Chapter 7

Adrian kept his eyes on Ruby.
She was crying silently inside the SUV.
Grant stood beside the open door.
Victor’s gun remained pressed against Marta.
“You already took forty-eight million dollars,” Adrian said.
Victor smiled.
“That was operating money.”
“For what?”
“The future.”
“You kidnapped a child.”
“My granddaughter is insurance.”
“She is six years old.”
“And worth more to you than Vale Systems.”
Victor’s gaze sharpened.
“That is your weakness.”
“No,” Adrian said. “It is the only thing that makes me stronger than you.”
Victor laughed.
“You sound like your mother.”
“She discovered what you were.”
“She misunderstood ambition.”
“You stole from your own company.”
“I built that company.”
“You nearly destroyed it.”
“I was creating a private intelligence network before governments understood the value of data.”
Elena looked at the watch in her hand.
“What did my father hide?”
Victor turned toward her.
“A list of accounts. Names. Payments. Every person who helped me build what Adrian inherited.”
“And you killed him for it.”
“I offered Tomas money.”
“He refused.”
“He made a foolish choice.”
Marta cried out.
Elena moved forward.
Victor pushed the gun harder against her back.
“One more step, and your mother dies.”
Elena stopped.
Grant checked the parking lot.
“We need to leave.”
Victor ignored him.
“Give me the watch.”
Elena raised it.
“Release my mother and Ruby first.”
Victor smiled.
“You are in no position to negotiate.”
“Then shoot me.”
“Elena,” Adrian warned.
She did not look at him.
“If I die, you never get the key.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“You have it?”
“My father left it to me.”
“Show me.”
“Let my mother walk to Adrian.”
Victor considered it.
Then he cut the rope around Marta’s ankles.
“Walk.”
Marta stumbled toward Adrian.
Elena wanted to run to her, but Victor kept the gun raised.
When Marta reached Adrian, he pulled her behind him.
“Now Ruby,” Elena said.
“No.”
“That was the agreement.”
“I agreed to release your mother.”
“You need me alive.”
“I need the key. Those are not the same thing.”
Grant grabbed Ruby and pulled her from the SUV.
She kicked and struggled.
He held her tightly.
Adrian’s control finally cracked.
“Take your hands off her!”
Grant pressed a pistol to Ruby’s side.
“Do what Dad says.”
Adrian stared at his brother.
“You called him Dad.”
Grant laughed bitterly.
“He never stopped being our father.”
“You knew he was alive.”
“I helped him disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because you took everything.”
Adrian looked stunned.
“What did I take?”
“The company. The house. Mom’s trust. Even after she died, everyone looked at you as though you were the only son who mattered.”
“I never asked for that.”
“You never had to ask.”
Grant’s eyes filled with years of resentment.
“You entered a room, and people stood up. I entered after you, and they asked me where you were.”
“So you helped him steal from the company?”
“I helped him reclaim it.”
“You framed me.”
“I wanted the board to remove you.”
“And Celeste?”
Grant hesitated.
Adrian saw it.
“You promised her my life.”
“She wanted the money.”
“She wanted you.”
Grant looked away.
Victor grew impatient.
“Enough.”
He pointed at Elena.
“The watch.”
Elena tossed it onto the pavement between them.
Victor ordered Grant to retrieve it.
Grant forced Ruby forward with him.
When he bent down, Ruby bit his hand.
He shouted.
The gun moved away from her body.
Ruby dropped to the ground.
Adrian ran.
A shot exploded through the fog.
Elena screamed.
Adrian pulled Ruby behind a parked car.
Grant fired again.
Police lights suddenly illuminated the overlook.
Officers rushed from every direction.
Victor grabbed Elena and dragged her against his chest.
His gun pressed beneath her jaw.
Grant fled toward the SUV.
A police officer tackled him before he reached it.
Marta hid behind a concrete barrier.
Adrian held Ruby on the ground.
The bullet had grazed his shoulder.
Blood spread across his shirt, but he remained conscious.
Victor backed toward the edge of the overlook with Elena.
“Tell them to lower their weapons,” he said.
Elena could feel his hand shaking.
“You’re finished.”
“I disappeared once.”
“You won’t do it again.”
“I still have you.”
“No. You have a witness.”
His grip tightened.
“You think Adrian will risk your life?”
Elena looked toward him.
Adrian stood slowly, one arm around Ruby.
Officers ordered him to remain down.
He ignored them.
“Let her go,” he told Victor.
“Give me the brass key.”
“You will never get it.”
Victor pushed the gun harder against Elena.
“She is your employee.”
“She is under my protection.”
“Are you willing to lose everything for her too?”
Adrian looked at Elena.
