Chapter 9

Celeste’s hands shook around the gun.

Elena remained crouched beside Hannah.

Adrian slowly raised both hands.

“You called me for help,” he said.

“I had to make you come.”

“Leon threatened you.”

“He gave me a choice.”

Leon laughed.

“And Mrs. Vale values survival.”

Celeste’s eyes stayed on Adrian.

“If I give him the key, he’ll let me leave.”

“He won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know my father’s people.”

“Your father abandoned him,” Leon said. “I served Victor for twenty-three years. Then he tried to blame everything on me.”

“So this is revenge?” Adrian asked.

“This is retirement.”

The countdown continued on the laptop.

Eighteen minutes remained.

Adrian looked at Celeste.

“If Leon releases those files, he loses his leverage.”

“He already copied what he needs,” she said.

“And you believed him?”

“I don’t have another option.”

Elena stood carefully.

Celeste swung the gun toward her.

“Stay down.”

“You had another option at the party,” Elena said.

“Do not lecture me.”

“You could have told the truth.”

“You think truth protects people?”

“It protected me.”

“Because Adrian chose you.”

“No. Because the camera showed what you did.”

Celeste’s mouth twisted.

“He was supposed to love me.”

“Then why did you marry him?”

Celeste hesitated.

Adrian answered.

“My father sent her.”

“That wasn’t the whole reason,” Celeste said.

“You studied me for months before we met.”

“I was supposed to gain access to your systems.”

“You married me to spy on me.”

“At first.”

The pain in Adrian’s face was quiet but unmistakable.

“And later?”

Celeste looked away.

“Later I wanted the life.”

“The houses?”

“The respect. The invitations. The way people moved when I entered a room.”

“Not me?”

“You were never there.”

Adrian lowered his hands slightly.

“I was working.”

“You were hiding.”

“From what?”

“From your daughter. From Claire’s death. From the possibility that your family was already broken before I arrived.”

Her words struck him.

But he did not deny them.

Celeste’s voice became bitter.

“I learned every detail about you. Your favorite coffee. Your mother’s music. The exact hour you woke after nightmares. I became whatever you needed, and you still looked through me.”

“So you hurt Ruby.”

“She looked through me too.”

“She was a grieving child.”

“She loved a dead woman more than she ever loved me!”

Ruby’s voice came from the doorway.

“Because my mother loved me.”

Everyone turned.

Ruby stood behind Leon.

Marta was beside her.

Elena’s heart stopped.

They were supposed to remain at headquarters.

Marta held the real Rolex.

Leon spun toward them.

Adrian lunged.

He struck Leon’s arm as the gun fired.

The bullet hit the ceiling.

Marcus tackled Leon from the side despite his injured leg.

The three men crashed against the table.

The laptop fell to the floor.

Celeste aimed at Adrian.

Ruby screamed.

Elena grabbed the nearest object—the heavy silver ice bucket from the bar—and swung it into Celeste’s wrist.

The gun flew from her hand.

Celeste slapped Elena across the face.

Elena staggered.

Then Celeste grabbed her injured wrist and twisted.

Pain tore up Elena’s arm.

“You should have left when I warned you!” Celeste shouted.

Elena drove her shoulder into Celeste.

They fell against the sofa.

Celeste reached for the gun.

Elena caught her ankle and pulled her back.

Celeste kicked wildly.

Adrian tried to reach them, but Leon had wrapped an arm around his throat.

Marcus struck Leon with the fallen camera stand.

Leon released Adrian.

Marta moved Ruby behind the wall.

The countdown showed eleven minutes.

Hannah struggled against the ropes.

“Elena, the laptop!”

Elena crawled toward it.

Celeste grabbed her hair.

“You ruined everything!”

“No,” Elena gasped. “You did.”

She turned and shoved Celeste away.

Adrian seized his wife’s arms before she could attack again.

“Enough!”

Celeste struggled.

“Let me go!”

“You will never touch her again.”

Sirens approached outside.

Leon heard them.

He pushed Marcus down and ran toward the laptop.

He entered a command.

The countdown accelerated.

Ten minutes became sixty seconds.

Adrian released Celeste and rushed forward.

Leon kicked the laptop away.

“Stop the upload,” Adrian ordered.

“Give me the watch.”

Marta held it tightly.

Leon pointed his gun toward Ruby.

“Now.”

Marta stepped forward.

Elena blocked her.

“No.”

“He’ll shoot Ruby.”

“He needs the engraving.”

Elena took the watch.

Adrian watched her carefully.

She understood his expression.

Delay him.

“Let Hannah go,” Elena said.

Leon laughed.

“You’re negotiating again?”

“I give you the watch. You release Hannah.”

“Fifty seconds.”

Elena held it over the fireplace.

“If I drop this into the flames, you lose everything.”

Leon’s face changed.

“Fine. Celeste, untie her.”

Celeste stood frozen.

“Do it,” Leon shouted.

She moved behind Hannah and loosened the ropes.

Hannah stumbled free.

“Thirty-five seconds,” Adrian said.

Elena tossed the watch.

