Chapter 12: The First Family

The next morning, I drove to Denise's office alone.

She was waiting before I arrived.

She looked like she hadn't slept.

“I got your message,” she said.

“Who was the first family?””

Denise closed the office door.

“I was hoping you wouldn't ask.””

“Why?””

“Because the answer changes how much you should trust the district.””

I sat down.

“Tell me.””

She took a folder from a locked cabinet.

The label had been blacked out.

Inside was another student's record.

A boy named Caleb.

He had used a wheelchair.

He had attended Nova's school three years earlier.

My stomach dropped.

“What happened to him?””

“His parents refused a recommended transfer.””

“Why was one recommended?””

“Behavioral incidents.””

“Were they real?””

Denise looked at me.

“Some were.””

“Some?””

“Caleb had difficult days. But the documentation became increasingly severe.””

“What happened?””

“His parents fought back.””

“And?””

“The school accused them of refusing to cooperate with his educational plan.””

I felt cold.

“They transferred him?””

“No.””

Denise shook her head.

“They withdrew him.””

“Because of the pressure?””

“Yes.””

“What happened afterward?””

“They moved to another district.””

I turned a page.

There was a handwritten note.

Family alleges retaliation.

“Did anyone investigate?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“Nothing was substantiated.””

I looked at Denise.

“Why?””

“Because by the time investigators arrived, the family had already left.””

I closed the folder.

“So this happened before.””

“Yes.””

“And now they're doing it to Nova.””

Denise didn't answer.

She didn't have to.

I stood.

“Why didn't you stop it?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because I was new.””

“That isn't an excuse.””

“No.””

She looked at the floor.

“It was fear.””

“Fear of Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus controls district staffing.””

I stared at her.

“He can fire people.””

“He can recommend termination.””

“And Mrs. Carter?””

“She's been protected for years.””

“By him?””

Denise nodded.

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

“Then find out.””

Denise hesitated.

“There is something you need to see.””

She pulled out another file.

This one was dated two years earlier.

Inside was a report from Caleb's family.

They had claimed that school staff were deliberately documenting false incidents to force a transfer.

At the bottom was a response.

*No evidence found.*

But beneath it was a handwritten note.

Not official.

Just one sentence.

Do not escalate. Vale has approved resolution.

I stared at it.

“Who wrote this?””

Denise shook her head.

“I don't know.””

My phone buzzed.

Sky's mother.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Elena sounded breathless.

“Turn on your email.””

“Why?””

“I found something.””

I opened my laptop.

A new email had arrived.

No sender name.

One attachment.

A video.

I clicked it.

The footage showed a meeting room.

Marcus sat at the table.

Mrs. Carter sat beside him.

And across from them was another woman.

I recognized her.

Denise.

The recording was dated October 10.

Three days before the parent messages.

Five days before the forged transfer form.

Marcus spoke first.

“We need her out before the accommodation review.””

Denise looked uncomfortable.

“You can't remove a student because she's inconvenient.””

Mrs. Carter answered.

“She's becoming a liability.””

Denise shook her head.

“That's not a legal basis.””

Marcus leaned toward her.

“Then we'll find another basis.””

The video continued.

Mrs. Carter placed a folder on the table.

“We have behavior incidents.””

Denise opened it.

“These aren't sufficient.””

“They will be.””

“How?””

Mrs. Carter smiled faintly.

“Give me six weeks.””

I stopped the video.

My hands were shaking.

Six weeks.

The birthday party had been planned six weeks earlier.

I understood.

The cancellations.

The messages.

The notebook.

The storage room.

The forged documents.

It had all been building toward one thing.

Nova's removal.

But then the video continued.

I played the final thirty seconds.

Marcus looked toward the camera.

His expression changed.

He had noticed it.

He stood.

“Who's recording?””

The footage shook.

Someone ran.

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

“Elena didn't send this,” I whispered.

A new email appeared.

*You deserve the truth.*

Then another.

*Check the old classroom tablet.*

I called Denise.

“Where is that tablet?””

She didn't answer.

“Denise?””

Finally, she whispered,

“It was checked out yesterday.””

“By whom?””

“I don't know.””

A notification appeared on my laptop.

Another email.

This one contained a photograph.

The old classroom tablet was sitting on a desk.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

*Ask Nova what she saw in October.*

I stared at the image.

Then I noticed the reflection in the tablet screen.

Someone was standing behind the camera.

A man.

And on his jacket was a district badge.

But it wasn't Marcus Vale.

It was the principal.

And in his hand was a folder marked:

*NOVA — FINAL REMOVAL RECOMMENDATION.*