“Yes.”
Victor’s face twisted.
“That is why you were never fit to lead.”
“And that is why you lost both your sons.”
Grant, handcuffed on the ground, lifted his head.
Victor glanced at him.
The distraction lasted less than a second.
Elena drove her heel down onto Victor’s foot.
Then she threw her head backward.
It struck his nose.
Victor cursed and loosened his grip.
Elena twisted away.
A police sniper fired.
The bullet struck Victor’s shoulder.
His gun fell.
Officers rushed him.
Within seconds, Victor lay facedown in handcuffs.
Elena ran toward her mother.
Marta wrapped her arms around her.
“You came for me.”
“Always.”
Adrian carried Ruby toward them.
His wounded shoulder had been bandaged by a paramedic.
Ruby reached for Elena.
Elena held her with one arm while keeping the other around Marta.
For a moment, the four of them stood beneath the flashing lights.
Safe.
Then Grant began laughing.
Adrian turned toward him.
“What is funny?”
“You think you won.”
Victor shouted from beside the police vehicle.
“Be quiet!”
Grant ignored him.
“The watch is fake.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
She said nothing.
Grant’s laughter stopped.
Victor stared at the watch on the pavement.
Understanding crossed his face.
“The real one is somewhere safe,” Elena said.
Victor lunged toward her, but the officers restrained him.
“You have no idea what is on it!”
“That is why you were willing to destroy two families,” she answered. “So I’m sure the FBI will be interested.”
Victor was placed inside a police vehicle.
Grant remained on his knees.
Adrian approached him.
“Where is Celeste?”
Grant looked up.
For the first time, fear replaced his resentment.
“She was supposed to meet us here.”
“She didn’t.”
“No.”
“When did you last see her?”
“At the bail office.”
“What happened?”
“She said she had copied the files from the drive.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
“She has another copy?”
Grant nodded.
“She said she finally understood what Dad was building.”
“Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.”
Adrian crouched in front of him.
“You helped kidnap my daughter. This is your last opportunity to do one decent thing.”
Grant looked at Ruby.
His expression flickered with shame.
“Celeste has a private jet waiting at Van Nuys.”
Police immediately contacted the airport.
The jet was still there.
Celeste was not.
At 3:00 a.m., Adrian, Elena, Ruby, and Marta arrived at the hospital.
Doctors treated Adrian’s shoulder and confirmed that Elena’s wrist was badly sprained but not broken.
Ruby would not allow anyone to close the curtain between their beds.
Marta sat beside her.
Elena finally had time to examine the real Rolex.
The engraved numbers formed two sequences.
One was a bank routing code.
The other resembled map coordinates.
Adrian entered them into a secure tablet.
The location appeared on the screen.
Vale Systems headquarters.
More precisely, the coordinates pointed to the wall behind Adrian’s office.
“My mother designed that building,” he said.
Elena held up the brass key.
“The second door.”
At sunrise, federal agents met them at the company.
They entered Adrian’s office.
A framed portrait of Claire hung behind his desk.
Elena inserted the key into a nearly invisible opening in the frame.
A panel clicked.
Behind it stood a narrow steel door.
Adrian entered the numbers from the watch.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room filled with storage drives, ledgers, photographs, and recorded statements.
Claire had built an entire archive.
On the center table rested a sealed envelope addressed to Adrian.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
My son,
If you found this room, Victor has returned, and Tomas’s daughter has brought you the key.
I am sorry for leaving you with a burden you never deserved.
Do not protect the Vale name.
Protect the truth.
Adrian lowered the letter.
An agent connected one of the drives to an isolated computer.
Thousands of records appeared.
Bank transfers.
Bribes.
Surveillance reports.
Names of politicians, executives, and criminals.
Then a video file opened.
Claire appeared on the screen.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Victor believes information belongs to whoever is strong enough to steal it. If he succeeds, no family, company, or government will be safe.”
The recording continued.
Elena watched Adrian struggle to remain composed.
Then Claire said something that made everyone freeze.
“My son Grant is already helping his father. Celeste Hart is their courier. If she has entered Adrian’s life, the plan is active.”
The video had been recorded eight years ago.
Adrian had met Celeste only four years earlier.
Their marriage had never been an accident.
From the beginning, she had been sent to him.
An agent’s phone rang.
He answered and listened.
Then he looked at Adrian.
“We located Celeste.”
“Where?”
“At Ruby’s school.”
Adrian’s face went pale.
“The campus is closed.”
“She wasn’t trying to find Ruby.”
“Then why was she there?”
The agent turned the computer toward them.

A security image showed Celeste entering the school’s underground server room.
“She just uploaded something to every major news organization in the country.”
