first.

They cleared the ground floor.

Then upstairs.

No Vanessa.

No intruder.

But the house had been searched.

Not robbed.

Searched.

Drawers open.

Closet doors wide.

Daniel’s office torn apart.

The black box was gone.

His laptop was still on the dining table.

The camera memory card was gone too.

Daniel stared at the empty spot where he had left the evidence.

“She came back.”

Collins nodded.

“Or someone did.”

Daniel went pale.

“The gun safe.”

They entered his office.

The safe door was open.

Daniel rushed forward.

His handgun was still there.

“So what did they want?”

Collins looked around.

“Evidence.”

Daniel felt sick.

Vanessa knew exactly what to remove.

The letters.

The recordings.

The camera card.

Anything that could destroy her.

Except Daniel had made one important mistake in her favor.

He had watched the camera footage on his laptop.

Temporary copies might still exist.

And Maria had installed the cameras.

Maybe she had cloud access.

Daniel called her.

This time she answered immediately.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Maria, are the cameras backed up online?”

“Yes.”

Daniel nearly collapsed with relief.

“You have access?”

“Yes.”

“Do not delete anything.”

“I would never.”

“Can you send the files to police?”

“Yes.”

Officer Collins took the phone.

While they spoke, Daniel called Michael again.

“Where are you?”

Michael gave an address.

Forty minutes away.

Daniel hesitated.

“I need to see what Rachel left you.”

Michael was silent.

Then, “Come tomorrow.”

“I can’t wait.”

“You waited three years.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t want to know.”

“That’s not fair.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Fair?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“My son is in the hospital.”

Silence.

“Ethan?”

“Yes.”

Michael’s tone changed.

“What happened?”

Daniel told him the shortest version.

When he mentioned Vanessa, Michael stopped interrupting.

Finally, he said, “Come.”

Daniel drove to Michael’s house with Collins following.

The house was small.

Quiet.

Michael opened the door before Daniel reached it.

He looked older.

More gray.

More tired.

For a moment, neither man moved.

Then Michael asked, “How is Ethan?”

“Stable.”

“And your daughter?”

“Safe at the hospital.”

Michael nodded.

“Come inside.”

There were photographs of Rachel everywhere.

Daniel had not seen some of them.

Rachel as a teenager.

Rachel at college.

Rachel holding Ethan.

Daniel’s throat tightened.

Michael noticed.

“She existed before you.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I know.”

“Sometimes I wondered.”

Daniel accepted the insult.

He had earned part of it.

Michael walked toward a desk.

He opened a drawer.

Removed a blue envelope.

Daniel stopped.

It was old.

Edges worn.

Rachel’s handwriting covered the front.

For Michael.

If Daniel never comes.

Daniel stared at those four words.

If Daniel never comes.

Michael handed him the envelope.

“I never opened it.”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

“She told me not to unless you failed to show up before her surgery.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I did.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you open it?”

Michael looked away.

“Because she died before I could think straight.”

He sat.

“Then I hated you.”

Daniel said nothing.

“I assumed whatever was inside would make me hate you more.”

“So you kept it.”

“I couldn’t throw away anything she touched.”

Daniel sat opposite him.

“You said there was proof about Vanessa.”

Michael nodded toward the envelope.

“Rachel told me what she put inside.”

Daniel opened it.

His hands trembled.

Inside were printed emails.

Screenshots.

Notes.

And a small flash drive.

Daniel picked up the first email.

From Vanessa.

To Rachel.

The date was six months before Rachel died.

Subject: Daniel’s schedule.

Rachel,

Daniel asked me to make it clear that personal calls during business hours are becoming disruptive.

If something is urgent, contact me and I will determine whether he should be interrupted.

Thank you for understanding.

Daniel felt rage rise through him.

“I never asked her to write this.”

Michael’s expression remained hard.

“I know that now.”

Daniel looked up.

Michael leaned back.

“Rachel showed it to me. I told her to confront you.”

“Why didn’t she?”

“She did.”

Daniel frowned.

“When?”

“Your anniversary dinner.”

Daniel remembered.

That night had become one of their worst fights.

Rachel accused him of treating her like an appointment.

Daniel accused her of refusing to respect his work.

He had thought she was angry because he answered a business call during dinner.

Now he realized there had been more.

“What did I say?”

Michael shook his head.

“I wasn’t there.”

Daniel looked at the emails again.

Another.

Vanessa to Rachel.

Daniel is in Los Angeles and asked not to be contacted.

Another.

Daniel is aware of Ethan’s school issue and will address it when he returns.

Daniel whispered, “I never knew.”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“That’s what Rachel eventually realized.”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

“She started testing Vanessa.”

“How?”

“She would call your office and leave a message about something that never happened.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“To see if you received it.”

Michael picked up one printed email.

“She once told Vanessa that Ethan had broken his arm.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

“He never broke his arm.”

“I know.”

“What happened?”

“Rachel waited two days.”

Daniel understood.

“I never called.”

“No.”

“Because I never got the message.”

Michael nodded.

“That’s when she knew.”

Daniel continued going through the papers.

There were logs.

Dates.

Calls.

Messages.

Rachel had documented everything.

Then Daniel found one page that made him stop.

It was a letter addressed to Vanessa.

Never sent.

Vanessa,

I know what you are doing.

I don’t know why.

Maybe you think Daniel will choose you if I disappear.

But you need to understand something.

If I am wrong, I will apologize.

If I am right, I will make sure Daniel knows everything.

Daniel’s breath caught.

“She knew Vanessa wanted me.”

Michael stared at him.

“Everyone knew Vanessa wanted you.”

Daniel looked away.

“I didn’t.”

“You never saw what was right in front of you.”

That sentence hurt because it was still true.

Daniel held up the flash drive.

“What’s on this?”

Michael shook his head.

“Rachel said phone recordings.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“More?”

“Yes.”

They connected it to Michael’s computer.

Folders appeared.

One labeled VANESSA.

Another labeled DANIEL.

Another labeled ETHAN.

Daniel stared at his own name.

Michael clicked VANESSA.

Audio files.

Dozens.

They opened the last one.

Rachel spoke first.

“I know you’ve been deleting my messages.”

Vanessa replied.

“You sound paranoid.”

“I have proof.”

“No, you don’t.”

“You told Daniel I never called.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa’s voice changed.

Lower.

Harder.

“You should focus on getting better.”

“I’m going to tell him.”

“Go ahead.”

“You’re not afraid?”

Vanessa laughed.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he trusts me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“And by the time you get him to listen, it might be too late.”

Michael stopped the audio.

Neither man spoke.

Officer Collins, standing near the door, said quietly, “We need a copy of all of this.”

Michael nodded.

Then Daniel pointed at the folder labeled DANIEL.

“What’s in there?”

Michael looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel clicked it.

Only one audio file.

He played it.

Rachel’s voice filled the room.

“Daniel, if you ever hear this, then something went very wrong.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

Rachel continued.

“I don’t know if you stopped loving me.”

A pause.

“But I need you to know that I never stopped loving you.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I’m scared, Daniel.”

He broke.

Michael turned away.

Rachel kept speaking.

“The doctors are moving fast. I keep telling myself you’ll come through the door.”

Daniel bowed his head.

Then Rachel said something neither man expected.

“There’s something about Ethan I never told you.”

Daniel looked up.

Michael did too.

May you like

Rachel’s voice shook.

“And if I don’t survive, you need to know the truth about who his biological father really is.”