Leon reached for it.

But she had thrown it toward Adrian.

He caught it with his uninjured hand.

Leon fired.

Adrian dropped behind the sofa.

Elena rushed at Leon and knocked his arm upward.

Another bullet struck the ceiling.

Marcus tackled him again.

This time Adrian joined him.

Together they forced Leon to the floor.

Celeste ran toward the side door.

Hannah stepped into her path.

“You left me locked in a room for eleven months.”

Celeste stopped.

“You were paid.”

“You threatened my family.”

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Hannah shoved her backward.

Police burst into the library.

They disarmed Leon and handcuffed Celeste.

The laptop countdown reached zero.

The screen flashed.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

Adrian stared at it.

“Can you stop the release?” Elena asked.

He opened the computer.

Files moved across the screen.

Then a second message appeared.

TRANSFER DIVERTED.

Adrian looked toward Ruby.

She held a small tablet.

“What did you do?” he asked.

“Grandma Claire’s old computer taught me.”

Marta stared at her.

“You changed the upload?”

Ruby shook her head.

“Miss Hannah did.”

Everyone turned.

Hannah sank into a chair.

“I worked for Victor before Celeste hired me.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You had access to my daughter.”

“I was sent to watch the house.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

Hannah looked at Ruby.

“But your daughter trusted me. That changed everything.”

She explained that she discovered Celeste drugging Adrian’s coffee so Grant could access his office while he slept.

When Hannah threatened to expose them, Leon imprisoned her in a hidden room on one of Victor’s properties.

She escaped weeks earlier but remained hidden, gathering evidence.

“I entered a failsafe into the stolen drive,” she said. “If anyone attempted a mass release, the files would be transferred to federal servers instead.”

Adrian looked at the laptop.

“So the public received nothing?”

“Nothing private. The FBI received everything.”

Leon cursed from the floor.

Hannah faced him.

“Tomas Ruiz saved copies because he believed the truth should reach the law, not the highest bidder.”

Federal agents entered moments later.

They took custody of Leon, Celeste, and the computers.

As an officer led Celeste outside, she looked at Ruby.

“I tried to be your mother.”

Ruby stood beside Elena.

“No. You tried to replace mine.”

Celeste flinched.

Then she looked at Adrian.

“Was any of it real?”

He took a long time to answer.

“My love was.”

Her face crumpled.

“That is why what you did mattered.”

She was taken away.

The mansion became quiet.

Adrian sat beside Ruby.

“How did you get here?”

Ruby pointed at Marta.

“Grandma Marta said you needed the watch.”

Marta looked embarrassed.

“The police wanted the original evidence. Then we saw the live broadcast.”

Adrian looked at the officers surrounding the room.

“You brought my daughter into a hostage situation.”

“I did not know it was a hostage situation.”

Ruby touched his bandaged shoulder.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

“I’m not angry with you.”

“You look angry.”

“I’m terrified.”

She hugged him.

“I knew Elena would save us.”

Adrian glanced toward Elena.

“So did I.”

Hours later, federal agents confirmed that Hannah’s failsafe had delivered the complete archive.

The evidence connected Victor and Leon to Tomas’s murder.

It also proved that Grant and Celeste had forged Adrian’s signatures.

But it did not erase Adrian’s real mistakes.

Reporters still waited outside.

The board still demanded answers.

Elena stood at the library window as dawn illuminated the garden.

Adrian joined her.

“You should take Ruby somewhere far from this house,” she said.

“I intend to.”

“And what will you do?”

“Tell the truth.”

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

“Your lawyers will hate that.”

“They already do.”

She smiled faintly.

He looked at her bruised cheek and braced wrist.

“I owe you more than an apology.”

“You don’t owe me money.”

“I know.”

“You owe Ruby time.”

“I know that too.”

“And honesty.”

“Yes.”

Elena turned toward him.

“What happens to me?”

“That is your decision.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You are not my employee anymore.”

Her chest tightened.

“You’re firing me?”

“No.”

He took a breath.

“I’m giving you the freedom Celeste tried to take away. Full salary for two years. Medical expenses. Legal representation. Whatever you need to rebuild your life.”

“And Ruby?”

His voice softened.

“She will miss you.”

Elena looked across the room.

Ruby was asleep beside Marta, holding one of Elena’s hands even in her dreams.

“I’m not leaving her.”

Adrian’s eyes met hers.

“Then stay because you choose to.”

Outside, cameras flashed beyond the gates.

The world was waiting to hear from him.

Adrian walked toward the front door.

Elena followed with Ruby and Marta.

Before he stepped outside, his phone rang.

It was the chairman of the board.

Adrian answered on speaker.

“Resign before the press conference,” the chairman said. “If you speak publicly, we will remove you.”

Adrian looked at his daughter.

“What happens to the company if I resign?”

“We protect the share price.”

“And the victims?”

“That is not your responsibility.”

Adrian ended the call.

Ruby looked up at him.

“Are you scared?”

“Yes.”

“Me too.”

He took her hand.

May you like

“Then we’ll be scared together.”

He opened the door.
