Chapter 1

She had waited years to become his wife, but one furious little girl destroyed her perfect plan before the vows were finished.

"DAD! DON'T MARRY HER!"

The chapel doors hit the walls, and a rain-soaked girl stood in the opening.

Ethan Pierce was at the altar beside Victoria Hale — white roses, candle smoke, nearly a hundred guests. He believed the hardest years of his life had finally led somewhere certain.

Then the doors cracked open.

The girl was maybe eleven. Long brown hair soaked flat against her cheeks, rain darkening the shoulders of her pale blue sweatshirt. She clutched a worn tan envelope to her chest like it was the only dry thing she had left.

Her soaked sneakers squeaked down the red runner. She looked past the strangers, past the flowers, until her eyes locked on the groom.

"DAD! DON'T MARRY HER!"

Ethan had never seen her before in his life.

"Who are you?"

"I'm Lucy. Olivia's daughter."

The name went through him like cold water. Olivia belonged to a photograph he'd stopped keeping beside his bed — and a grief he'd learned not to discuss.

The bride stepped into the aisle so fast her veil brushed his sleeve, bouquet raised like a shield.

"Olivia died nine years ago!"

The girl pointed one trembling hand straight at the bride. Not confused. Not scared. Furious — that an adult had repeated a lie in public.

"No! You paid Mom to disappear!"

She opened the envelope in front of a hundred people. One faded photograph. A stack of green-edged checks.

"Mom kept every check. She's dying tonight."

Ethan took the photograph first. Himself, twelve years younger, beside Olivia — pregnant. The afternoon he remembered. The argument he remembered. The week she told him the baby wasn't his.

Then his thumb moved to the first check.

Payee: Olivia Bennett.

And the signature at the bottom — the same long slant he had watched sign contracts, cards, and their marriage license application.

Victoria Hale.

Every check. Every single one.

The bouquet hit the floor. Her hand shot toward the papers —

"GIVE ME THOSE!"

And Ethan caught his bride's wrist mid-air, stepped in front of the child, and shielded her with his body.
