Chapter 2

The chapel went so silent that Ethan could hear rain striking the stained-glass windows.

Victoria's wrist trembled inside his grip.

"Let go of me."

Ethan didn't.

His eyes stayed on the checks.

There were nine of them.

Different dates.

Different amounts.

All signed by Victoria.

The oldest had been written almost twelve years earlier.

Two weeks before Olivia disappeared.

Ethan looked up.

"What is this?"

Victoria's face changed.

Only slightly.

But Ethan knew her too well.

He had watched Victoria negotiate contracts worth millions without blinking. He had seen her smile through hostile board meetings, funerals, lawsuits, and scandals.

This wasn't anger anymore.

It was fear.

"Ethan, this child clearly doesn't understand what she's carrying."

Lucy stepped around him.

"I understand exactly what they are."

Victoria stared at her.

"You need to stop talking."

"No."

Lucy's voice cracked, but she didn't back away.

"My mom said you'd say that."

A murmur moved through the pews.

Ethan's younger sister, Claire, rose from the second row.

"Ethan?"

He ignored her.

His whole world had narrowed to Victoria.

"You told me Olivia died."

Victoria pulled against his grip.

"I told you what I was told."

"No."

His voice sharpened.

"You told me you personally confirmed it."

Victoria's lips parted.

Ethan remembered the night clearly.

Nine years earlier.

He had been sitting alone in his apartment when Victoria arrived with tears in her eyes.

She told him Olivia had died overseas after a sudden illness.

She said there had been no service he could attend.

She said Olivia's family wanted privacy.

Ethan had believed her because Victoria had been Olivia's friend.

Or at least he had thought she was.

"You said you spoke to her aunt," Ethan said.

"I did."

"What was her name?"

Victoria froze.

It lasted one second.

Maybe two.

But it was enough.

Ethan released her wrist as if touching her burned him.

"What was her name, Victoria?"

"This is not the time."

Lucy laughed bitterly.

"My mom said you never met any of her family."

Victoria spun toward her.

"Your mother was a liar."

Lucy went pale.

Ethan stepped between them again.

"Don't."

Victoria stared at him.

"You're defending a stranger?"

"She's eleven."

"She's accusing me of something insane in front of everyone we know!"

Ethan lifted the checks.

"Then explain these."

"I helped Olivia."

"By paying her tens of thousands of dollars?"

Victoria said nothing.

Ethan looked down.

Five thousand.

Eight thousand.

Ten thousand.

Another ten.

Then monthly checks for years.

The final one had been written only three months earlier.

His stomach twisted.

"You knew she was alive."

Victoria's shoulders lowered.

Something cold replaced the panic in her face.

"I knew."

Gasps spread through the chapel.

Claire covered her mouth.

Victoria's father stood abruptly from the front pew.

"Victoria."

She didn't even look at him.

Ethan felt as if the floor had moved beneath him.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"For nine years?"

"Yes."

Lucy shook her head.

"Twelve."

Ethan turned.

"What?"

Lucy pulled another paper from the envelope.

"Mom said it started before I was born."

Ethan took it.

A handwritten agreement.

No lawyer's letterhead.

No official seals.

Just signatures.

Olivia Bennett.

Victoria Hale.

The words blurred at first.

Then Ethan forced himself to read.

Olivia agreed to leave Boston.

Olivia agreed not to contact Ethan Pierce.

Olivia agreed not to reveal the pregnancy.

In exchange, Victoria would provide financial support.

Ethan stopped breathing.

He read the third paragraph twice.

Then a third time.

"You knew about the baby."

Victoria's eyes closed.

"Ethan—"

"You knew Olivia was pregnant."

"Yes."

"And you knew she told me the baby wasn't mine."

Victoria didn't answer.

Lucy stepped closer.

"Mom lied because Victoria made her."

Ethan stared at the girl.

Really stared at her for the first time.

Brown eyes.

A small scar above her right eyebrow.

A nervous habit of pressing her thumb against the side of her index finger.

His father used to do that.

Ethan did it too.

His chest tightened.

Lucy saw him looking.

"My mom said I look like you when I'm angry."

Victoria snapped.

"Enough!"

She lunged for the envelope.

Ethan blocked her again.

But this time Lucy screamed.

"She threatened my grandmother!"

Everyone stopped.

Victoria's face drained.

Lucy was crying now.

"Mom said she wouldn't leave. She said she loved you. Then Victoria found out Grandma had medical debt and threatened to make sure she lost her house."

Victoria's mother rose.

"Victoria, what is she talking about?"

"Sit down, Mother."

"No."

It was the first time Victoria looked shaken by someone other than Ethan.

Her mother came into the aisle.

"Answer her."

Victoria looked around the chapel.

Nearly a hundred faces.

Phones were coming out.

Whispers had become open conversation.

The wedding photographer stood frozen beside the altar.

Victoria's perfect ceremony was collapsing.

And Ethan suddenly understood something.

Victoria wasn't scared because he might leave.

She was scared because everyone was watching.

He removed his wedding ring from his pocket.

The one he had planned to slide onto his finger after the vows.

He placed it on the altar.

"We're done."

Victoria stared at the ring.

"You don't mean that."

"I do."

"You haven't even heard my side."

"I've heard twelve years of your side."

Her face hardened.

"I built your life with you."

"You built it on a lie."

"I was there when your company almost failed."

"You lied."

"I stood beside you when your father died."

"You lied."

"I gave you everything Olivia never could."

"Because you made sure she couldn't."

Victoria stepped closer.

Her voice dropped.

"That woman chose the money."

Lucy flinched.

Ethan saw it.

And something inside him snapped.

"Don't speak about her mother like that."

Victoria laughed once.

"You don't even know if she's your daughter."

Lucy's face fell.

Ethan turned toward her.

He wanted to say something.

Anything.

But before he could, Lucy's old phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her entire expression changed.

"Hospital."

She answered.

"Hello?"

A pause.

Then all the color vanished from her face.

"No."

Ethan moved closer.

Lucy gripped the phone with both hands.

"No, please. I'm coming back. Tell her I'm coming."

She listened.

Her knees buckled.

Ethan caught her before she hit the floor.

The phone slipped from her fingers.

A nurse's voice could still be heard through the speaker.

"Lucy? Lucy, are you there?"

Ethan grabbed it.

"This is Ethan Pierce."

There was silence on the other end.

Then the nurse said carefully,

"Mr. Pierce, Ms. Bennett's condition has deteriorated. She's asking for her daughter."

Ethan looked down at Lucy.

"How much time?"

"We can't say."

Lucy grabbed his jacket.

"Please."

One word.

That was all.

Ethan looked toward the altar.

Toward Victoria.

Toward the woman he had almost married.

Then back at the child who might be his daughter.

"Where is she?"

"St. Catherine's."

Ethan lifted Lucy to her feet.

"We're going."

Victoria stepped in front of him.

"If you walk out that door with her, don't come back."

Ethan stopped.

He looked at Victoria for a long moment.

Then he took Lucy's hand.

May you like

"That was already the plan."

And he walked out of his own wedding.
