Chapter 9

Daniel read Margaret’s letter alone.

Not because Claire advised it.

Not because police required it.

Because he needed one moment in which his mother belonged only to him.

He sat inside the Moon Room at the lake house while officers searched every floor.

The late afternoon sun reflected off the water.

The room still smelled faintly of cedar.

Nothing had changed since Margaret’s last summer there.

Except everything.

The letter trembled in Daniel’s hands.

My dear son,

If you are reading this, I was not able to finish what I started.

I am sorry.

Not because I am leaving you a problem.

Because I should have trusted you enough to tell you sooner.

Martin has been stealing from Mercer Dynamics for years.

I discovered the first transfers by accident.

When I confronted him privately, he convinced me I was mistaken.

Later, when I became ill, he used my illness against me.

Daniel stopped.

He closed his eyes.

Then continued.

I believe he interfered with my medication to make my judgment appear unreliable.

I cannot prove he caused my illness.

Do not let grief turn suspicion into certainty.

Prove what can be proved.

That sentence sounded exactly like Margaret.

Precise even while dying.

Daniel continued.

Vanessa was sent into your life by Martin.

That truth will hurt you.

But people are not always only the worst thing they have done.

She began as his instrument.

I believe she eventually loved you.

Whether that excuses her lies is not for me to decide.

Protect your child first.

Always.

Daniel lowered the letter.

His vision blurred.

Protect your child first.

His mother had written those words before Emma was born.

Before she knew whether Vanessa carried a boy or girl.

Before Daniel became a father.

She had known what mattered.

He kept reading.

The voting trust exists because I feared Martin would eventually come for the company through you.

Not because you are weak.

Because you trust deeply.

That is your strength.

It is also the door dishonest people will try to enter.

Do not become a man who trusts no one.

Become a man who knows trust must be earned again when broken.

Daniel stopped once more.

For the first time in twenty-four hours, he cried without hiding it.

Not from rage.

Not from fear.

From missing her.

When he finished the letter, he folded it carefully and pressed it against his chest.

A knock sounded.

Claire entered.

“Graham is talking.”

Daniel wiped his face.

“What does he want?”

“Immunity.”

“He won’t get full immunity.”

“No.”

“What is he offering?”

Claire sat across from him.

“Documents proving Martin created North Vale Consulting.”

Daniel nodded.

“We suspected that.”

“He has bank records showing Martin received most of the money.”

“Good.”

“He also has emails with Vanessa.”

Daniel looked down.

“And?”

“Some support her claim that she wanted out.”

Daniel’s expression did not change.

Claire continued.

“Six months ago, Vanessa told Martin she would not keep using Emma.”

Daniel’s eyes lifted.

“He responded with threats.”

“What kind?”

“That he would expose Vanessa’s original arrangement with him and help Daniel take full custody.”

Daniel almost laughed bitterly.

“She was afraid I’d learn the truth.”

“Yes.”

“So she protected herself by hurting Emma.”

Claire did not soften it.

“Yes.”

Daniel appreciated that.

“What else?”

“Martin told Graham he needed enough fabricated evidence to remove you temporarily during the acquisition.”

“Why during the acquisition?”

“Because the seller’s company owns patents Martin wanted transferred into another holding group.”

Daniel frowned.

“For what?”

“To sell overseas.”

“That could violate export controls.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel stared.

“So the eighty-million-dollar acquisition wasn’t the goal.”

“No.”

“It was the doorway.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stood and walked toward the window.

“Where is Martin now?”

“Still missing.”

“What about Vanessa?”

“Her attorney wants to negotiate.”

“No.”

Claire waited.

Daniel turned.

“No deals involving Emma.”

“That is not entirely your decision.”

“I know.”

“But prosecutors may consider cooperation.”

Daniel hated that too.

“She should cooperate because it’s right.”

“People rarely get legal credit for morality alone.”

Daniel looked away.

A detective entered.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Yes?”

“We located Martin’s second vehicle.”

“Where?”

“Abandoned near the county airfield.”

Daniel’s body stiffened.

“Plane?”

“No private departures under his name.”

“He wouldn’t use his name.”

“We’re checking aliases.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Emma.

Video call.

His face softened immediately.

He answered.

Emma appeared with Bunny.

Now repaired.

Thomas sat behind her wearing a bandage.

“Daddy, Bunny has a scar.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“So does Grandpa.”

Thomas frowned.

“I look distinguished.”

Emma giggled.

That sound almost brought Daniel to tears again.

“When are you coming back?”

“Soon.”

“Did you find Grandma’s secret?”

“Yes.”

“What was it?”

Daniel looked at the letter.

“Something she wanted me to remember.”

“What?”

“That I should always protect you first.”

Emma nodded seriously.

“That’s a good secret.”

“The best.”

Thomas leaned toward the screen.

“Police outside say there’s a reporter at the end of the street.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

Already.

The story was becoming public.

“Keep Emma away from windows.”

“Done.”

“And do not leave.”

“I’m not an idiot.”

Daniel smiled despite himself.

“I know.”

Emma asked, “Can I sleep in your room tonight?”

“Yes.”

“At Grandpa’s?”

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

He ended the call.

Claire’s phone immediately buzzed.

She checked it.

Her face changed.

“What?”

“News broke.”

She turned the screen.

MERCER DYNAMICS CEO AT CENTER OF FAMILY AND CORPORATE FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

Daniel read the headline.

Another alert.

Then another.

The board meeting.

Vanessa’s arrest.

The forged medical documents.

Someone was leaking everything.

Eleanor called.

Daniel answered.

“Tell me.”

“Stock is down eleven percent in after-hours trading.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Tomorrow will be worse.”

“Yes.”

“Are you asking me to resign?”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

Eleanor continued.

“The board voted.”

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“On what?”

“To reaffirm you as CEO pending the investigation.”

Daniel sat down.

“Why?”

“Because Martin disappeared.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Very reassuring.”

“And because auditors found unauthorized accounting entries connected to him.”

“How much?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“Keep digging.”

“We will.”

“Eleanor.”

“Yes?”

“If investigators prove Martin stole from the company, I want every employee pension and compensation fund reviewed first.”

“Why?”

“Because people like Martin steal downward before anyone notices upward.”

Silence.

Then Eleanor said, “Your mother used to say something similar.”

Daniel stared at the letter.

“I know.”

After the call, Daniel asked Claire, “What happens to the voting trust?”

“Thomas can activate it.”

“Do we?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because until Martin is caught, we don’t know what documents he still has or which directors he compromised.”

Daniel nodded.

“Activate it.”

By 7:30 p.m., Thomas signed the certification from his hospital room.

The miniature key fit into a secure archival box retrieved from the bank.

Inside was a notarized trust amendment and an old hardware security token.

Margaret had designed the process so no one person could activate it alone.

Thomas.

The physical key.

The bank.

The trust.

Layers.

Protection.

At 8:05, Emma Mercer’s voting trust became active.

She was six years old.

She had no idea she now controlled enough protected votes to stop any takeover of the company her grandmother founded.

Daniel intended to keep it that way.

Childhood should not come with board meetings.

At 8:17, Graham Pike signed a cooperation agreement.

At 8:42, police raided Martin Vale’s office.

At 9:03, they found a hidden accounting server.

At 9:28, they found evidence of transfers totaling more than nineteen million dollars.

At 10:11, they found emails between Martin and Dr. Pamela Sloan.

The same doctor connected to Margaret’s altered medication.

And Emma’s fabricated counseling records.

At 10:37, Dr. Sloan was arrested.

Daniel received the call while driving back to Thomas’s house.

“What did she say?”

Ramirez answered.

“Nothing yet.”

“Did you find evidence she changed my mother’s medication?”

“We found communications discussing dosage.”

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“Does that prove it?”

“Not yet.”

Daniel remembered his mother’s letter.

Prove what can be proved.

He forced himself to breathe.

“Call me when it does.”

At 11:02, Daniel arrived at Thomas’s house.

Police vehicles lined the street.

Reporters stood behind barricades.

Daniel entered through the garage.

Emma ran toward him.

“Daddy!”

He lifted her.

She hugged his neck.

“You came back.”

The words shattered him.

“Always.”

He carried her upstairs.

She fell asleep beside him within fifteen minutes.

Daniel remained awake.

Watching.

Listening to every sound.

At 1:13 a.m., a motion sensor triggered outside.

Daniel sat up immediately.

Police checked.

A raccoon.

At 1:47, Emma rolled over and grabbed his sleeve.

At 2:20, Daniel finally closed his eyes.

At 2:26, the house alarm exploded.

Daniel jumped up.

Emma screamed.

He grabbed her.

Downstairs, officers shouted.

Glass shattered.

Then three sharp knocks came from the bedroom door.

“Mr. Mercer! Police!”

Daniel opened it.

Officer Ramirez stood there.

“What happened?”

“Someone tried the back entrance.”

“Martin?”

“We don’t know.”

Emma clung to Daniel.

Then a police radio crackled.

“Suspect vehicle leaving eastbound.”

Ramirez turned.

Daniel followed him downstairs despite orders to remain upstairs.

Outside, officers rushed toward cruisers.

A black SUV disappeared at the end of the road.

Daniel stared.

Then he saw something attached to the front gate.

A white envelope.

Ramirez approached carefully.

Bomb squad protocol was considered.

Then the envelope was examined.

No device.

Only paper.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel’s wedding day.

He and Vanessa smiling outside a church.

Martin standing in the background.

A red circle had been drawn around Emma’s pregnant mother.

On the back, four words were written.

SHE STILL HAS SOMETHING.

Daniel stared.

“What does he mean?”

Ramirez looked at him.

“Vanessa.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

The county jail.

Daniel answered.

A corrections officer spoke urgently.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Yes?”

“Your wife is requesting to speak with you.”

“Why?”

“She says it’s an emergency.”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“What kind of emergency?”

The officer hesitated.

“She says Martin Vale is coming for her.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“He can’t get into jail.”

“That’s not what she means.”

“What does she mean?”

May you like

The officer’s voice lowered.

“She says there is a deputy on Martin’s payroll.”
